Some Desperate Glory

While we live, the enemy shall fear us. Since she was born, Kyr has trained for the day she can avenge the murder of planet Earth. Raised in the bowels of Gaea Station alongside the last scraps of humanity, she readies herself to face the Wisdom, the powerful, reality-shaping weapon that gave the majoda their victory over humanity. They are what’s left. They are what must survive. Kyr is one of the best warriors of her generation, the sword of a dead planet. When Command assigns her brother to certain death and relegates her to Nursery to bear sons until she dies trying, she knows she must take humanity’s revenge into her own hands. Alongside her brother’s brilliant but seditious friend and a lonely, captive alien, Kyr escapes from everything she’s known into a universe far more complicated than she was taught and far more wondrous than she could have imagined.

I’ve long thought that the military science fiction genre that I’m so deeply in love with has an issue with diversity in it’s author lineup, with 10/10 of the authors that I’ve read in that space being men, so starting back about 10 years ago I thought I’d just pick up the next book written by someone other than a dude, and boy howdy and I here to tell you that Emily Tesh absolutely hit it out of the park with this one. The basic premise is a familiar one, there was a war, one side lost, but not everyone on the losing side has accepted their fate and are struggling to find a victory in their defeat. Nearly exactly at the 50% mark of the book though the story gets turned from a familiar post-apocalyptic military science fiction space adventure into something even more in vogue in recent movie successes. I won’t get into the gory details, but I’m happy with this implementation of the story elements and can happily recommend it to anyone that’s been a fan of the military scifi stories by John Scalzi or Marko Kloos.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” Review

The film follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.

Adding to the list of movies that are going to do well despite having a non-standard animation style, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is yet another reboot of the teenage superheroes, this time having the boys be young teens, around 15, instead of older teens, 18 or 19. There’s a few references to previous outings, but none of them are over the top nor really all that noticeable. This movie is it’s own thing and it’s going places with a television show already announced along with a movie sequel, both of which eventually ending up on Paramount+.

    “Robots” Review

A duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.

Feels like a low budget film, but with some big budget results, it’s a feel good story via the redemption of two pretty terrible people that are doing their best to take advantage of society’s expectations via robotic exploitation. The special effects and camera work are where my perception of the budget comes through, but all of that was saved by a solid story, great acting, and cohesive ending.

    “Twisted Metal” Review

Follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

While it’s much better than it has any right to be, it’s still a streaming only series based on a series of games that had a plot of “cars with guns shoot at each other in an arena”, so any amount of plot in the TV show is going to outshine the barebones premise of the classic games, of which I remember more for their ads than the gameplay. I honestly don’t even know if I really played the games themselves!

I have some minor quibbles about the CGI, but for what we got it’s fine enough to say this was an enjoyable post-apocalyptic travel story.
