Star Trek PIcard The Last Best Hope
Tags:Book Reviews, Star Trek, Star Trek: Picard
An original novel based on the new Star Trek TV series!
A thrilling novel leading into the new CBS series, Una McCormack’s The Last Best Hope introduces you to brand new characters featured in the life of beloved Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard-widely considered to be one of the most popular and recognizable characters in all of science fiction.
I was really hoping that this book would be more than a checklist of things that needed to be set up to be mentioned in the first episode of the series, but ultimately that’s all this turned out to be. The federation is nearly unrecognizable in this story, we’re told that stuff is going on but never really get to see it, and this is the second Trek book in a row where the author just straight up forgot to describe the ships that were involved at all. I know from the comic book series that Picard’s ship is actually the new flagship class ship that was featured in the “Star Trek: Online” game, but there was no mention of the unique styles of the ship or even that it was the new flagship class.
I’m also somewhat confused by the decision by the story team to change the events from the movies and comics that have come before, primarily that it was a star named Hobus that had a unique property to it, and when it went super nova it had unique effects through SubSpace and not just normal space. There’s also some significant changes to the story for Spock, in that in the movies he was an active participant in the attempt to save Romulus, but in this story, he’s only mentioned once, and in a way that makes it clear he had nothing to do with the saving of the system or the failure to save it as shown in the 2009 Star Trek film.
If you’re watching the series, there’s nothing in this book that will help your understanding of what you’re seeing on screen. If you want something that might do that, read the latest Star Trek: Picard comic series, then you’ll at least find out where the two Romulans on Picard’s winery come from.
Sonic the Hedgehog

I went to Sonic Burger before hand, because if I was going to have to sit through yet another failure of a video game adaptation to the movie format, I might as well have a delicious Sonic Burger in my belly. I had a Diet Coke during dinner, which definitely quenched my thirst and gave me a slight energy boost from the 42 mg of caffeine, which I was sure I would need to stay away during what I expected to be a slog of heavy handed video game references.
Turns out though, I didn’t need that energy boost, Sonic: The Movie starts off fast and never lets off the peddle, with a story that felt genuine and never felt overly pandering to the fans of a franchise that frankly needed something that would reward them for decades of aimless wandering. The only complaint that I could possibly make is that the product placement is way over the top. In fact, there’s one for Zillow in the movie that’s so over the top I straight up laughed at it for a good 30 seconds after the bit was done.
This was a good film to watch in the theater!

Tags:Star Wars, Star Wars: Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker
The critical reception to ‘Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker’ is baffling in the extreme.
The failure to recognize that this was it, this was the final chance, that’s the reason that the critical response was so hostile. The Phantom Menace had the benefit of being the first new Star Wars content in decades, where as Rise of Skywalker is just another misstep in a long series of missteps.

An interesting first season with some pretty big failures but in the end proves itself to be a solid entry in the fantasy television pantheon. My one big complaint is the silly time shifting mechanic that worked so well for shows like Arrow, but unlike Arrow, everything and nearly everyone looked the same, no matter what time period you were in.
It’s only 8 episodes long, so if you get the chance, I suggest checking it out.

Bought it in 4k in a cheap sale, but man this movie is both good and bad. If you forget that the character was a mass murderer in the comics and routinely killed people just for the sport of it, then forget that there’s a man in there under all that goop, sure it’s an ok movie.
But it’s hard to forget those things, isn’t it?

Another good book from Casey Calouette, it was pretty interesting to see two sides of the same battle, one from orbit in spaceships that are only just barely flying, and one from the ground where tanks are pounding away at each other. It’s been about three years since this book came out, the second in a series, and while I understand the author is busy with life, it would be great if he could write me some sequels. I do recognize that he has had several other books come out and has been dealing with recovering from cancer treatment, so I guess I’ll have to be happy with reading absolutely everything else this guy has written. I’m series, he’s among my favorite authors at this point, only two books in!
Heads up, if you sign up for his email list on his website you’ll get a free book. You’ll also get a free copy of the book if you go to amazon.com and click “give me the free copy“. No idea if you need to be a Prime member or not for the amazon version of the free book.

