Comic Review for week of January 16 2019

  • Comic Review for week of January 16, 2019
The above scene does not happen in the book, but the stuff that DOES happen is pretty fun.  If a bloodbath is your definition of fun.

I’m really digging the fact that there are aliens in the Dredd-verse.  It’s weird to wrap my head around, but I dig it.

Pretty sure I should have read the first 10 issues of this series to get even a clue as to what’s going on here.

  • Comic Review for week of January 16, 2019
At no point did this scene happen in the comic.  The B-Story in this book was better then the A-Story.

  • Comic Review for week of January 16, 2019
These True Believer books are usually a bit of a slog to get though, the writing and art from so long ago are at times rough, but these four Conan ones have really exposed me to some cool stories.  In this one there’s a mage with golden bones that’s holding a monster at bay, all while marrying a kidnapped princess.  I loved every minute of it, but was happy when I was done.

Scalzi sure can right some good words, this continues his streak of great stories that have interesting twists that kept me hooked for the entire read.

Unfortunate that I read this so long after it came out.  From what I understand, it is the progenitor of many of the scifi / cyberpunk tropes that I love so dearly.  Seeing them in such an early stage though, it just feels…wrong.

Marko Kloos is only the third author that I’ll grab anything they write, just as long as I see their name on the book.  The Frontlines series is fantastic and Kloos continues to bring the noise.

I believe this was the first of the Discovery books, and while it’s a great first entry, it’s not what I was really looking for in a Disco book.

    2018 Games of the Year

A IRL game making it to this list is weird as fuck, but here we are.  It was a fun game that I’ve only found the opportunity to pull out exactly 3 times.

Dishonorable mention as one of the worst games of the year, no clue how it ended up on this list.  Who rating this higher than 1 star?

While it wasn’t a terrible experience, I would hesitate to call this a “game”.

    Special Mentions:
    Rebel Galaxy
    QUBE2

Did a game not make the list that you thought should have?

    The Happytime Murders

    71pwxb5zWIL. SL1500 722x1024 The Happytime Murders

The Happytime Murders is a filthy comedy set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human (Melissa McCarthy) and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show. Also starring Elizabeth Banks, Maya Rudolph, and Joel McHale, this raunchy comedy is being hailed by critics as “hilarious, wickedly original and crazily quirky” (Neil Pond, Parade).

Maya Rudolph as a blonde is really the only truly ground-breaking thing going on here. I see why Sesame Street was so upset about the movie trying to tie it’s perversion to the childrens show, as these puppets are 100% directly ripped from Sesame Street in all but behavior only. There’s lots of drug use, murdering, gratuitous sex scenes and one extended scene of a puppet octopus sexually milking a puppet cow, getting puppet milk all over the room. Don’t get me wrong, this is a hilarious movie and the aforementioned cow milking scene is really the highlight of the first act, but it was the wanton desire to tie itself to a kids show that really rustled my jimmies.

Watchable and I laughed at a few of the jokes.

    Supergirl getting some sun

the book this from is pretty awesome.

well the book is actually just ok, but this particular story is awesome.

No, I’m not going to tell you what book this is from.

You need to start thinking for yourself now.  You’re a grown adult.

    Peppermint

    718MDX91hEL. SL1500 796x1024 Peppermint

Young mother Riley North (Garner) awakens from a coma after her husband and daughter are killed in a brutal attack on the family. When the system frustratingly shields the murderers from justice, Riley sets out to transform herself from citizen to urban guerilla. Channeling her frustration into personal motivation, she spends years in hiding honing her mind, body and spirit to become an unstoppable force – eluding the underworld, the LAPD and the FBI – as she methodically delivers her personal brand of justice. From the director of Taken, this film is being hailed by critics as “a total adrenaline rush from start to finish!” (Dave Morales, Fox TV Houston).

