One of the last films that I watched in 2022, but here I am saying I watched it during 2023. It’s a great look bad at a wonderful career, one that I didn’t know spanned as many tv series and decades as it did. I also didn’t know that the entire seven seasons of the Mary Tyler Moore show is on Amazon Prime, a show that apparently Betty White was on for a while, so now I have that on my list of shows to watch.

JJ and Syrah on a huge stack of blankets we have in the corner of the couch, they’re both very happy to be up that high.

Charlotte and JJ.  It seems that JJ has been able to force a nap on everyone she gets too close to!

We got a cat nip growing set and it came with this 1 inch thick by 4 inch round disk that when you add water to it turns into a large bucket of soil like cocopeat to grow the cat nip in.  It’s all set up and under my office grow lights now, I’m sure I’ll offer updates down the road on this particular plant.

Back in the day when I would travel I would take maybe one large bag.  Now I can’t even go over night without packing the minimum of 4 bags, with laptop, breathing machine, pillows, and electronics.  Getting old sucks.

I’m reading a book and one of the authors seems to have coined the term “felis interius” to refer to cats that live their entire lives inside our homes and never go outside.  It was an interesting read and I’ll have a review out one day.

Someone on facebook showed these on a facebook group, so I promptly went out and spent $10 on one from ebay.  It’s cool, but I may have overpaid, lol.

Miles and Odo.  Miles has been over grooming to a worrying degree lately, but the vet says that it appears to be psychosomatic and he’s likely just being over stressed from things in his daily life.  It started right after we adopted out one of our last adult foster cats, which prompted me to consolidate our kitty litter bins down from 3 to 2, so after some research I’ve added a couple more litter bins to the house and we’ll be keeping a close eye to him.

I never did watch a ton of wrestling during Ric Flair’s time at the top, but it would be hard to say that I never heard of the dude, he was at the center of a LOT of interesting stuff going on in the industry. This is a great, if self serving, documentary about his blessed but troubled life. It barely touches on his less than admirable qualities, with the womanizing, drinking, cheating, fraud, or bad parenting being mentioned but in a “whew, glad that’s over with” type of style.

It was entertaining none the less though.

Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water: Directed by James Cameron. With Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home.

I have seen this movie and my initial reactions are that it’s definitely a movie, it’s definitely set in the same universe that the first movie was in, I’m pretty sure these are mostly the same actors, but it doesn’t quite capture the things that made the first movie work. They’re still using the same type of technology that the first movie had, so it’s still an exceptionally pretty film, but the story this time around was less than what I was hoping for, with a myopic focus on a single family while a whole planet’s worth of stuff is going on in the background.

On the technology side, they tried to do some high frame rate stuff that looked like complete garbage at my local AMC. I’m not sure if our equipment wasn’t able to keep up with the demands of the movie, but I saw the frame rate get down to the teens at a few points, then the video would go into the high 100’s trying to catch up with the audio track. The experience reminded me of when I tried to set up a media center PC but it wasn’t really up to the task. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what the 4k/hdr release is going to eventually look like, because I sadly think that’s going to be a better experience than what I got in the theaters.

Bolt: Directed by Byron Howard, Chris Williams. With John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Susie Essman, Mark Walton. The canine star of a fictional sci-fi/action show that believes his powers are real embarks on a cross country trek to save his co-star from a threat he believes is just as real.

I ran into a discussion about this film on reddit with a post about how this movie went from being a concept called “American Dog” to the eventual movie that it became. They mentioned someone was claiming this was one of the best Disney films released in 2008, which I found to be dubious, but since I have D+, I figured I’d see what the hubbub was about. Upon seeing the movie poster, I remember exactly why I’ve always skipped it, because Travolta and Cyrus are both celebrities that I just don’t care too much about, and having them do the voices of cartoon characters feels more like celebrity stunt casting than anything merit based. At the root of it, the film is a Truman Show style gas lighting situation for this poor dog, who’s convinced that he’s a super-hero by a bonkers directors that’s a little too into the craft than he should be.

The movie’s good, not best of the year good, but good enough that if it’s on in the background I might mention that it was an enjoyable film, but I definitely won’t be going out of my way to watch it again.

I was surprised to recognize Anthony Rapp as one of the college fellows at the beginning of the film. The movie still holds up just fine, but it was funny to see that this Ron Howard movie had a brief cameo from his daughter during the institutionalization scene that made me rewind and rewatch.

As a Netflix film, it’s done well enough to be watchable, but I’m not entirely sure this would have done very well in movie theaters. There’s enough star power here though to have made an impact I think. It’s well enough out of my wheelhouse that I don’t have a high opinion of it, but I bet if you’re into this type of fantasy / fairy tale stuff you just might like this one.

Captain America: Directed by Rod Holcomb. With Reb Brown, Len Birman, Heather Menzies-Urich, Robin Mattson. A recipient of an experimental body enhancement chemical retaliates against his would be killers as a star spangled superhero.

