Comic Review for week of January 16 2019
-
The above scene does not happen in the book, but the stuff that DOES happen is pretty fun. If a bloodbath is your definition of fun.
-
I’m really digging the fact that there are aliens in the Dredd-verse. It’s weird to wrap my head around, but I dig it.
-
End of the series? This final story wraps up a whole bunch of interesting things that were just really starting to come to light.
-
Why yes that is a Transformer that’s in the shape of the TOS Enterprise.
-
Three different stories, all of them good and worthy of a whole book.
-
Pretty sure I should have read the first 10 issues of this series to get even a clue as to what’s going on here.
-
At no point did this scene happen in the comic. The B-Story in this book was better then the A-Story.
-
These True Believer books are usually a bit of a slog to get though, the writing and art from so long ago are at times rough, but these four Conan ones have really exposed me to some cool stories. In this one there’s a mage with golden bones that’s holding a monster at bay, all while marrying a kidnapped princess. I loved every minute of it, but was happy when I was done.
-
A group of black African warriors as led by a raven haired white girl. Ok.

Comic Review for week of January 2 2019
-
I’m liking this series, though having The Joker be the bad guy yet again is a well traveled road.
-
Why yes, it’s yet another #1 issue from the geniuses at Marvel Comics!
-
I’m financially invested in this story now, but I’m not mentally invested. I chose to read this issue first
-
I’m thinking my original assumption was correct again, this is just a retelling of the Fantastic 1234 story. There’s a great yet stupid scene of Doctor Doom blasting The Kingpin and the Kingpin somehow coming away from the fight as the winner. Visually it’s pretty cool, but logically, not so much.
-
This was not available at my LCS. Who’s at fault? Marvel? Diamond? My LCS? Me?
-
I’m really digging these one shots, they really make me hungry for more stories from this time period.
-
Of the three (3!) books that feature Han Solo, this is a close first or second. The movie adaptation is garbage compared to this and the mainline Star Wars series.
-
I’ve never been a Conan fan.
-
I’m still not a Conan fan.

Scalzi sure can right some good words, this continues his streak of great stories that have interesting twists that kept me hooked for the entire read.
Unfortunate that I read this so long after it came out. From what I understand, it is the progenitor of many of the scifi / cyberpunk tropes that I love so dearly. Seeing them in such an early stage though, it just feels…wrong.

Maya Rudolph as a blonde is really the only truly ground-breaking thing going on here. I see why Sesame Street was so upset about the movie trying to tie it’s perversion to the childrens show, as these puppets are 100% directly ripped from Sesame Street in all but behavior only. There’s lots of drug use, murdering, gratuitous sex scenes and one extended scene of a puppet octopus sexually milking a puppet cow, getting puppet milk all over the room. Don’t get me wrong, this is a hilarious movie and the aforementioned cow milking scene is really the highlight of the first act, but it was the wanton desire to tie itself to a kids show that really rustled my jimmies.
Watchable and I laughed at a few of the jokes.

Why wasn’t the original show this is from this good? Why aren’t any of the other DC movies this great?
Who knows! But Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is a masterpiece of DC Animation. I hope they do more, if only for songs like this:

I could not figure out why they named this film “Peppermint”. Did I miss someone’s name or maybe their favorite candy? This was a normal revenge violence flick, ala The Punisher, Payback, Taken, Death Wish, etc. It was ok. Not really all that interesting and I have a few complaints about people shoving guns into their pants right after shooting them, but my biggest complaint is that the main bad guy looked like one of the actors from super troopers:
Hard to take him seriously when I was expecting him to chuck a whole thing of maple syrup at any moment.
Comic Review for week of December 12 2018
-
A speedster with a team of scientists are fighting a creature of pure sound! It was a fun, if quick, read.
-
I know nothing of this character’s backstory, but after reading this issue now I want to.
-
I’m going to save these until I get the middle of the run, I have the first 10 issues, then missed 10, and now I’m lost?
-
I like the art much better this month, but the story still has some weird overtones.
-

-
Shadowman at peace with himself means Shadowman is fighting everyone else.
-
There’s a great article in this comic about who asked for Darth Maul to be brought back into the fold. This story is pretty good too, but I was most interested in WHO it was that made him come back.
-
Doctor Aphra continues her adventures with a murderous protocol droid. Things continue to not go well for her.
-
There’s two Han Solo comics coming out right now, the movie adaptation, which isn’t all that great, and this, which is great.
-
I ran out of steam before I was able to read this one, but I DID read…

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010
Tags:A Nightmare on Elm Street, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
A few big name actresses here, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, and Connie Britton, all of whom are big enough stars that I expected they would survive the movie, but I guess I should have known better, normally the survival rates for a Nightmare flick is 1 or 2, maybe 4 if you’re dream warriors. I’m a big fan of what Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Human Target) did with the Freddy role, which is comparable to Robert Englund’s first outing. The special effects on his face were downright creepy, unlike the previous film where it was a rubber mask with no gore or horror to it at all.
This was a good Nightmare film, but I’m happy the franchise is inactive, it’s a difficult well to go back to again and again.

