New Star Trek Book: “The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy”

The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy by Adam Nimoy has been added to the Star Trek Book Club!
Even before Star Trek I’d see him popping up in bit roles on some of my favorite TV shows like Get Smart, Sea Hunt, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And then one night he brought home Polaroids of himself in makeup and wardrobe for a pilot he was working on. It was December 1964 and nobody had heard of Star Trek. Still, the eight-year-old me had watched enough Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian to understand exactly what I was looking at.
Spock’s popularity happened quickly, and soon the fan magazines were writing about dad’s personal life, characterizing us as a “close family.” But the awkwardness that defined our early relationship blossomed into conflict, sometimes smoldering, sometimes open and intense. There were occasional flashes of warmth between the arguments and hurt feelings—even something akin to love—especially when we were celebrating my father’s many successes. The rest of the time, things between us were often strained.
My resentment towards my father kept building through the years. I wasn’t blameless, I know that now, but my bitterness blinded me to any thought of my own contribution to the problem.
I wanted things to be different for my children. I wanted to be the father I never had, so I coached Maddy’s soccer, drove Jonah to music lessons, helped them with their homework—all the things dads are supposed to do. All the things I wanted to do. So what if my Dad and I had been estranged for years? I was living one day at a time.
And then I got his letter.
That marked a turning point in our lives, a moment that cleared the way for a new relationship between us.
The book is currently scheduled to be published on June 4, 2024

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Dog of War TPB
Tags:Book Reviews, Books, Comic Books, Comic Covers, Star Trek
I read these as they came out individually, but the TPB collection just hit my local library and it’s a great read from cover to cover. The dog is a bit of a weird thing for Trek to have in it’s books, it’s apparent that the Trek writers / fans are more cat people than anything not a Targ, and other than a weird alien dog with a horn on his head, I think there was only one or two other dogs in the television shows, Archer’s beagle being the best boy of them all, followed up by Janeway’s golden retriever that had puppies right before she disappeared in the Badlands and was off on her own adventures in the Delta Quadrant.
The dog content is great, but the borg stuff with Sisko seems out of character for me, it feels much more like something that Bashir would do, which is to be dumb enough and so full of hubris to think that you’d survive putting on some random Borg technology you found, then being lucky enough to actually survive the experience.
The series has some pretty awesome covers, with 4 or 5 variants for each issue.

Out today: “Star Trek: Sons of Star Trek #1“, by Morgan Hampton.
From the pen of acclaimed Cyborg writer Morgan Hampton comes a new four-part miniseries spinning out of IDW’s Eisner-nominated Star Trek series and fan favorite Star Trek: Defiant series! In the aftermath of Kahless’ harrowing Day of Blood, Jake Sisko struggles to find his place in the universe now that his family has been reunited and his father, Benjamin Sisko, has once again saved the galaxy. Meanwhile, Alexander Rozhenko is recovering mentally and emotionally from his time as one of Kahless’ devout followers. Though his father, Worf, was able to break him away from the Red Path cult, Alexander is haunted by his actions during the bloody coup and is unsure of his ability to atone for the devastation he caused. Jake and Alexander find their stories intertwined as they’re thrust into an alternate universe where they followed their father’s footsteps into Starfleet stardom. As officers aboard the U.S.S. Avery, Jake and Alexander encounter alternate versions of other children of Starfleet legends who show them they all may have a bit more in common than it would seem.

Blood will flow in this first-ever Federation crossover event which pulls from the ongoing Star Trek space saga and the Defiant spin off graphic novel series!
As emperor of the Klingon Empire, Kahless II has consolidated power, raided ancient tombs and secret bunkers, taken the power of gods for himself, stolen the Bajoran Orb of Destruction, and has begun a slaughter across the stars.
But this genocide of gods was just the beginning. For with the power he has stolen, Kahless is about to declare war on all those who do not follow the Red Path. To prevent genocide unlike any since the ancient days of Qo’noS, the crew of icons led by the emissary known as Benjamin Sisko (Star Trek ongoing series) and the renegades who follow a desperate and violent Worf (Star Trek: Defiant) must unite for a common cause. Only they can hope to stop the DAY OF BLOOD.