I bought this two movie dvd on a whim, it was only $6 and came from Shout Factory, so why not? The two movies were Captain American (1979) and Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1980), both of which were made for tv movies with the same solid feel that the Hulk show had during that same time period. This first movie sets up Cap as Steve Rogers, the son of a scientist that experimented on himself, then died, and who’s partner sought out Steve the beach bum to continue the experiments. Reb Brown plays Cap and he’s a tall blonde guy with a stupid strong chin and is ripped BEFORE the drugs, and truth be told they made no effort to visually distinguish him pre and post drugs. The story is stilly, the Cap costume is silly, the changes to his origin are silly, but for some reason, this movie works for me.

Captain America II: Death Too Soon

Captain America II: Death Too Soon: Directed by Ivan Nagy. With Reb Brown, Connie Sellecca, Len Birman, Christopher Lee. The star spangled hero must battle a villain’s plan to poison America with a chemical that horrifically accelerates the aging process.

The second of two films, there’s a bit of re-used stuff at the beginning that had me worried for a moment, but after that first section, it’s all uniquely shot material. You’ll be happy to hear that the van that was destroyed in evil’s attempt to kill Captain America in the first film has been fully restored and Steve is driving it around again. In yet another move that reminded me of the Bill Bixby Hulk television series, Cap is sent on a mission to a random town to solve a problem. In this case, it’s the kidnapping of a biological weapons scientist that’s being blackmailed into creating an aging gas that will kill you with old age in just a matter of days!

Cap goes undercover in the town as a painter of cats and carries a cat around and it’s the most adorable thing you could possibly imagine. Also, Christopher Lee is in the film, which seems like he was either slumming or owed someone a favor, because it’s weird to see him here with the rest of the tv riff raff.

There’s one scene towards the end that made the entire thing worth it for me:

There’s some tv magic in which cap is escaping from a prison, he throws his motorcycle to the top of the wall, then deploys a hang glider and is suddenly hundreds of feet over a forest. Not explanation, just a smash cut and boom, he’s so far away that the guards give up on shooting him down.

I wouldn’t suggest these two films unless you’re a huge Cap fan or really want to see what Marvel was up to back in the 70’s.

Greg Bear (1951-2022)

Five-time Nebula winner Greg Bear died November 19, a week after heart surgery from which he never awoke. A CT scan showed stroke damage was caused to many parts of the brain by clots that had been hiding in a false lumen of the anterior artery to the brain ever since an earlier surgery eight years ago. After a review of the possible outcomes by the medical team, and following the wishes expressed in his advance directive, Bear was taken off life support and died two hours later.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Directed by Ryan Coogler. With Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke. The people of Wakanda fight to protect their home from intervening world powers as they mourn the death of King T’Challa.

There is nearly nothing about this film that I enjoyed. I hate to say that, as Chadwick Boseman was damn near perfect as the Black Panther, but he was really only great in movies that didn’t have Black Panther in the title, that first one completely lost me in the plot and lack of logic in its science fiction. Director Ryan Coogler and his writing team doubled down on everything that I disliked about the first film and just doubled down on it, with completely nonsensical moments of science, weird lulls in the film, and completely jarring shifts in tone from moment to moment in the same scenes.

It didn’t help that I was set up to be grumpy already, and one of the things I’m going to talk about is a bit of a spoiler, so be fair warned!

For my showing, right before the movie, there’s 30 minutes of trailers. Fine, we’re used to AMC lying about the movie start time, but two things happened right at that 30 minute mark: an advertisement from Target showing off Iron Heart’s full suit of armor, something that would have been great to have seen for the first time in a movie and not some shitty advertisement for a shitty corporation. The second thing is that right after that ad, the movie started and a lady trying to find her seat in my row straight up turns on her cell phone’s flashlight, shining it in everyone’s eyes and making a complete ass of herself. I think I was the only one to say anything, but I did and she told me to mind my own business. She then proceeded to be on her phone for about a quarter of the film, making me even more cranky. Now that I’ve set the mood and started spoiling things for the film here’s some more spoiler complaints.

For the last couple years, Marvel’s been setting up Julia Louis-Dreyfus to be a female villain version of Nick Fury, showing up at the end of Falcon & The Winter Solder and Black Widow, collecting super-heroes to likely join her future team that’s likely to be named Thunderbolts. The movie’s already been announced, we already know she’s in it, JLD is an amazing comedian, her work in Seinfeld and Veep was by all means a fantastic success, but her portrayal as “The Contessa” is downright out of step with what the rest of the MCU is doing and reminds me more of Mr Bean than any serious villain, either political or super. Every scene the character was in here in “Wakanda Forever” was just weird with how out of place the entire thing felt. Also out of place was Martin Freeman, but that was more because the story just didn’t know what to do with him and at best had him in the background doing nothing of interest or importance.