Tags:Jack Black, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
What’s up with Jack Black and all these kid friendly films lately? (checking google) Oh, his kids are 10 and 12, so now he’s doing stuff that’s going to appeal to them too. That’s a thing I guess, it’s not like all his previous work was so raunchy that kids could never watch it. On to the film though:
It was fun. No one’s going to write a thousand word essay on how great it was, but it was a fun movie to watch, Jack Black was charming as always and Cate Blanchett was distressingly pretty and stole nearly every scene she was in. I see why she was chosen for the role, but it really felt like she was slumming it here.
Wakefield
Tags:Bryan Cranston, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
This is a one man show for Bryan Cranston, starring Jennifer Gardner’s sideboob. Much like other movies that are primarily one person (Buried is the first to come to mind), the entire movie hinges on the abilities of the primary star, which in this case are fantastically and readily apparent. The entire concept is one that most people are familiar with and have likely played around with in their heads: What if we just gave up on our lives and went somewhere else? Only in this case, he didn’t go anywhere, he just lived in the detached garage watching his family move on.
The ultimate resolution left me feeling weird, but honestly I feel like what would happen in the 30 seconds after the final scene would be perfect content for another full movie and I’m happy to leave it where they left it.
It’s great fodder for discussion at least, so if you’ve seen Wakefield, how do you feel about his decision to detach, and how do you feel about that final scene?

The Incredible Hulk 4k
Tags:Comic Books, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies, The Incredible Hulk
A perfect example of a terrible, horrible, no good, lack luster, incompetently and badly done 4k transfer. All the colors are muted, all the dark parts of the movie are inexplicably darker and more difficult to see, and I get the sense that there is no HDR on this disk. The audio track is still great, the surround sound features during the soda bottling fight are awesome, but all those great audio effects are for nothing if you can’t see anything at all on the screen.
Skip this 4k version, I’m sure they’re going to go back to this well again to make better choices.
Comic Review for week of Dember 05 2018

What if everyone just stopped moving? What if you were the only one that could start them again? This is a great start to an interesting story.
-
This will be my last one of these. The cover is great, but the interior art is very rough and the story is just as bad.
-
Now there’s a supervillain after her?
-
The Punisher saves the Marvel Universe, as told by The Incredible Hulk
-
This is my first Lion Forge book and its much better than I was expecting. It’s the last issue of a long story though, so I’ll need to pick up the other 13 issues to really have an opinion.
-
Campy goodness that continues as you would expect.
-
There’s a few panels here with Worf’s eyes where he looks like he’s about to kill his fellow Starfleet officers. He doesn’t actually do it though, I’m sure you’re happy to hear.
-
Still the best.
-
I missed the first issue of this somehow, so I grabbed both #1 and #2, and found a great story that fills in a TON of backstory for The Force Awakens.
-
Qui-Gon Jinn was always a “find the balance” kinda guy and that’s what this story is about. Spoiler: He finds the balance.

Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th 2018
The Thanksgiving holiday threw my schedule for a loop and I wasn’t able to get to my LCS in a timely manner, but it was a good pickup when I did make my way there.
-
Meh. Backup story was more interesting than the main story.
-
Fantastic continuation of an already fantastic concept.
-
They’re going to make The Punisher the guy that saves the universe? ok then.
-
No universe saving going on here, just a lot of old fashion shootin and killin.
-
This series has finally hit it’s stride and continues to deliver on it’s awesome premise.
-
These adaptations are horrible compared to…
-
We don’t deserve Star Wars stories this good.
-
The Joker is back! (again!) Babs gets shots in the back! (almost!)
-
A collection of short stories, of which only a couple rise to being notable, most noticeably the Supergirl story which comes out of nowhere with how beautiful it is. It also feels like the first few pages of a much longer story that I would love to read.
-
It’s weird how Faith changes shape from panel to panel, but they ARE in a dreamworld, so maybe that’s why?
-
This is one boring as hell storyline.
-
I enjoy the DC Insiders much more than these previews books, pretty much everything they’re highlighting here has already been mentioned elsewhere.
-
Final issue I think? The cover I got was amazing and I loved the holographic nature of it. The story was a bit goofy and guest starred a couple people that are actively doing other things in their own books, so it was somewhat weird to see them doing completely out of character things in Q&W. Lookin at you XO.
-
Vader’s castle takes it’s final shape and boy howdy it took some sacrifices to get it there.
-
I don’t understand what’s going on with this story and why X-O seems like such a pushover for the entire storyline.

The series about family and cool cars doing cool things is now a multi-billion dollar franchise with super cars doing super things. This isn’t the series I fell in love with, but it still entertains, you just have to turn off all the logic centers in your brain.

