Schedule for Shore Leave 41.6: The Director’s Edition.

In case you had not heard, SHORE LEAVE will be hosting it’s 2nd straight virtual fan convention on July 10 & 11, 2021 at www.shore-leave.com.

I’m told that they’re going to be using a combination of ZOOM and a system called GATHER TOWN to create a “virtual convention floor” where attendees can create their own personalized avatar, and using that will be able to walk about the convention area and converse on-line with other convention attendees using their system’s camera and microphone.

If you participate, please let me know how it goes!

  • A word of WARNING in regards to Disney Premier Access and Black Widow

Natasha confronts her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake.

“Premier Access” does not give you the ability to watch the movie on it’s release night of 7/8/2021, but only gives you access to the film after it’s “Official” release date of 7/9/2021. Here in my hometown there’s at least 40 showings of the film that start in about an hour and a half, so it’s hard to understand why Disney is making anyone spending $30 on a single movie for a single person wait until a full day after the rest of the world has an opportunity to watch it.

I spoke with a CSR with Disney+, and as you can imagine they had no idea what the complaint was, repeating that the “official release date for Premier Access is 7/9”. Well that’s all well and fine, but that’s not what happening here in the real world. This is obviously going to be the last time that I try this Premier Access program, it just isn’t work the money that i’m spending on it. I realize that Disney is an empire built on hubris, but there’s no way that this film is worth more than what I would get from a $25 AMC A-List subscription: 3 movies a week, on the day of release, and any format I want. With DPE, I get to spend $30 for a single film, wait a day after release, and only on my couch.

It’s an ok couch, but not $30 per movie ok. Actually, it’s a terrible couch and I need to replace it, but alas, I’m still broke from my own terrible financial decisions.

Here’s the release schedule for a local theater

Did you know Joe Biden sat out the Vietnam war after receiving five student draft deferments and a medical exemption for having asthma as a teenager? This is despite Biden being a college football star and working as a swimming pool lifeguard.

This, after five years ‘President Bone Spurs’… maybe he contracted it while he was in South African prison for trying to see Nelson Mandela hur hur hur…

    Adoptable Kittens

My quarantine project has been taking care of a stray cat that showed up at my house extremely not pregnant at all, but then getting extremely pregnant very quickly.  She turned into a giant whale of a cat, then gave birth to six kittens!

We’re going to keep one, an orange tabby named Miles, two more are going to family, so three of them are still up for adoption.  Obviously if you’re reading this on MCS, you’re not likely going to be in the area that they’re adopting out of, but I figured I might as well start sharing pictures of them.

So there they are!  Three adorable cats!  That’s Kira with the super pink nose, and her sisters, Ezri and Jadzia.

Just completely random names with no theme at all….

Eaglemoss Graphic Novel Collection #3 Hive

IN THE DISTANT FUTURE, the entire galaxy has been completely assimilated by the Borg and its King, Locutus. The only hope for the future lies in the past – in the hands of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Written (?) by Brannon Braga, the sum of the book feels like a well done story board for a two parter from a Trek series that was canceled before this story got put on film. It’s a good story, but it doesn’t do the “comic thing” very well, with a number of scenes that would have done pretty well with a live action cast but fall slightly short on a 2 dimensional piece of paper.

There’s some good starship art in the book though, so if you were to want a reason to read this, there it is. Also: time travel, the Trek Trope that just won’t go away!

    Unicorn Store

Directed by Brie Larson. With Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Joan Cusack, Bradley Whitford. Kit, a twenty-something dreamer, receives an invitation that would fulfill her childhood dreams.

It’s been on my watch list for years and I finally got around to it this last weekend as I was nursing a hangover and was completely bored by life and angry that I had so many responsibilities. I feel like this movie is a good response to anyone feeling that way, as the Brie Larson character is someone with stars in her eyes, with a slight sarcastic glint that makes her just throw away all her rainbow hobbies and get a ‘real’ job where she’s harassed by an older guy and gets all her ideas shot down because they’re incredibly BAD.