Soon I Will Be Invincible A Novel review
Tags:Book Of The Year 2018, Book Reviews, Books
Published back in 2007, I’m sad to see there’s been no follow ups or sequels, this story is absolutely fantastic! I spent an entire weekend reading the book, every time I put it down I wanted to get back to it so quickly, it absolutely hit several of my literary interests. Super powers, powerful villains, robots, alternate dimensions, and a TON of misdirection that all gets directed in the perfect way in the third act. If you like comic books and want some longer form fiction, boy howdy is this the book for you.

Solo A Star Wars Story review
Tags:Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Posters, Movie Reviews, Movies
Worlds better than Star Wars: Episode 8: The Last Jedi, Solo feels destined to fail at the box office, largely in part to it’s massive budget (they essentially filmed the movie twice!) and because there’s only been six months since the release of the last Star War movie, of which in my humble opinion was a complete misstep for the franchise.
Solo is what we needed: a Star Wars story with no head tilting winks and nods with plenty of back story and great set pieces that results in a great look into the universe surrounding the Jedi without mentioning the goofy religion even once. I’m pretty deep into the lore of the franchise and I was still surprised at the third act shadow cabinet reveal of who was really pulling the string behind the scenes.
This was a good movie, and of the four Star Wars movies Disney has released, this is the second best.
Here’s how I think they actually all line up, from best to worst :
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
- Solo: A Star Wars Story
- Ep 7: The Force Awakens
- Star Wars Holiday Special
- Ep 8: The Last Jedi

Beyond Skyline review
Tags:Fantasy - Science Fiction, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
I had no intention of watching two Frank Grillo movies in a row, in fact I had no clue he was even in this film, a film that I was only watching to see what kind of a trainwreck it would turn out to be. It’s a sequel to an absolutely horrid movie that I didn’t like at all, but I watched in theaters nearly eight years ago. Maybe it wasn’t actually as bad as I remember it, but there’s a huge different between a movie you pay $15 to see and a movie that’s included in your $15 a month Netflix subscription.
My point is, this movie is about as stupid as the first one, but due to Frank Grillo, the improvement of low budget movie graphics, and I assume a sizable grant to film on the same sets as The Scorpion King 4, I don’t have the same low opinion of Beyond Skyline as I do of the original film. Sure, they’re literally punching the aliens to death (after using guns and rockets, but failing), but that’s just what happens when you get the same stunt team as The Raid or Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Sure, the heroin chemist in the dank dark tunnels has a DNA sequencer and can merge human and alien blood, but that’s to be expected, right? Maybe the giant mechs were a step too far, but truly, is there any step with a movie that can be considered “too far”?
My favorite line from the movie makes no sense at all:
“we did more than just survived, we evolved”.

Murphys Laws of Combat Operations
Q: Murphy’s Laws of Combat Operations
A:
- Friendly fire – isn’t.
- Recoilless rifles – aren’t.
- Suppressive fires – won’t.
- You are not Superman; Marines and fighter pilots take note.
- A sucking chest wound is Nature’s way of telling you to slow down.
- If it’s stupid but it works, it isn’t stupid.
- Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo and not want to waste a bullet on you.
- If at first you don’t succeed, call in an airstrike.
- If you are forward of your position, your artillery will fall short.
- Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than yourself.
- Never go to bed with anyone crazier than yourself.
- Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
- If your attack is going really well, it’s an ambush.
- The enemy diversion you’re ignoring is their main attack.
- The enemy invariably attacks on two occasions:
when they’re ready.
when you’re not. - No OPLAN ever survives initial contact.
- There is no such thing as a perfect plan.
- Five second fuzes always burn three seconds.
- There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole.
- A retreating enemy is probably just falling back and regrouping.
- The important things are always simple; the simple are always hard.
- The easy way is always mined.
- Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy other people to shoot at.
- Don’t look conspicuous; it draws fire. For this reason, it is not at all uncommon for
aircraft carriers to be known as bomb magnets. - Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you.
- If you are short of everything but the enemy, you are in the combat zone.
- When you have secured the area, make sure the enemy knows it too.
- Incoming fire has the right of way.
- No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection.
- No inspection ready unit has ever passed combat.
- If the enemy is within range, so are you.
- The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
- Things which must be shipped together as a set, aren’t.
- Things that must work together, can’t be carried to the field that way.
- Radios will fail as soon as you need fire support.
- Radar tends to fail at night and in bad weather, and especially during both.)
- Anything you do can get you killed, including nothing.
- Make it too tough for the enemy to get in, and you won’t be able to get out.
- Tracers work both ways.
- If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will get more than your fair share of objectives to take.
- When both sides are convinced they’re about to lose, they’re both right.
- Professional soldiers are predictable; the world is full of dangerous amateurs.
- Military Intelligence is a contradiction.
- Fortify your front; you’ll get your rear shot up.
- Weather ain’t neutral.
- If you can’t remember, the Claymore is pointed towards you.
- Air defense motto: shoot ’em down; sort ’em out on the ground.
- ‘Flies high, it dies; low and slow, it’ll go.

