A novel based upon the explosive Star Trek TV series!
The U.S.S. Discovery‘s specialty is using its spore-based hub drive to jump great distances faster than any warp-faring vessel in Starfleet. To do this, Lieutenant Paul Stamets navigates the ship through the recently revealed mycelial network, a subspace domain Discovery can briefly transit but in which it cannot remain. After responding to a startling distress call originating from within the network, the Discovery crew find themselves trapped in an inescapable realm where they will surely perish unless their missing mycelial fuel is found or restored. Is the seemingly human man found alone and alive inside the network the Starfleet officer he claims to be, or an impostor created by alien intruders who hope to extract themselves from the mycelial plane at the expense of all lives aboard Discovery?
Amazon Kindle App continues to be garbage, all apostrophes in this novel were character encoded with “& 51343” instead of the actual punctuation. That’s the worst thing that I have to say about this novel though, because Dave Galanter really knocked it out of the park here, he’s written the best Discovery story that I’ve read yet. He’s captured everyone’s voices perfect and I had to laugh out loud several times when a series of conversations all ended exactly how I would want them to on the show.
“Lock In” for 3
A blazingly inventive near-future thriller from the best-selling, Hugo Award-winning John Scalzi.
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent – and nearly five million souls in the United States alone – the disease causes “Lock In”: Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.
A quarter of a century later, in a world shaped by what’s now known as “Haden’s syndrome,” rookie FBI agent Chris Shane is paired with veteran agent Leslie Vann. The two of them are assigned what appears to be a Haden-related murder at the Watergate Hotel, with a suspect who is an “integrator” – someone who can let the locked in borrow their bodies for a time. If the Integrator was carrying a Haden client, then naming the suspect for the murder becomes that much more complicated.
But “complicated” doesn’t begin to describe it. As Shane and Vann began to unravel the threads of the murder, it becomes clear that the real mystery – and the real crime – is bigger than anyone could have imagined. The world of the locked in is changing, and with the change comes opportunities that the ambitious will seize at any cost. The investigation that began as a murder case takes Shane and Vann from the halls of corporate power to the virtual spaces of the locked in, and to the very heart of an emerging, surprising new human culture. It’s nothing you could have expected.

At first it seemed impossible – a radio signal that came not from Earth but from far beyond the nearest stars. But then the signal was translated, and what had been impossible became terrifying.
For the signal contains the information to build a Machine that can travel to the stars. A Machine that can take a human to meet those that sent the message.
They are eager to meet us: they have been watching and waiting for a long time.
And now they will judge.

Based on the same comic book series that the 2013 movie was based on, this television series has all the same basic story points, but goes in completely different directions, with the divergence starting at the end of episode one. It’s a good story, with fantastic special effects, and an excellent but nonsensical world for the characters to thrive in.
I do have some questions about that world they find them in and was constantly frustrated by the focus on the internal politics of the passengers instead of fighting the freeze outside of the train. I can only hope that season two will bring more PVE instead of PVP story elements.
Dune
Before The Matrix, before Star Wars, before Ender’s Game and Neuromancer, there was Dune: winner of the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written.
Melange, or ‘spice’, is the most valuable – and rarest – element in the universe; a drug that does everything from increasing a person’s life-span to making intersteller travel possible. And it can only be found on a single planet: the inhospitable desert world Arrakis.
Whoever controls Arrakis controls the spice. And whoever controls the spice controls the universe.
When the Emperor transfers stewardship of Arrakis from the noble House Harkonnen to House Atreides, the Harkonnens fight back, murdering Duke Leto Atreides. Paul, his son, and Lady Jessica, his concubine, flee into the desert. On the point of death, they are rescued by a band for Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, who control Arrakis’ second great resource: the giant worms that burrow beneath the burning desert sands.
In order to avenge his father and retake Arrakis from the Harkonnens, Paul must earn the trust of the Fremen and lead a tiny army against the innumerable forces aligned against them.
And his journey will change the universe.
I went in thinking this was going to be a rough book to really get into, but other than keeping track of who was who with all their silly names, this was an enjoyable story that kinda just ends on a cliff hanger, much like the movie did. Now I need to read the 100 page appendix that comes after the main story, which from my brief skimming looks to be a story of the ecology of Arrakis and how exactly a desert planet with no greenery is capable of sustaining human life for so long.

I absolutely loved the covers for this series, picked them up for 20-30 cents each. Storywise it’s a good series when it’s able to, but there’s a series of interruptions from batfamily wide cross overs that I don’t necessarily care about, so those were straight up wasted paper for me.