It’s a four year old movie at this point, but still the rest of this is spoilers:
She doesn’t even get her unicorn at the end of the story, and I half way think this is the story of a woman that has a psychological break and is only barely saved by a guy she met at a hardware store.

    Wrath of Man

Directed by Guy Ritchie. With Jason Statham, Holt McCallany, Josh Hartnett, Rocci Williams. The plot follows H, a cold and mysterious character working at a cash truck company responsible for moving hundreds of millions of dollars around Los Angeles each week.

Another Jason Statham, starting Jason Statham playing Jason Statham in a role that Jason Statham was born to play. All jokes aside, it was a very well done ultra violent film with an engaging narrative structure that gave some fresh air to a really old and abused story trope.

    Avengers & X-Men Axis 2014

Now, born of the murder of Charles Xavier, World War Hate has begun.Tony Stark discovers a secret truth that will upend not only his life, but also the lives of everyone he cares for.Can The Avengers and X-Men finally unite? Would their combined strength be enough to hold back the darkness of the Red Onslaught?

Amazing story that interrupted another series I was reading (Avengers World) that bring back Onslaught, which hilariously enough I don’t think actually moved a single leg during the giant battle in the first few issues.

    It’s good though, very good.

    Avengers World

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have returned from the stars– but on the world they left behind, new threats have emerged, and The Avengers will be tested like never before. In one cataclysmic day, the face of the Marvel Universe will change forever– and the fight for Earth’s future will begin. A globe-spanning epic of empires and armies, and the brave few who stand between them and us.

Yet another great Marvel book that gets interrupted by a World Event, then completely goes off rails and never really gets back to what it started as.

I can highly suggest the first four or five issues, but after that the story just wanders from big event to big event and doesn’t even have an ending, just a continuation (maybe?) into yet ANOTHER World Event.

    Avengers AI

HARDER. BETTER. FASTER. STRANGER. The triumph of Hank Pym turns to tragedy for the human race…an unfathomable Pandora’s Box of destruction! When a brave new world is unleashed, only one team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can save us from the future – AVENGERS A.I.! THE VISION! HANK PYM! VICTOR MANCHA! DOOMBOT! The mysterious ALEXIS! MONICA CHANG, AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D.! The AGE OF ULTRON is over! The AGE OF A.I. is NOW!

A series that just barely evaded the dreaded universe wide crossover with only a single issue dedicated to an event that started in another series (the attack on the Inhumans by Thanos), the story feels like one that was conceived of, approved, then published as written, so there’s a nice beginning, middle, and end. The story gets goofy with time travel to 10,000 years in the future, but is enjoyable if you don’t ask too many questions or look too closely at what they actually end up doing.

    Captain Marvel 2016

Face front, true believers! The Captain has made her return and oh, how mighty it is. It’s a bold new frontier for Carol Danvers as she soars to new heights in her greatest mission yet–leader of the all-new Alpha Flight space program. Yup, Alpha Flight. As earth’s first line of defense, Carol and her team aim to protect the planet from extraterrestrial threats. But can Carol be a soldier and a diplomat? Especially when an unknown enemy emerges that Carol can’t quite punch. The superstar team behind Marvel’s Agent Carter television series, Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, make their comics debut alongside the awesomely-talented Kris Anka.

One of the many many many Captain Marvel reboots, relaunches or reimaginings, this mini series takes place on a space station that is shaped like Captain Marvel’s logo, which was based off the Kree Empire’s military uniforms. In the first storyline of the series, a group of aliens come looking for Kree forces to fight, see the logo, and start lobbing missiles at the station. There’s some hilarious hijinx that ensue, the book gets off on the right foot, but is then immediately sucked into the universe wide cross over of “Civil War 2” which centers around an Inhuman that can see what’s going to happen in the future. Marvel feels this is great and they can get ahead of all the crazy stuff that’s constantly happening around the world, but Iron Man feels this is going to just trample people’s rights to not be prosecuted for crimes that they haven’t committed yet. There’s a ton of activity happening off page in the CW2 mini series (which I haven’t read) but for the most part the CM series itself stays out of the universe wide story and gets to tell it’s own involving a b-list villain doing b-level villainy.