- The worse the weather, the more you are required to be out in it.
- Whenever you have plenty of ammo, you never miss. Whenever you are low on ammo, you can’t hit the broad side of a barn.
- The more a weapon costs, the farther you will have to send it away to be repaired.
- The complexity of a weapon is inversely proportional to the IQ of the weapon’s operator.

- No matter which way you have to march, its always uphill.
- If enough data is collected, a board of inquiry can prove anything.
- For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism. (in boot camp)
- Airstrikes always overshoot the target, artillery always falls short.
- When reviewing the radio frequencies that you just wrote down, the most important ones are always illegible.
- Those who hesitate under fire usually do not end up KIA or WIA.
- The tough part about being an officer is that the troops don’t know what they want, but they know for certain what they don’t want.
- To steal information from a person is called plagiarism. To steal information from the enemy is called gathering intelligence.
- The weapon that usually jams when you need it the most is the M60.
- The perfect officer for the job will transfer in the day after that billet is filled by someone else.
- When you have sufficient supplies & ammo, the enemy takes 2 weeks to attack. When you are low on supplies & ammo the enemy decides to attack that night.

- A Purple Heart just proves that were you smart enough to think of a plan, stupid enough to try it, and lucky enough to survive.
- Murphy was a grunt.
- Beer Math –> 2 beers times 37 men equals 49 cases.
- Body count Math –> 3 guerrillas plus 1 probable plus 2 pigs equals 37 enemies killed in action.
- The bursting radius of a hand grenade is always one foot greater than your jumping range.
- All-weather close air support doesn’t work in bad weather.
- The combat worth of a unit is inversely proportional to the smartness of its outfit and appearance.
- The crucial round is a dud.
- Every command which can be misunderstood, will be.
- There is no such place as a convenient foxhole.
- Don’t ever be the first, don’t ever be the last and don’t ever volunteer to do anything.
- If your positions are firmly set and you are prepared to take the enemy assault on, he will bypass you.
- If your ambush is properly set, the enemy won’t walk into it.
- If your flank march is going well, the enemy expects you to outflank him.
- Density of fire increases proportionally to the curiousness of the target.
- Odd objects attract fire – never lurk behind one.
- The more stupid the leader is, the more important missions he is ordered to carry out.
- The self-importance of a superior is inversely proportional to his position in the hierarchy (as is his deviousness and mischievousness).
- There is always a way, and it usually doesn’t work.
- Success occurs when no one is looking, failure occurs when the General is watching.
- The enemy never monitors your radio frequency until you broadcast on an unsecured channel.
- Whenever you drop your equipment in a fire-fight, your ammo and grenades always fall the farthest away, and your canteen always lands at your feet.
- As soon as you are served hot chow in the field, it rains.
- Never tell the Platoon Sergeant you have nothing to do.
- The seriousness of a wound (in a fire-fight) is inversely proportional to the distance to any form of cover.
- Walking point = sniper bait.
- Your bivouac for the night is the spot where you got tired of marching that day.
- If only one solution can be found for a field problem, then it is usually a stupid solution.
- If the enemy is in range so are you.
- Field experience is something you never get until just after you need it.
- All or any of the above combined.