The Walking Dead The Telltale Series – A New Frontier
Tags:Game Reviews, Gaming, The Walking Dead
I put this off for a long while, only slightly getting interested after it was all done and released by another develper that wasn’t technically TellTale Games, who went bankrupt half way through the game and left unfinished. This is a shame, because this is the strongest of any of TWD games, and I’d honestly say it gives the TV series a run for it’s money in pure entertainment value. Clem is a fully fleshed out woman by this point and the new characters that she interacts with are both believable and understandable, even when they’re doing completely shitty things to each other. Unlike the first two seasons, I never once thought they were being dumb for stupidity’s sake.
The game engine was really showing it’s age though, with frame drops, audio issues, stuttering, long loading times, and border glitches. I’m not sure if the server connections were due to TellTale not being a functional company anymore, but in previous games you could compare your choices to what the rest of the players did, but that wasn’t an option this time through, just a message suggesting that if you were connected you’d see something like that at the end of the episodes.
I also suggest downloading all the episodes at once before you start any game play and do not pay attention to the backgrounds that x-box uses, spoilers lurk there and I saw them right before I started episode two, so for the entire next two episodes I was wondering when a certain character was going to die.

Fantastic series based on a pornographic comic book series from the 90’s, I was really surprised that they made the show and have really mentioned how much it’s linked back to that comic series. While the comic book was all about that T&A, this is a much deeper story that really gets moving the moment it starts and only lets up off the throttle a few times. I’m not happy with the last episode of this season, but I’m going to assume that they’ll have a second season to make it up to us.
Check it out when you get the chance!

It’s been so long since I’ve done one of these, I didn’t even remember how to do them! There’s plenty of books that were supposed to come out that still havent’ made their ways to your local shop, then other books that have only been released to select shops, then books that have been announced as released but no one seems to have a copy of them anywhere.
The big book this week that I’m 100% sure is out is the 100 page Catwoman 80th Anniversary book with it’s wallet breaking variant covers. I didn’t get the cover I wanted (that 90’s one is gorgeous) but I did enjoy the stories inside. Have you been able to pick up book lately?
Devolution
“I wish we could elevate the national dialogue on public safety to a level of tone and focus that Max Brooks has demonstrated for all of us.”-Tom Ridge, former governor of Pennsylvania and first secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Set in the wilds of Washington State, Greenloop was once a model eco-community-until nature’s wrath made it a tragic object lesson in civilization’s fragility.
Offering a glorious back-to-nature experience with all the comforts of high-speed Internet, solar smart houses, and the assurance of being mere hours from Seattle by highway, Greenloop was indeed a paradise-until Mount Rainier erupted, leaving its residents truly cut off from the world, and utterly unprepared for the consequences. With no weapons and their food supplies dwindling, Greenloop’s residents slowly realized that they were in a fight for survival. And as the ash swirled and finally settled, they found themselves facing a specter none of them could have predicted-or even thought possible. . . .
In these pages, Max Brooks brings to light the journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own investigations into the massacre that followed and the legendary beasts behind it. If what Kate saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us-and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity.
Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it-and like none you’ve ever read before.

Old Man’s War
A perfect for gift for an entry-level sci-fi reader and the ideal addition to a veteran fan’s collection, John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War will take audiences on a heart-stopping adventure into the far corners of the universe.
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.
The good news is that humanity finally made it to the stars. The bad news is that, out there, planets fit to live on are scarce–and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.
Responsible for protecting humanity, the Colonial Defense Force doesn’t want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You’ll be taken off Earth, never to return. You’ll serve two years in combat. And if you survive, you’ll be given a homestead of your own on a hard-won planet light-years from home.
John Perry is taking that deal. He thinks he knows what to expect. But the actual fight is far, far harder than he can imagine–and what he will become is far stranger.
“Gripping and surpassing the original. It’s Starship Troopers without the lectures. It’s The Forever War with better sex. It’s funny, it’s sad, and it’s new.” –Cory Doctorow
“Smartly conceived and thoroughly entertaining, Old Man’s War is a splendid novel.” —The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)
“Though a lot of SF writers are more or less efficiently continuing the tradition of Robert A. Heinlein, Scalzi’s astonishingly proficient first novel reads like an original work by the late grand master.” —Publisher’s Weekly (starred review)
Currently $3 for an ebook on Amazon.com, this is one of the defining novels of my journey into military science fiction. The series goes on to bigger and better things in the universe, but this is the best of them all.