The covers are amazing, the interior art is captivating, and the story is entertaining enough. I got the entire thing from a local comic shop’s $0.25 bin though if that tells you how the rest of the world feels about it.

  • The Prom

The Prom: Directed by Ryan Murphy. With Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington. A troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.

Director Ryan Murphy did a fantastic job at pairing two different types of America: the glittery hollywood stereo types with way too much screen smoothing and the down home towns where high school sports are when most residents hit their peak. There’s huge name stars and the film is fun, but didn’t leave an indelible mark on my soul.

Eden: Created by Justin Leach. With Kari Wahlgren, Kyôko Hikami, Kentarô Itô, Marika Kôno. A human girl secretly raised by robots starts to uncover the dark secrets behind her lush, utopian world where humanity has all but vanished.

4 episodes long and 25 minutes per episode, I have to wonder why they bothered to make this a mini series and not a movie. The story is familiar to anyone that’s read or watched a post-apocalyptic movie in which the robots have taken over and humanity is all but a rumor, along with giant mechs, apples, AI, and robots in AI and AI that maybe isn’t AI, but is definitely AI.

Quick enough to check out, it’s a pretty movie with a well done remix of everything I love about the genre.

I purchased this in a collection of star trek magazines, and while it says there’s no explicit artwork, there’s still explicit content inside, just not TOO explicit, lots of “dreaming of his touch” and explorations of feelings, a couple of which were more about finding someone who’s felt the same sense of loss that you’ve felt.

It was much better than I was expecting!

    Cascading Reel Slots

Cascading reels are a feature of many video slot games. They offer multiple winning opportunities and generate a high degree of entertainment when included in a game.

Cascading reels allow standard reel icons to be replaced by alternate icons. This could trigger a game or bonus round and really give a boost (which is always welcome!) to your prize pot when you are playing.

    How Cascading Reel Slots Work

To understand how cascading reels work, think of a game like “Tetris,” where matching symbols make elements disappear and cascade downward. In slot machines with this technology and feature, winning combinations of icons cause the software to kick in to provide video animation. This causes the icons to disappear and allows new symbols to appear to replace the ones there before.

New symbols coming into view can be the key to all sorts of winning combinations, and these, in turn, can cause more symbols to disappear and even more new icons to land on your paylines.

    Winning Potential Of Cascade Slots

Cascading reels are worth waiting for, as they have good prize-winning potential. They can appear in high volatility casino slots real money games, where the waits can be reasonably long between wins. The big plus point of these games is that wins can be very lucrative.

There is also the possibility of cascading reels triggering a slot bonus round or game, guaranteeing more winning opportunities. This can increase the entertainment value, especially if you are not a fan of the straightforward spin and win formula of some of the more traditional games.

These bonus games can sometimes be quite complex. They offer game providers the opportunity to show off their design skills and imaginative use of the latest technology, involving plenty of skills and knowledge. This may make you think that you have weight in your own winning potential, although it is essential to remember that, by their very nature, slots are games of luck and chance.

The Most Popular Cascading Reels Slots

    • Lara Croft Temples and Tombs: Microgaming – Triple Edge Studios slot has 5 reels with 243 ways to win. You can win a jackpot of 5000x the bet, free spins and, multipliers that increase with each avalanche. Start your adventure with Lara Croft now!

    • Moon Princess: Play ‘N GO slot Moon Princess is drawn in anime style, and you can play on a 5×5 grid and win up to 5000x your bet. Each princess has her own superpowers that transform or destroy the symbols on the screen, there are free spins, wild symbols, and multipliers.