Traveling For The Holidays?
I’m going to be traveling for a little bit of the holidays, luckily not as much as in the past where I was driving all over the state of Florida.
Without fail though, I’m sure that I’m going to run into some asshat that thinks 5 feet is enough clearance behind me while we’re doing 80 miles an hour on I-10. The last trip I took there were a couple of idiots doing 90+ on the road flashing their lights at anyone that wouldn’t get out of their way.
I didn’t get out of their way and blocked them in for about 10 miles with the help of a semi truck.
So, I ask of you, what’s the most mind numbing stupid thing you’ve seen on the road during a holiday trip, either done by someone else or done by yourself?
Star Trek Discovery Episodes s01e01 and s01e02 review
Tags:Movie Reviews, Star Trek, Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek is back on TV, and for better or worse they’ve updated the universe to fit in better with the other content that’s on television. Lots of explosions and lasers and awesome space battles, I really do suggest that you check it out and try not to pay too close attention to the series’s canon nor the science that they try to mention. I have no real complaints, this is likely the best pilot episode of any of the Trek series, all of them were rough or had content that made no sense.
I do have complaints though. I suggested above that you check it out, and that’s where most of my complaints come from. Here’s your options:
Option One:
Watch it live on CBS. Your time to do this has come and gone. CBS ran the first episode on broadcast television, there will be no other episodes on broadcast TV. This particular episode was delayed by 18 minute so CBS could run 15 minutes of commercials for ONLY CBS properties and put in a couple segments from Oprah’s first segment on 60 Minutes. That segment was her moderating a panel of people discussing Trump and the various things have been going on with the Trump presidency. Infuriating to watch and a complete failure on her part to listen to people saying demonstrably false things and not pushing back or showing them the proof of their ignorance or educating them on just how Russian interference would effect everyone in our country. I was legit angry by the time the 60 Minutes broadcast was finished. What a failure on CBS to have that kind of content, what a failure for Oprah to not be able to control the crowd, what a failure for our country to have people that would rather stick to their guns than investigate the world outside of their tiny political bubbles. Shameful of CBS to advertise Star Trek to start at one time and then intentionally push it back to force advertisements for their content out. They had complete control of this process and it’s unforgivable that they would do this. I can’t imagine that any of the local CBS Affiliates were happy with the situation either.
Option Two:
Stream it on the internet. If you’re in the USA, your only choice is CBS All Access. CBS-AA has no free tier and costs either $6 a month for advertisement supplemented content or $10 a month for an “Ad-Free Experience”. I tried out the 48 hour free test of the ad-free version, and while the app is snappy and among the best streaming apps I’ve tried, there’s not nearly enough content on it to justify even a $1/month subscription. I’m already subscribed to Netflix with thousands of interesting series (all the other Trek series are on Netflix) and I’m already subscribed to Amazon Prime (which also has all the Trek series, two of them in HD, the CBS-AA app does not have the HD versions), so why would I want to subscribe to CBS-AA for just one series? None of the other content interests me.
If you’re not in the US, you can stream it on Netflix. You can try to VPN out to a country that Netflix hasn’t blocked yet and try streaming it that way, then at least you’ll be counted as someone that officially and sorta legally watched it.
If you do buy the CBS-AA subscription you should be aware there are only going to be a total of 16 episodes in the first season of STD (yes, that’s the acronym) and they plan on splitting it up into two different segments, the first 8 running from September to November, the second half sometime in Q1 of 2018, so if you’re there just for STDs, you’ll have a few months were there are no new STDs to consume.
So to sum it all up: CBS is screwing the pooch on this series on the business side. Star Trek has always been a broadcast series and it deserves to be in the public eye and not behind a paywall. It’s worth it to watch though, so try out the free 48 hours of ad-free service to see how you feel about it.
