    Wearing the Cape

WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPERHERO? Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic. And now she has some decisions to make. Given the code-name “Astra” and invited to join the Sentinels, Chicago’s premier super-team, will she take up the cape and mask and become a career superhero? Or will she get a handle on her new powers (super-strength has some serious drawbacks) and then get on with her life-plan?In a world where superheroes join unions and have agents, and the strongest and most photogenic ones become literal supercelebrities, the temptation to become a “cape” is strong. But the price can be high—especially if you’re “outed” and lose the shield of your secret identity.Becoming a sidekick puts the decision off for awhile, but Hope’s life is further complicated when The Teatime Anarchist, the supervillain responsible for the Ashland Bombing, takes an interest in her. Apparently as Astra, Hope is supposed to save the world. Or at least a significant part of it.

Super hero stories are better known for being told through a comic book medium, so I’m always happy to run into a long form novel that attempts to tell a story, and boy howdy am I happy that I found my way to the “Wearing The Cape” series. It’s always a fantastic feeling when you love a book, then find out there 10 more in the series, and to top it all off, they’re all on Kindle Unlimited.

The universe that Marion Harmon has created feels fully fleshed out from the first novel, with novel interpretations of classic super powers and a singularly unique take on a classic science fiction trope that I’ve never run into before. I’ve seen literally hundreds of hours of content involving that concept and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this particular version of it, which blew my mind. While reading this first book I was constantly reminded of Max Brooks’ “World War Z”, less for the content and more for the writing style and considerable back stories that happen throughout, with some in depth thoughts on tried and true superhero situations that I’ve started to take for granted.

I can’t recommend this enough if you’re a superhero fan.

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Pierre Leduc, Fabien Polack. With Kevin Michael Richardson, Jack Black, Khary Payton, Chris Pratt. The story of The Super Mario Bros. on their journey through the Mushroom Kingdom.

Illumination studios has weaponized nostalgia, reducing it to a most potent and deadly series of theme songs, visual cues, character revelations, and story elements. I have a few notes to complain about, primarily doing with the completely out of place dog scene in the first third of the film, but other than that the entire thing is a damn near perfect medley of 40 years of Nintendo memories. It’s a great film, has a great soundtrack, and I look forward to the 15 sequels that they’re going to be doing.

    Trees Lounge

Trees Lounge: Directed by Steve Buscemi. With Carol Kane, Mark Boone Junior, Steve Buscemi, Bronson Dudley. Tommy is an unemployed mechanic who spends most of his time in a bar (Trees Lounge) in a small blue collar town. He seems to always be thinking, “If only X then I could stop drinking”.

Written and directed by Buscemi, this movie has no plot or moral at the end of the story, but it does join other films that let the lens linger slightly longer than usual after the final scene, ala ‘The Graduate’. There’s a ton of big names in this film, Debi Mazar, Sam Jackson, Chloe Sevigny, Carol Kane and Mark Boone Junior all make substantive appearances, but every single one of them are believable as just regular people going about their regular lives trying to reach their goals. Those goals are something that the main character doesn’t have, doesn’t know he needs them, but is constantly looking for fulfillment in a world that only gives it to people that take it.

I’m going to be going on a huge wave of movies like this, with people struggling to find their way due to either their own weaknesses or because of things they can’t control and “Trees Lounge” was a great start to that list.