    • Thor’s Lightning: The Red Tiger slot uses a 7×7 grid where lightning can truly strike. Here you can start Valhalla Spins or Muspell Spins, there are free spins or the god Thor can randomly transform symbols with lightning, even into wild symbols. He can swing out his hammer and remove symbols. This slot is packed with features and action, and if you dare to visit the dark world of the Norse gods, then try it out now.

    • Asgardian Stones: this slot from NetEnt uses the theme of the Norse gods and implements it beautifully on 5 reels and 20 fixed paylines. There are huge symbols here that can smash symbols under them, which is also combined with a multiplier. Then there’s the bonus wheel where you can win up to 15 free spins

    • Crystal Rift: The Microgaming slot Crystal Rift is all about precious crystals. On 5 reels with 25 lines, you can win with Wild symbols, Cascading reels and the special Wild Grid feature. This is activated after three consecutive wins, and every symbol that appears on the displayed field is turned into a wild symbol. There are four different patterns.

    Speed 2 Cruise Control

Directed by Jan de Bont. With Sandra Bullock, Jason Patric, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison. A computer hacker breaks into the computer system of the Seabourn Legend cruise liner and sets it speeding on a collision course into a gigantic oil tanker.

This is a curious movie and has the feeling of a script that was named something like “panic in the ocean” but was shoe horned into the “Speed” universe when the first movie did well enough to warrant a sequel. Sadly there’s no Keanu, but Jason Patric does a fine enough job as the new romantic partner of Sandra Bullock. Interesting enough, the guy that payed Boba Fett and all the clone troopers in the Star Wars films is here, arguably getting more screen time than anyone else.

This came out just a few months before Titanic, a fact that I had to look up because there are so many scenes that reminded me of that film, guess the lifeboats and deck drama were just obvious parts of a boat-at-sea actiondramedy.

There’s a lot of mock in the film, from the forced actions scenes (underwater line feeding was just goofy) to William Dafoe’s absolutely manic portrayal of a hacker that’s somehow flooding the insides of a boat by flooding the ballast tanks, but I appreciate what they were going for and can see this as the big dumb action film that it is, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than that.

    Those Who Wish Me Dead

Directed by Taylor Sheridan. With Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Finn Little, Jon Bernthal. A teenage murder witness finds himself pursued by twin assassins in the Montana wilderness with a survival expert tasked with protecting him — and a forest fire threatening to consume them all.

Angelina Jolie is pretty good and having seen only one trailer, I missed who the other stars were going to be, so I was pleasantly surprised to see several familiar faces pop up. The movie reminds me, in a good way, of my time playing Firewatch, a 2016 game about loneliness vs being alone, though this movie is much more of a action hero drama than that game was.

How Fair Is an Online Casino in Poland?

A primary concern among most casino gamers whenever they sign up to a polish gambling site is whether the casino is fair or not. That’s because they know without integrity on the site they join, they might end up losing everything.

Also, there has been an increase in online casino sites in Poland, especially since the pandemic started. The strict policies regarding how Polish citizens should conduct themselves amidst the pandemic have seen most of them join the gambling sites.

Gaming is currently a major activity for Poles who want to pass time. You’d probably want to join the casinos, or maybe you have joined but also wondering- are online casinos fair? We linked up with our gaming expert Klara Czerwinska  (view profile), to enlighten you on the key aspects that relate to fairness in online casinos. Check out the subsequent section.

Is gaming on the Polish online casinos unfair?

If you have been losing at the online casinos consecutively, you may begin to think that they deliberately make you lose so that they get a profit. But that’s completely the opposite. Casino gaming is a business that is under the close watch of the regulatory authorities, and that cannot happen especially if you are gambling at a licensed casino.