Speaking of background doing nothing, I’m also aggravated that Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams didn’t near the time that she deserved. In the comics, she’s the heart of a couple super teams, smart enough to give Tony Stark a run for his money, and built her suits all herself. In BP:WF she’s a college student that can barely build a suit, can barely fly the suit, then relies on Wakanda’s magically inept super science to build her next suit, and I’m here to tell you, that new suit looks like absolute hot garbage. I’m aware that it’s a MCU take on one of Riri’s comic book suits, but holy hell does it look goofy as all get out.

The best part of this film was Tenoch Huerta as Namor. I’m extremely interested in where they’re going to go with his story and I honestly did not think that the character would work very well on the big screen, after all he’s a budget Aquaman with goofy wings on his feet! It seem that Coogler and his team did the right thing and said “Look, everyone knows who Aquaman is, after all it was one of the few successful DC films in the last 10 years, let’s compare everything that’s similar between the two characters and focus on how they’re different.” The winged feet are still there, but they’re not as silly as they could have been, and as an angry underwater king, Huerta was damn near perfect. Something I also didn’t expect was to ever see Namora on the big screen, but here we are! She didn’t get winged feet, but I liked what they did with her too.

Wakanda has always been ill defined, much to it’s detriment and I think that’s part of why I’m so disappointed by the two main Black Panther films. Their science is all magically perfect, until it isn’t, their city streets all feel like over lit movie sets, their society is both extremely advanced, but still relies on fishing and using spears as their main weapons, all while they have access to some of the most mind blowing advanced energy systems that humanity has ever conceived. Nearly every battle in the movie was a CGI mess of confusion with limited stakes and seemingly random turns of who was doing what.

At the end of the day, this is the movie that wraps up phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This has been a building phase, introducing a new slate of characters, wrapping up older characters, and moving the franchise universe onto the next story. Hopefully we get better things than what this phase has offered, most of this phases movies were just ok to pretty bad like Wakanda Forever. Sure, covid-19 really messed things up on the front end of it, but I think that’s an excuse that doesn’t work in 2022.

I thought this was going to be another one of the interesting but low effort ‘behind the scenes’ that they do for every new Star Wars or Marvel series, but it ended up being a heartfelt look at the director’s life and how he came to be in the movie business. If you haven’t checked out “Werewolf by Night” yet, it’s pretty good, and this director documentary is about as long and is just as good!

Books of Colors and Space Review

The fine publishers at Smart Pop have graciously sent me copies of Star Trek: My First Book of Space and Star Trek: My First Book of Colors, both of which are “board books”, aimed at readers that are just getting out of the “eat the book” phase of their education and are moving into the “look at the book” phase.  Both are beautifully illustrated by Jason Kayser, with Colors being 100% hand illustrated and Space being a hybrid of official NASA photography with Trek art elements added.  There’s maybe only about 100 words between the two books, but within that limited word count are some extremely deep cuts, including references to coffee nebulas, shoeless Gorn, and Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination.  If you’re an advanced Trek reader, these aren’t going to blow you away, but if you’re an advanced Trek reader, you’re not the target audience, are you?  Author Robb Pearlman certainly makes the effort for you though, with a series of color declarations that are both informative and poetical.

There’s long been a huge disparity between Star Wars and Star Trek with how they focus on their target demographics, with Trek not having much in the way of beginner reader materials or even young adult content, usually aiming more for the adult market.   Don’t believe me? In just the last year Star Wars has had at least 10 different children / YA novels in just the High Republic storyline.  There’s hundreds of other books aimed at younger audiences over the last 40 years of publishing for that franchise, and as much as I love space wizards with delusions of grandeur, I still prefer Trek with all of it’s slightly more down to Earth storylines and character.   Something you’ll not catch Star Wars doing is having an actual astrophysicist, Erin Macdonald, PhD, writing books that lay the groundwork for a lifetime of STEM appreciation with a veneer of Star Trek coating it.

Hellraiser

Hellraiser: Directed by David Bruckner. With Odessa A’zion, Jamie Clayton, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey. A take on Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic where a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites.

Not as good as the best Hellraiser (the first one), nor no where near as bad as the worst one (anything after the second), this 2022 Hulu exclusive release is eminently watchable. Odessa A’zion as the POV character does a fantastic job, the soundtrack is on point, and the cinematography is suitable for the genre. As always, I’m still not a big fan of the Cenobites, they’ve always felt a little too goofy to be taken seriously, even when they’re trying their best to be mysteriously horrifying. Up to the point that they showed up with their flayed flesh and pinned heads I was completely enamored by the story that was being told, but then they rolled in with their leather and latex and just goofed the whole place up.

It’s watchable and if you’re a fan of the franchise you’ll not want to miss it.