Star Trek: Resurgence
Tags:Game Reviews, Gaming, Star Trek
The first real Trek release since 2022’s “Star Trek Prodigy Supernova”, this one is a walking simulator with some quick time events thrown in every now and then with a story that feels like it’s fit in during the TNG / VOY era of gaming. I think it’s specifically set after Nemesis with Captain Riker and Ambassador Spock making appearances. There’s a large number of deep cut references for TNG fans to enjoy, including a deuridium addicted first officer and a gorgeous Centaur class ship for the story to take place on.
The story is well done, but some of the graphics ranged from gorgeous to terrifyingly bad, particularly during transporter scenes in which eyeballs would materialize first, so for a few moments you’d have floating eyeballs in the matter stream. Oddly, the best scene graphically speaking is a close up of a character’s face when they’re making some hard decisions a the end of the game, and it’s the eyes that really popped out, this time in a beautiful way. The gameplay sadly got old really quick, with minimal interactions in the world around you and a completely linear environment for each scene with no opportunities to really explore the spaces. That being said, I enjoyed my time with the game, but I’m going to let it rest a while before I play it again to achievement hunt, I’m told that to get a 100% I’ll need to do at least 2 more play throughs 🙁

“Sacrifice of Angels”

This is a great novelization of the stories in those episodes but has nothing at all to do with the first book in this series. Now that I’ve finished this one and started the third book I see their going back and forth between the original story with the TNG crew doing stuff and the DS9 stories that we all know and love from the TV series and I have to say that I dislike this completely and wouldn’t suggest reading these in the order that they suggest reading them in. I’d say you should read 2&4 first, then 1&3, but what do I know.

I think the lessons taught by StarWars are especially relevant right now. The Empire called the people of Alderaan terrorists to justify what they did. They’re more than just stories.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Dominion War: Book 1: Behind Enemy Lines

After reading a series of short stories in “Tales of the Dominion War” I realized I had a whole series of books that dealt with what various crews were up to during the entire horrifying ordeal, so I started in with book one. It’s a great story of what the TNG Enterprise crew was putting up with and how they were reacting to such death and destruction, and just when it was getting good the book just stopped. I’m not even sure if that was supposed to be the end of the actual story, but considering how bad the formatting and pagination was for the entire publication (as officially released for my Kindle!) I wouldn’t be shocked if there were parts missing. I hoped it was just that one book, but it looks like the next one in the series is also badly mangled, with no spacing between paragraphs or scene changes and chapter markers that don’t make much sense.
The story itself is pretty good, I just wonder whatever happened to Data and if the infiltration team ever made it back safely. The next book doesn’t pick up the story, it seems to be a novelization of stuff that was happening in DS9 for the final season.

This month’s ebook deals have landed with 27 books on sale for $0.99 each, books that have never been on sale are in bold:
No official announcement from S&S about this month’s book sale yet, but I was getting antsy about the situation and found these books for $0.99 each on several of the normal book stores I link to every month. No idea how long they’re going to stay at this price, so if you want to get one, better do it sooner than later! Previews of this week’s comics: “Star Trek: Defiant #12” and “Star Trek: Picard’s Academy #6”
Tags:New Book Preview
Space Tags:New Book Preview
IDW has graciously given me permission to post some preview images of their upcoming comics and while this one is a couple days late, I’m working out my process and I think I have it nailed down. These actually came out yesterday, but if this were done earlier this week like I had planned, here’s what you’d see:
Original Star Trek: Defiant writer-artist duo Christopher Cantwell and Ángel Unzueta delve into the sci-fi horror genre in arc three of the fan-favorite series! Eager to move past the unofficial bounty-hunting mission assigned to them by Starfleet, disgraced former ambassador and Starfleet legend, Worf, and his rogue crew make way for Starbase 99, a run-down remnant of the Dominion War, to complete their fugitive drop-off. The clandestine assignment has left them disillusioned with Starfleet and with one another, but a surprise awaits the Defiant crew, threatening to tear the crew apart even further-literally.
Star Trek: Picard’s Academy #6
It’s do-or-die for Picard and cadets in the finale of Picard’s Academy! Romulans storm the ship while Starfleet remains out of reach and potentially unaware of the threat headed their way, but the cadets have finally come to an agreement, electing Jean-Luc to the captain’s chair. They’re finally willing to follow Picard’s lead, and Picard is finally willing to acknowledge their feedback-now acting as a proper crew. But is it too late? Will Picard fail his crewmates once again and, worse yet, see the start of an interstellar war? So much for graduating early!