CompTIA A+ Certification: Step-By-Step Guide to Become an Accredited Help Desk Specialist or Technical Support Analyst
CompTIA A+ Certification: Step-By-Step Guide to Become an Accredited Help Desk Specialist or Technical Support Analyst
CompTIA A+ is a great way to start an IT career and grow further in this sector. It is among the most important credentials you need to earn as an IT professional. The certification shows that you have the relevant expertise and experience in the field. For some people, A+ is the first step of getting into the field of IT because it showcases their potential clients and/or employers that they are well versed in various tasks and skills, such as troubleshooting, security, and networking.
CompTIA A+ is recognized worldwide and is fully supported by the Information Technology industry. Whether you are a veteran or a novice in the field, this is a great badge to have. It gives the recruiters confidence and reason to trust you completely when it comes to software troubleshooting, networking technology, mobile devices, and OS configuring.
Obtain CompTIA A+ Certification in 5 Steps
The major step to earning CompTIA A+ is to pass the prerequisite exams. There are two of them in total, which means that you will have to pay a double price to get this credential. To ease the pain, we take you through the key steps you need to take to obtain your A+. Follow them and you will surely succeed.
Step 1: Prepare for the first CompTIA A+ exam
The first qualifying test for this certification is known as 220-1001 (Core 1). And it all starts with preparing for it. This exam basically covers the fundamentals of computer technology. During your preparation, you should explore all the details regarding this test. Precisely, know the exam objectives and study their subsections. Basically, CompTIA 220-1001 comes with the following topic areas:
- Hardware and Network Troubleshooting – 27%;
- Hardware – 27%;
- Networking – 20%;
- Virtualization and Cloud Computing – 12%;
- Mobile Devices – 14%.
In addition, you should know all the other essential details of this test, such as how many questions you will be expected to answer, passing score, time duration, and so on. Basically, the 220-1001 certification exam contains a maximum of 90 questions that you should complete within 90 minutes. To pass this test, you need to get at least 675 points.
Step 2: Register for the CompTIA 220-1001 exam
When you feel that you have understood everything that the 220-1001 test entails and you studied all its topics in detail, you can go ahead and apply for it. First of all, you need to pay the fee of $226. This price may differ from country to country because it does not include applicable taxes. To register for this exam, you should visit the Pearson VUE platform.
Step 3: Prepare for the second CompTIA A+ exam
The next step is to prepare for the second test, which is 220-1002 (Core 2). As you already know, you should start with going through all the exam subjects and then master all of them. The topics of this test are as follows:
- Operating Systems – 27%;
- Software Troubleshooting – 26%;
- Security – 24%;
- Operational Procedures – 23%.
Besides covering these areas, you also need to dive deeper into other important details. For example, you should know about the format, as well as the number of questions, and so on. So, please note that CompTIA 200-1002 has a maximum of 90 questions. The length of the test is 90 minutes and it can be taken in the English language, just like the first exam. You can also pass it in German, Spanish, Thai, Japanese, and Portuguese.
Step 4: Register for the CompTIA 220-1002 exam
After studying for the 220-1002 certification test and knowing everything about it and its topics, it’s high time to take the challenge and sit for the real exam. Start by paying the fee and then register via Pearson VUE. Try to score at least 700 points. To get this mark, as well as the one for CompTIA 220-1001, you need to learn all the topics with great deliberation.
After passing these two exams and achieving the passing score, you will definitely be awarded CompTIA A+.
Step 5: Ensure you recertify
After taking the above-mentioned exams and earning your credential, you should know that the badge doesn’t last for a lifetime. CompTIA A+ is basically valid for 3 years. You can renew it through its Continuing Education (CE) program. You need to get 20 or more Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within the course of 3 years for the renewal.
Enjoy Benefits of CompTIA A+ Certification
Obtaining the A+ certificate is the right way to build a career in the IT industry. This credential demonstrates that you understand computer software and hardware. Once it helps you get into the field, you will be able to apply the skills you have gained through the certification program to other career opportunities in the related areas.
CompTIA A+ can open the doors of opportunities for you in many ways. Even without any practical experience, this credential can help you secure the entry-level positions. With this popular badge, you can qualify for various job roles. They are as follows:
- Help Desk Specialist;
- Desktop/IT Support Specialist;
- Technical/Desktop Support Analyst;
- Technical Support Specialist;
- Field Technician or Field Service Technician.
Apart from applying for these great positions in the IT field, you can also get the ones in other realms because all the skills you gain are widely used in almost all types of businesses. This means that with the CompTIA A+ certificate, you can find work in manufacturing, education, finance, retail, or any other area of your choice.
Conclusion
You can start building your IT career that promises lots of benefits and better pay by earning the CompTIA A+ credential. Many well-known companies and organizations require that their employers to be the holders of this certification. So, if you really want to be in high demand by many big IT firms, then this certificate will be your own-way ticket to success.

“The Songs of Distant Earth” for 2
Tags:Books, Fantasy - Science Fiction
Earth refugees threaten a peaceful space settlement in this influential novel from the Golden Age science fiction author of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
More than two thousand years in the future, a small human colony thrives on the ocean paradise of Thalassa-sent there centuries ago to continue the human race before Earth’s destruction.
Thalassa’s resources are vast-and the human colony has lived a bucolic life there. But their existence is threatened when the spaceship Magellan arrives on their world-carrying one million refugees from Earth, fleeing the dying planet.
Reputed to be Arthur C. Clarke’s favorite novel, The Songs of Distant Earth addresses several fascinating scientific questions unresolved in their time-including the question of why so few neutrinos from the sun have been measured on Earth. In addition, Clarke presents an inventive depiction of the use of vacuum energy to power spacecraft-and the technical logistics of space travel near the speed of light.
“Clarke’s simple, musical style never falters in this sobering yet far from bleak commentary on humanity’s longing for the stars. Highly recommended.” –Library Journal
