A Civil Action
Tags:Movie Posters, Movie Reviews, Movies
“A Civil Action” was released in 1998, directed by Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, Money Ball), and stars John Travolta, Robert Duvall, William H. Macy, Tony Shalhoub, John Lithgow, James Gandolfini, and has an appearance by world renowned comedian Stephen Fry. The plot follows a hot shot lawyer (John Travolta) fresh off a case in which he was able to secure a settlement of $2 million dollars for his client. He’s then doing a victory lap / advertisement on a local radio program when he’s ambushed by a woman that says she’s his client but he’s done no work for her and she wants him to come up to her city to explain why. Turns out that one of his partners had taken on a case from a group of people in a small town, but ignored them in favor for cases that made the firm money. The group had suffered several leukemia deaths, they were suspicious that the water from their wells was causing the deaths due to possible contamination from local businesses, and wanted help getting to the bottom of the situation, and if possible security an apology. The group is told that there isn’t much that can be done, because they’ve not present any “deep pockets” for the law firm to go after, but after a classic Hollywood moment, Travolta’s character has the first of several epiphany moments in which he puts pieces together to forward the story.
After he puts together an official complain the case immediately goes to trial, an interesting turn events that skips right over any alternative methods like arbitration or mediation, moving right to a jury trial. During the trial there’s several moments of judiciary intrigue in which the judge (John Lithgow) seemingly sides with the defendants several times, even going so far as asking for a summary decision from the jury on if the case itself should move forward. The scientific specifics are left for montages and are quickly moved past, a shame because it’s the science that the entire case seems to rest on. After nearly an hour and a half of film, we finally get a decision on the case, which is to say that it’s settled out of court for far less than they should have settled and none of the families that originally brought the complain are happy with the results. There’s no apology, there’s a limited financial settlement, and no one is required to clean up the dumped chemicals. In what feels like an after thought, it’s discovered that there were some shenanigans afoot, some lies to the EPA, and a new case was brought by the federal government, resulting in the closure of the offending businesses and a clean up of the affected areas.
Throughout the film Travolta’s character is poised to be a classic “hot shot learns his lesson about what’s really important in life” character which he does do, but only after financially ruining his firm, losing his home, and putting himself into considerable debt. On a technical level this is a well made film with some exceptionally well done camera angles (particularly when Travolta first finds the chemicals in the first act), with well it scenes, and a sound mix that worked well for the locations and topics highlighted throughout the movie. The acting on Travolta’s part was on brand for him, with a slightly over the top attitude about his character, but the rest of the cast performed their roles exceptionally, I particularly thought William H Macy did well as an exasperated financial-man who was at his limit with the case’s expenditures.
As for the legal aspects of the film, this is very much a Hollywood movie with the actual legal matters being glossed over or ignored for the more dynamic and entertaining “man on a mission” style story that really is fun to watch, but ends up lacking substance. The courtroom drama that we did see was largely in montage form, with some backroom confrontations that were entertaining, but not likely realistic.

An emotionally exhausting but somehow still dry account of the recent scandal that burned through Hollywood, starting with film producer Harvey Weinstein. All the pieces are there and you’ll welcome to watch, but there’s not a whole lot of new or groundbreaking content to be had. Maybe we didn’t need new views on the sexual assault scandals though, maybe just having a beat for beat accounting is what’s best for future viewers.

A perfectly enjoyable FF story that feels like a classic Stan Lee adventure with the gorgeous and appropriate art by John Romita Jr. The story itself revolves around a seemingly unstoppable force that’s arrived at Earth to inform humanity that it’s time is up, like a much more decided alien from “The Day The Earth Stood Still”. There’s a classic Stan Lee resolution to the story involving phoning a friend who in turn phones his creator and it’s all wrapped up in a neat bow in which the heroes prevail and all of humanity is saved. It’s a good book and a great modern story by Lee.