I could not figure out why they named this film “Peppermint”. Did I miss someone’s name or maybe their favorite candy? This was a normal revenge violence flick, ala The Punisher, Payback, Taken, Death Wish, etc.  It was ok. Not really all that interesting and I have a few complaints about people shoving guns into their pants right after shooting them, but my biggest complaint is that the main bad guy looked like one of the actors from super troopers:

    super troopers Peppermint

Hard to take him seriously when I was expecting him to chuck a whole thing of maple syrup at any moment.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010

    71qNQM43vSL. SL1500 809x1024 A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

Freddy’s back in the update of Wes Craven’s classic tales of the hideously disfigured dream-stalker and his prey.

A few big name actresses here, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, and Connie Britton, all of whom are big enough stars that I expected they would survive the movie, but I guess I should have known better, normally the survival rates for a Nightmare flick is 1 or 2, maybe 4 if you’re dream warriors. I’m a big fan of what Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Human Target) did with the Freddy role, which is comparable to Robert Englund’s first outing. The special effects on his face were downright creepy, unlike the previous film where it was a rubber mask with no gore or horror to it at all.

This was a good Nightmare film, but I’m happy the franchise is inactive, it’s a difficult well to go back to again and again.

  • The House with a Clock in Its Walls

81UPGRqmwlL. SL1500 722x1024 The House with a Clock in Its Walls

In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town’s sleepy façade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches. Based on the beloved children’s classic book.

What’s up with Jack Black and all these kid friendly films lately? (checking google) Oh, his kids are 10 and 12, so now he’s doing stuff that’s going to appeal to them too. That’s a thing I guess, it’s not like all his previous work was so raunchy that kids could never watch it. On to the film though:

It was fun. No one’s going to write a thousand word essay on how great it was, but it was a fun movie to watch, Jack Black was charming as always and Cate Blanchett was distressingly pretty and stole nearly every scene she was in. I see why she was chosen for the role, but it really felt like she was slumming it here.

    Wakefield

    91MhpwfEfiL. SL1500 724x1024 Wakefield

Successful suburbanite commuter Howard Wakefield (Cranston) has taken a perverse detour from family life: He vanishes without a trace. Hidden in the attic of his garage, surviving by scavenging at night, he secretly observes the lives of his wife (Jennifer Garner) and children. But soon, he realizes that he has not left his family … he has left himself. Also starring Jason O’ Mara and Beverly D’Angelo, Wakefield is “one to definitely seek out”, (The Hollywood News).

This is a one man show for Bryan Cranston, starring Jennifer Gardner’s sideboob. Much like other movies that are primarily one person (Buried is the first to come to mind), the entire movie hinges on the abilities of the primary star, which in this case are fantastically and readily apparent. The entire concept is one that most people are familiar with and have likely played around with in their heads: What if we just gave up on our lives and went somewhere else? Only in this case, he didn’t go anywhere, he just lived in the detached garage watching his family move on.

The ultimate resolution left me feeling weird, but honestly I feel like what would happen in the 30 seconds after the final scene would be perfect content for another full movie and I’m happy to leave it where they left it.

It’s great fodder for discussion at least, so if you’ve seen Wakefield, how do you feel about his decision to detach, and how do you feel about that final scene?

    2018 my[confined]space year in review

For the first time ever, an official End of Year, Year in Review!  Three weeks early too, so I wonder if any of these stats will change in any meaningful way in the next 20 days!

In 2018, there were over 21,889 posts (down from 2017’s 23,001), which received 3,320 comments (down from 2017’s 4,873).  Traffic was sorta stable at 2,163,753 page views for 2018, slightly down from 2017’s 2,321,227 page views.

    We had several theme days!

Obviously it’s my blog so I’m the most talkative person here, but I do miss the days when people would talk amongst themselves.  Is there a barrier to commenting on the site that I’m not seeing and can address?