For a long time, some people have been suspecting particular types of online games because they believe that they make them lose intentionally. The Polish casinos cannot make you lose because they also value their reputation.

There is high competition in the polish online casino gambling space currently. That makes online casinos do everything possible to uphold their reputation. Trusting reviewed automaty online na pieniadze is the first step towards having fair platforms.

If you fail to win as you expect, your game selection could probably be off. Choosing games with a high house edge will limit your chances of winning big at the casinos. However, they increase the chances of the house hence putting them in a position to win more.

For instance, playing slot games will reduce your chances of winning compared to when you play card games such as blackjack. Card games often have a lower house edge, thus increasing your chances of winning higher.

However, there are instances where you might be shocked that the casinos cheat especially when giving the payouts. They might indicate that they do 100% payout only to give you 95%. That’s a fraud that you shouldn’t be silent about. Report to the gambling authorities to help you solve the issue in time.

Things to check out to avoid becoming a victim of unfair site

    Is the site regulated

There are many gambling authorities globally that help in overseeing the major operations in the casino sector. Every country has a gambling authority that handles the licensing of casinos and other vital aspects of gambling.

They ensure that the games offered on the casino do not get rigged and that fairness remains a priority on such casinos. If you join a regulated casino, you will be on the safer side and avoid your casino outcomes from the rigging.

Have the games gone through independent testing

The term might sound sophisticated, especially when you hear it for the first time. Independent testing refers to a scenario where each of the casino games goes through independent analysis to ascertain that they are ideal for you.

Asking yourself questions such as “is online blackjack fair” is not enough as you have to consider if the game has undergone independent testing or not.

    Research about the casino

You must be aware that not every casino that claims to be licensed has a license and is a fair casino. Licensed casinos will always want to display their licenses on their website. If you note that you are on a site that does not display the license or any sign of a regulatory authority, you will know that it’s not legit.

Also, check on the kind of games offered alongside the bonuses. There are illegitimate sites that use bonuses to entice gamers into joining them, only to be shocked that they are not offering players exactly what they need.

As you can see, the casinos are fair. However, it also depends on the site you choose to join. If you join the wrong site, you might end up losing.

    Exterminate All the Brutes

With Raoul Peck, Josh Hartnett, Denis Lyons, Caisa Ankarsparre. The path to the new world, an unsettling and intricate story of genocides. Conquest, slavery and the fabrication of “Whiteness”.

A four hour movie in four 1 hour parts, “Exterminate All The Brutes” is a tightly woven story of the act of genocide, how it happened in the past, how it’s happening now, and leaves us with the thought that it’s not a lack of knowledge of the situation, or a lack of awareness, but a lack motivation to do anything about it. There’s some fictional stuff thrown in with Josh Harnett and others that I don’t really care for, but the rest of the material is top notch and well worth your time, especially if you have HBOMax already.

I should also like to point out that there’s a fantastic Director’s Statement on the HBO site that I didn’t watch until after the entire thing was watched.  I’m not sure if watching it before I started would have impacted my impressions at all.

    The Way of the Dragon

Directed by Bruce Lee. With Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Nora Miao, Ping-Ou Wei. A man visits his relatives at their restaurant in Italy and has to help them defend against brutal gangsters harassing them.

Did they actually film in the colloseum? That’s pretty cool! I started watching this because Chuck Norris was billed as being in it, and I had just watched his “Missing In Action” film. It’s a good movie without him, which is good, cause Norris doesn’t show up until the very end looking very young and without a beard, but his role was fantastic regardless. This wasn’t a Norris film though, Bruce Lee gets top billing and is absolutely amazing.

I originally found the movie on justwatch where it said it was streaming on Pluto.tv, but boy howdy that version of the movie was absolutely garbage. It looked like it was a hand cammed version of the film with dubs by the local A/V club, with jittering and smearing of the image, so I decided to get the criterion collection version, which ended up being the best choice here, you’ll never go wrong with a Criterion version of a film.