A bundle of loose ends get dealt with, storylines end and a potential future is begun, but this appears to be the end of the 9 book series that focuses solely on Astra, the tiny powerhouse who’s had some pretty incredible adventures over the course of a decade of books that I was lucky to be able to read over the span of just a month and a half. The entire series is on Kindle Unlimited, so it cost me maybe about $20 to read them all, and there wasn’t a stinker in the entire main series of books! There was one spin off book that I just didn’t care for, but that was more because I’m not a huge vampire fan I think.
If you want to check out one of the best superhero book series that’s ever been released, this it is right here. I’m looking forward to more books, which apparently are going to start coming out this year!

A ton of things, it’s been too long, so here’s a non-descriptive title!
This was good, but super sweet. I was hoping for more sour, but it was good for what I needed at the time.
I added yet another screen to my office setup, this one is to more better monitor twitch chatter when I’m doing the twitch thing. I can also just take it down and use it to read comic books.
Odo testing out the new setup. He doesn’t care about the screen.
I dropped a tool on my foot and my god it stung. I then proceeded to do a ton of yard work with no pain whatsoever, but then. . .
when I took my shoe off, I had so much pain it was incredible, I couldn’t put any weight on it at all. Went to urgent care and got 3 x-rays of my foot and was told that there’s no break, but I should stay off it for a couple days. 24 hours later I felt no pain at all, weirdest thing ever.
The power of the sun HIDDEN from my EYES. my new black out goggles for use while I’m using my CPAP machine. They’re different and it took me a week to get used to them, but now that I’ve settled into them they’re working out great. Not sure if they’re all so much better than my normal sleep masks though and maybe one day I won’t need the CPAP?
I used to have Mondays off, but my corporate overlords have decided that was impossible to support, so now I’m back to working 5 days a week. This is the opposite of progress and my twitch career is tanking now 🙁
Miles has chicken legs at 7:20pm.
Miles and Charlotte in their reclined glory.
The 240 twitch aquarium now has a night light, it looks pretty cool.
if you notice in that last picture, I have a monitor hanging up over the fish tank with the time, temperature and calendar on it. Well, it used to be a full “All in one” computer that was hanging off the wall and I was using that to run the twitch feed for the fish tank, but it couldn’t do it very well, so now it’s just a (larger) monitor hooked up to a laptop under the tank. It works so much better now.
Tofu, rice, and mixed veggies, this was a delicious meal and I loved every moment of it.
I was wondering why I was enjoying some cauliflower dip so much, turns out the first ingredient is cheese! I think I’m going to keep eating it, but I’m gonna have to eat much less than I have in the past.
Regula 1 from Star Trek 2. A bit of movie trivia, this same model was used as a space station in the first Star Trek film, but it was flipped upside down!
This is the version of the Enterprise from the pilot episode named “The Cage”. There’s not a whole lot of difference between this version and the one used in the series, but there’s enough that spaceship nerds like me enjoy having them both on a shelve together.
This is the USS Titan from the Lower Decks series, but I think I may already have this specific model, just packaged differently and not damaged during shipping.
$50 for a fantastic book collection, Miles helped me sort through them, turns out that nearly all of them are new to my collection in some way or another.
Collectors edition of a game I own digitally, it’ll sure look nice on a shelf.
I bought a matching hoodie and sweat pants set from a school that I’m going to. what a nerd, right?
Fast X
Tags:Movie Posters, Movie Reviews, Movies, The Fast and the Furious
Things move very fast in this, the 11th movie in the franchise (don’t forget to remember to not forget about Hobbes and Shaw!) and is the start of a trilogy of movies that might could possibly finish up this furious story that they’ve been telling for over 20 years.
Jason Momoa is a breath of fresh air in terms of bad guys for these films, we’ve seen many mustache twirling baddies doing bad things just for the sake of being bad, getting rich, or getting incredible world controlling power, but Momoa is the first psychotic bad guy that we’ve had where yes, there’s mustache twirling and an over abundant amount of monologuing, but it’s all done in an over the top entertaining way that I didn’t know just how to deal with while seeing the flick. I think my final opinion is that I like the character? Like, as is, he’s a good villain, but he’s not “like” I want to buy him a beer any time soon.