    The Incredible Hulk 4k

    81cyINrfcSL. SL1500 805x1024 The Incredible Hulk 4k

Academy Award nominee Edward Norton stars as scientist Bruce Banner, a man who has been living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote to the unbridled force of rage within him: the Hulk. But when the military masterminds who dream of exploiting his powers force him back to civilization, he finds himself coming face to face with his most formidable foe: the Abomination -– a nightmarish beast of pure aggression whose powers match the Hulk’s own!

A perfect example of a terrible, horrible, no good, lack luster, incompetently and badly done 4k transfer. All the colors are muted, all the dark parts of the movie are inexplicably darker and more difficult to see, and I get the sense that there is no HDR on this disk. The audio track is still great, the surround sound features during the soda bottling fight are awesome, but all those great audio effects are for nothing if you can’t see anything at all on the screen.

Skip this 4k version, I’m sure they’re going to go back to this well again to make better choices.

A collection of short stories, of which only a couple rise to being notable, most noticeably the Supergirl story which comes out of nowhere with how beautiful it is.  It also feels like the first few pages of a much longer story that I would love to read.

Final issue I think?  The cover I got was amazing and I loved the holographic nature of it.  The story was a bit goofy and guest starred a couple people that are actively doing other things in their own books, so it was somewhat weird to see them doing completely out of character things in Q&W. Lookin at you XO.

I don’t understand what’s going on with this story and why X-O seems like such a pushover for the entire storyline.

    Back Issues!

Starlight – What if a man from Earth was teleported to an alien planet where he overthrew a dictator and became a hero to the entire alien planet?  Would anyone on Earth believe him if he was teleported back without much proof?  What would happen if those aliens came back 50 years later asking for help again?

Avatar: The Last Airbender Trade Paperbacks – Diamond solicited about 10 different Avatar trades that were pretty cheap, so I ordered them all.  Four shipments later and they’re still sending me one or two books at a time instead of just fulfilling the entire order at once. They’re literally the worst part of my experiences with comic book collecting and I honestly hope their monopoly gets broken up sooner rather than later.

91M7RqJUHjL 674x1024 The Consuming Fire (The Interdependency)

The Interdependency?humanity’s interstellar empire?is on the verge of collapse. The extra-dimensional conduit that makes travel between the stars possible is disappearing, leaving entire systems and human civilizations stranded.

Emperox Grayland II of the Interdependency is ready to take desperate measures to help ensure the survival of billions. But arrayed before her are those who believe the collapse of the Flow is a myth?or at the very least an opportunity to an ascension to power.

While Grayland prepares for disaster, others are prepare for a civil war. A war that will take place in the halls of power, the markets of business and the altars of worship as much as it will between spaceships and battlefields.

The Emperox and her allies are smart and resourceful, as are her enemies. Nothing about this will be easy… and all of humanity will be caught in its consuming fire.

    The Interdependency Series
    1. The Collapsing Empire
    2. The Consuming Fire

I keep thinking to myself “Ah, this is it, finally John Scalzi has written something that I’m not 100% in love with!” but then about halfway through the book, I find myself deeply interested in what’s going on and who’s doing what. Every book in this series (all two of them!) has had some serious twists and turns that have kept me hooked onto every chapter.

The worst I can say about the series so far is that everyone is snarky and cynical, but that pretty much sums up Scalzi’s work for the last decade. Dependably snarky. I’m excited to see where he goes next in the story.

A stunning tale of fantastic four members all coming together to do fantastic things against an unbeatable enemy.  I’m happy that Mr Fantastic has a name for particular types of beings in the Marvel Multiverse, but I’m concerned that with the end of this issue comes the end of their multiverse / outer space adventures.  I’m not really looking forward to them rejoining Earth and am much happier reading about them doing fantastic things elsewhere.

That cover is gorgeous isn’t it?  The story inside is pretty damn fantastic and they perfectly get the dialogue, which has been a struggle for past Firefly books.  I look forward to the next issue!