The Consuming Fire The Interdependency
Tags:Book Of The Year 2018, Book Reviews, Books, John Scalzi
The Interdependency?humanity’s interstellar empire?is on the verge of collapse. The extra-dimensional conduit that makes travel between the stars possible is disappearing, leaving entire systems and human civilizations stranded.
Emperox Grayland II of the Interdependency is ready to take desperate measures to help ensure the survival of billions. But arrayed before her are those who believe the collapse of the Flow is a myth?or at the very least an opportunity to an ascension to power.
While Grayland prepares for disaster, others are prepare for a civil war. A war that will take place in the halls of power, the markets of business and the altars of worship as much as it will between spaceships and battlefields.
The Emperox and her allies are smart and resourceful, as are her enemies. Nothing about this will be easy… and all of humanity will be caught in its consuming fire.
The Interdependency Series
1. The Collapsing Empire
2. The Consuming Fire
I keep thinking to myself “Ah, this is it, finally John Scalzi has written something that I’m not 100% in love with!” but then about halfway through the book, I find myself deeply interested in what’s going on and who’s doing what. Every book in this series (all two of them!) has had some serious twists and turns that have kept me hooked onto every chapter.
The worst I can say about the series so far is that everyone is snarky and cynical, but that pretty much sums up Scalzi’s work for the last decade. Dependably snarky. I’m excited to see where he goes next in the story.

Comic Review for week of November 14 2018

I’ve heard this is one of the best selling Valiant comics in years, but it was still underwhelming for me. Hopefully the story makes a little more sense after a few more issues.
-
Wasn’t on my pull list, but my comic shop pulled it for me anyways, thank god. This was a fun but brief journey back to the Doctor Horrible Universe.
-
What a terrible conclusion to a terrible storyline.
-
A stunning tale of fantastic four members all coming together to do fantastic things against an unbeatable enemy. I’m happy that Mr Fantastic has a name for particular types of beings in the Marvel Multiverse, but I’m concerned that with the end of this issue comes the end of their multiverse / outer space adventures. I’m not really looking forward to them rejoining Earth and am much happier reading about them doing fantastic things elsewhere.
-
That cover is gorgeous isn’t it? The story inside is pretty damn fantastic and they perfectly get the dialogue, which has been a struggle for past Firefly books. I look forward to the next issue!
-
Bleh.
-
I like the new art direction, I like the skulls, I like the jewels, I hate the racist overtones of the bad guys.
-
Space Horror done right.
-
Boring and unneeded. Skip it and just go see the movie.
-
Dark and muddled art but I like where the story is going. I’m not too familiar with the friendship between Ninja-K and The Eternal Warrior, but I get the impression they’re pretty darn close.
-
I honestly felt like this was an episode of the Star Trek Animated series. Fantastic retro art direction for both the Trek crew and the Robots in disguise.
-
This issue left me feeling like there’s no possible way for them to top what they’ve done. Yet I’ve felt that way for the last few Vader issues, so since I was wrong before, I’ll be happy to be wrong in the future.

I had the first 7 hardcovers before I gave up on comic books and when i came back to the industry as a fan, they called out to me to complete them, nay they taunted me with their uncompleted status.
So I bought the other four volumes and found that Robert Kirkman was still killing it with Invincible, but lost his damn mind and wanted to cancel it. Did he get bored? Did he write himself into a corner? Did he not have time to pen this series while counting all his massive stacks of cash? Who knows, but I’m happy I had over 144 issues of the series to read with all the supplemental content in the back of these books. They’re among the best superhero stories you can possibly read and I can’t recommend them enough.
Because of how high I was feeling after finishing that last giant hardcover book, I rushed across my room (four feet!) to order some trades of “Invincible Universe“, a side story that ran for 12 issues in it’s own series. It was not of the same quality of the main series, neither in story nor in art. This isn’t to say it was terrible, just not as amazing as the mainline books.
I have Science Dog and Guarding the Globe on backorder, so we’ll see how those are when they get in. I think there’s a couple other series (The Brit? Tech Jacket?) in the invincible comic universe, but I’m not too excited about them just yet.

Holding for run completion
-
Another entertaining look inside what makes DC comics happen and what’s coming up soon.
-
Bad art and a boring story, I regret picking this up. The cover is cool though, but I get the impression from the interior story that this person is not Hal Jordon?
-
Still kicking ass and taking names and looking for the boss guy to kill.
-
Hey I remember this story from when it was Fantastic Four 1234. Great art and direction though.
-
Heroes on the run! Continuing one of the best ongoing stories from Marvel.
-
An interesting look into how Solo got his name and what “solo” essentially means in the Star Wars universe, which is a small and minor change that changes literally everything you knew about the character.
-
Fantastic comic that I strongly suggest to anyone that has the mind to read something fun and amazing. It’s not actually the first “Trump’s Titans” book, something I didn’t know until this issue got to me, but it says that all the issues are number one because Super Trump only puts his name on things that are #1. It’s seriously one of the best mocucomics I’ve read yet.
Back Issues Fun:
Science Dog Written by Kirkman (Walking Dead, Invincible) at the peak of when he was doing comics and not being a media empire runner and boy howdy it shows. If you liked Invincible at it’s greatest, you’ll like Science Dog. It’s a short story though, so even though it has great art and a fantastic story, there’s only enough to get you interested and not enough to really satiate your hunger for more quality Kirkman product.