Everyone from the franchise makes appearances, they’ve added a couple new ones (Momoa, Brie Larson) and there’s a nice mid credit scene that teases the next film in the franchise which may or may not be an official entry. I bet it’ll be a “Fast and Furious Presents” film.
Top 10 reasons to use mockups
Top 10 reasons to use mockups
In today’s fast paced world, almost everything around us is digital. Thus, most of the actions are done online. That is why laptop mockups are so popular and easy to use. Digital images are used for various purposes, such as marketing, website design, and product presentations.
Designers have probably heard about such a thing as a mockup. Understanding what it is and why it is used is really important. After all, a mockup is an effective way to complement the corporate identity, as well as see your achievements on a live product.
What a mockup is
A mockup is a full-size model of a design used to showcase and evaluate the style of an unreleased product. This can be either a mockup of a 3D model or a photo PSD file. The purpose of the layout is one: to impose your design on the template.
In this article, we will look at the top benefits of using mockups.
Improved Presentation
Transforming your product presentation is one of the main benefits of using laptop mockups. You can display your product on sale in different ways with laptop mockups. Thus, a potential buyer will see the product on the laptop screen in action to assess whether it is suitable for purchase. This is especially useful for website designers who want to show their clients how their website will look on different devices, including laptops.
Cost-Effective
Another benefit of using mockup laptops is their cost-effectiveness. With mockups, you do not need to create a physical model of your product from scratch. A digital representation of a product or website will not only save your business money, but valuable time as well. Thus, there is no need to create a product or website from scratch.
More effective communication with the client
You no longer need to explain to the customer in text what his idea will look like. A mockup on a laptop is the most convenient way to visualise an idea at the start of its implementation.
How different parameters fit
Another important feature of mockups is that at the development stage they allow you to see virtually how all the objects fit together and how comfortable they will be for perception. For example, when you have a mockup of a site, you can use a laptop mockup to evaluate its usability: how beautiful it looks on a laptop, is the font readable, and so on.
Automate routine tasks
Using standard templates, you can save time on drawing designs and photographing products. This is true, for example, for packaging designers. If mockups did not exist, then to show the design of the finished product, the designer would have to print and photograph test samples, which is time-consuming and labour-intensive.
Simple Personalization
Mockups for laptops can also be easily customised. Your laptop mockup may be customised to meet your needs by changing the background, adding text, and changing the dimensions and location. As a result, you can create an unusual and personalised mockup that will differentiate you from other competitors. This is especially helpful for companies that wish to establish a distinctive and recognizable brand identity.
Time-Saving
A laptop mockup can be made considerably more quickly than a physical prototype or a website from scratch. You can create a digital illustration of your product or website quickly and easily using laptop mockups. By doing this, you may save time and concentrate on other crucial facets of your company.
Simple Sharing
It is simple to share laptop mockups. Anyone, wherever they are in the world, can access your laptop mockup through social media or email. This gives you the chance to gather opinions on your service or website from a variety of people, which can be helpful for enhancing the design.
More attractive
Layouts are more appealing to the person viewing your presentation. In addition, they engage the audience. more than standard presentations. Mockups show a mini-copy of the real thing, that is, how it will look in the future when used. Thus, with the help of mockups, you can fully convey your idea and concept.
Improved visualisation
With the help of a mockup, you can fully show how the website will look on a real user’s laptop.
In conclusion, there are many advantages to using laptop mockups. They are cost-effective, easy to customise, time-saving, great for communication, and more engaging than traditional presentations. If you are a business owner, website designer, or marketer, you should consider using laptop mockups to improve your presentations, communicate your ideas more effectively, and create a brand identity that is unique and recognizable.