    12 Invincible: The Ultimate Collection

This massive hardcover collects the first 13 issues of Robert Kirkman’s Eisner-Nominated super-hero, along with all the extras from the first three trade paperback volumes and even more on top of that! Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Volume 1 is a can’t-miss for anyone who’s wanted to start reading Invincible, but needed an easier way to start from the beginning.

I had the first 7 hardcovers before I gave up on comic books and when i came back to the industry as a fan, they called out to me to complete them, nay they taunted me with their uncompleted status.

So I bought the other four volumes and found that Robert Kirkman was still killing it with Invincible, but lost his damn mind and wanted to cancel it.  Did he get bored? Did he write himself into a corner?  Did he not have time to pen this series while counting all his massive stacks of cash?  Who knows, but I’m happy I had over 144 issues of the series to read with all the supplemental content in the back of these books.  They’re among the best superhero stories you can possibly read and I can’t recommend them enough.

Because of how high I was feeling after finishing that last giant hardcover book, I rushed across my room (four feet!) to order some trades of “Invincible Universe“, a side story that ran for 12 issues in it’s own series.  It was not of the same quality of the main series, neither in story nor in art.  This isn’t to say it was terrible, just not as amazing as the mainline books.

I have Science Dog and Guarding the Globe on backorder, so we’ll see how those are when they get in.  I think there’s a couple other series (The Brit?  Tech Jacket?) in the invincible comic universe, but I’m not too excited about them just yet.

    • Comic Review for week of November 7, 2018

Fantastic comic that I strongly suggest to anyone that has the mind to read something fun and amazing.  It’s not actually the first “Trump’s Titans” book, something I didn’t know until this issue got to me, but it says that all the issues are number one because Super Trump only puts his name on things that are #1.  It’s seriously one of the best mocucomics I’ve read yet.

    Back Issues Fun:
Science Dog Written by Kirkman (Walking Dead, Invincible) at the peak of when he was doing comics and not being a media empire runner and boy howdy it shows.  If you liked Invincible at it’s greatest, you’ll like Science Dog.  It’s a short story though, so even though it has great art and a fantastic story, there’s only enough to get you interested and not enough to really satiate your hunger for more quality Kirkman product.

Venom gives Sony an edge over Disney in its fight to keep SpiderMan according to industry experts

Sony’s first solo foray into the “Spider-Man” universe after striking a deal with Marvel is a hit with audiences despite a critical pounding.

“Venom” was an ok film that had nearly nothing to do with the original comic book character and I have major doubts about Sony’s Marvel Movies, but maybe they’ll be able to pull something off despite not having a solid start?

The Ultimate Collector’s Edition of Gone with the Wind is beautifully restored for Blu-ray, showing off how good a movie can look even many decades after its release. The second Blu-ray disc has a wide variety of bonus material. New for the Ultimate Collector’s Edition are two 2009 documentaries: 1939: Hollywood’s Greatest Year is narrated by Kenneth Branagh and summarizes the famous films that debuted that year, including Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington; “Gone with the Wind: The Legend Lives On” is a 33-minute study of the legacy of the movie, with interviews of film critics, Ted Turner, former Georgia Senator Max Cleeland, and surviving cast member Anne Rutherford (Careen O’Hara). Also new for the UCE is Moviola: The Scarlett O’Hara War, a 1980 television movie that dramatizes the casting of Gone with the Wind, starring Tony Curtis, William H. Macy, Sharon Gless, Morgan Brittany, and others. Much of the rest was on the 2004 four-disc edition, including the commentary track by Rudy Behlmer and documentaries on Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, other actors, and the filming and restoration of the movie. The third disc is a double-sided standard DVD of the documentary MGM: The Lion Roars, and the UCE comes in an oversize box with a beautiful photo book of stills and theatrical posters, reproductions of studio correspondence and a publicity booklet, a soundtrack CD sampler, and art cards. –David Horiuchi

Gave this to my wife for her birthday, then we watched the main feature! It’s a fantastic film that has some obvious issues that haven’t aged very well, but at the end of the day it’s still a joy to watch, even after nearly 90 years.