Data, cats, comics, toilets, and fizzy waters
I got this from Goodwill, it’s a four VHS set of Star Trek TNG episodes that feature Data. On the cover there’s a spinner with various scenes and trivia about Mr Android.
Miles having a nap. he’s a very good napper.
I got a new ornament for my aquarium
Since I’m not drinking alcohol at the moment, I still have an inclination to buy and consume unique beverages and Aldi is helping me out with all these goofy ciders and other assorted fizzy drinks. I’ve only had the lemonade one so far and it was delicious if much smaller than I was expected for a bottle of that size.
I got a cgc 8.5 of the first appearance of “Echo” from a comic show that I went to last weekend. It was a very good show to me, I picked up a ton of Trek comics as well!
Odo posing for the camera, he’s a very good poser.
I replaced wtf ever this thing is called in a toilet and I felt damn accomplished for about an hour or two!
Here’s all those Trek comics I mentioned, there’s about 60 of them, nearly full runs on all these series, all for just $1 each! I picked up a random box of variants too, but I’m not going to show you those for reasons.
Here’s some more random fizzy stuff from Aldi, these are good, but very sweet, and exceptionally full of ginger. Shockingly so.
Another goodwill purchase, I got all these for just $15 and on top of that I haven’t read a single one of these yet.

This was a monthly series until issue #5, which took 8 months to come out and as the final issue it was good enough that I can recommend the story as it is right now. I had completely forgotten that I was even getting the series though and I didn’t know that the fifth issue was even out, so I was a few months behind on getting to it.

This is a refreshingly Aasimov-esque rule breaking story about time travel to the past in a universe that explicitly does not allow for time travel to the past. I didn’t catch a few hints about what was going on, but I eventually figured it out right before the big reveal.
I’m going to be sad when I’m done with these ten books.

High Desert: With Patricia Arquette, Weruche Opia, Jayden Gomez, Christine Taylor. Just as I thought the series was going to have the opportunity to get stale, along comes a collection of stories of Astra bouncing from reality to reality, pulling in characters from other franchises ranging from interesting to amazing to strangely boring. There’s a vacation story tacked on at the end that feels out of place from the other stories, but on the whole this is a great collection and it exposed me to a few superhero universes that I’m determined to check out now.
Wish
Wish: Directed by Chris Buck, Fawn Veerasunthorn. With Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Ariana DeBose. Wish will follow a young girl named Asha who wishes on a star and gets a more direct answer than she bargained for when a trouble-making star comes down from the sky to join her.
I’ve lost about 40 pounds and am now under 290!
I’ve been comfortably living my life since high school (1999!) at around 315 – 330 pounds, then a medical thing came up and it turns out that I’m supposed to be like…100 pounds less than that. So I’ve been on a weight loss “journey” which essentially meant to me that I’m giving up red meat, eating 10 times the amount of veggies than meat, no refined sugar, and I’ve completely dropped coffee from my daily routine. Honestly that coffee thing was a long time coming because I’m so super sensitive to caffeine, just walking past a pot will wake me up, and if I drink any after 2pm I’m awake until 2am.
Oh, and I’m using our treadmill that we bought using the last bit of covid money that Donny sent out, which had been sitting in my wife’s office for the better part of two years. Since she’s no longer working from home, we’ve turned that room into a fun gym and I’ve been doing 2 or 3 miles a day on it. It took me a couple months to get to that though, as I had to start at 30 minutes of 2mph and slowly worked my way up from there. I still have plenty of room to improve on it though, I haven’t been able to keep a “run” going for more than about a minute. One day though!
My goal is 220, we’ll see how quickly I get there, I had said I was going to eat some pizza for the first time again after I get under 290 and here I am, under 290 and no pizza yet. I can only assume that I’ll be back over 290 after I get that coveted pizza.
Scream VI
Tags:Movie Posters, Movie Reviews, Movies, Scream
My wife and I watched all five of the Scream films in an exceptionally coordinated effort in the 3 days leading up to our AMC reservations for Scream VI. Watching them all nearly back to back like that really shows how the franchise and the genre itself has evolved from a navel-gazing, self referential treatise on slashers to something that’s more than the sum of it’s goofy parts. There’s a few things that make no sense whatsoever in #6, but those things are within the wrappings of a well made film, with some serious star power doing their best to be the most alluring targets of Ghostface yet.
Honestly, this was a good film, just sad that they’ve started to reduce the body counts so low now.
Cats, LEGO, Delicious Snacks, and Chairs
I thought Bella was stuck behind the futon, but turns out that she’s still 90% fluid, so she just poured herself out when she got bored being back there.
I’m moving this chair out of my office due to my butt hurting on it and Odo decided that he needed to be on top of it. Turns out that it wasn’t the chair’s fault though, I was pushing myself a little too hard on the treadmill.
This is the last one of these that I’ll be eating for a while. They’re delicious but apparently all my numbers are wacked out and I need to cut sugar out from my diet, nearly completely.
This is the 7th Large format LEGO clock that I have in my collection. I have no clue why I like them so much?
Mile using Bella as a head rest, it was adorable!
THIS NOT MY CAT. But she started hanging around my house a couple years ago and now I’ve managed to convince her to hang out with me in my office for a few minutes every few days.
Syrah IS my cat and is happy to be here.

I’m going to assume that my bad experience with the vampire book (that isn’t even a part of the numbered WTC series) was a fluke, because this third book in the series is right back to being amazing with limited opportunities for me to put it down in a timely manner. I’ve stayed up way too late reading these and I don’t see any reason for that to stop.

I knew what I was in for, but I wasn’t expecting Adrianne Palicki to openly say “I really want to eat your pussy.” while playing a porn star who has issues with cars backing into her and some PTSD from a self inflicted sexual event from her youth.
What I also wasn’t expecting was to enjoy this film as much as I did, the story was engaging and the actors were all great, despite the decidedly puerile topics they cover at times, interweaved with some really heavy stuff about adulthood and finding your way to where you want to be in life. There’s no nudity, but a whole bunch of pretty ladies in various stages of undress and sexual situations, so I enjoyed it like the 13 year old boy I still am.

Super hero stories are better known for being told through a comic book medium, so I’m always happy to run into a long form novel that attempts to tell a story, and boy howdy am I happy that I found my way to the “Wearing The Cape” series. It’s always a fantastic feeling when you love a book, then find out there 10 more in the series, and to top it all off, they’re all on Kindle Unlimited.
The universe that Marion Harmon has created feels fully fleshed out from the first novel, with novel interpretations of classic super powers and a singularly unique take on a classic science fiction trope that I’ve never run into before. I’ve seen literally hundreds of hours of content involving that concept and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this particular version of it, which blew my mind. While reading this first book I was constantly reminded of Max Brooks’ “World War Z”, less for the content and more for the writing style and considerable back stories that happen throughout, with some in depth thoughts on tried and true superhero situations that I’ve started to take for granted.
I can’t recommend this enough if you’re a superhero fan.

Trees Lounge

Written and directed by Buscemi, this movie has no plot or moral at the end of the story, but it does join other films that let the lens linger slightly longer than usual after the final scene, ala ‘The Graduate’. There’s a ton of big names in this film, Debi Mazar, Sam Jackson, Chloe Sevigny, Carol Kane and Mark Boone Junior all make substantive appearances, but every single one of them are believable as just regular people going about their regular lives trying to reach their goals. Those goals are something that the main character doesn’t have, doesn’t know he needs them, but is constantly looking for fulfillment in a world that only gives it to people that take it.
I’m going to be going on a huge wave of movies like this, with people struggling to find their way due to either their own weaknesses or because of things they can’t control and “Trees Lounge” was a great start to that list.

There’s a couple fun side stories that all seem to wind their way back to the main plot in a very satisfying way.
