Barry: Created by Alec Berg, Bill Hader. With Bill Hader, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan. A hit man from the Midwest moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city’s theatre arts scene.

This final season was good, but completely unfulfilling for me. Bill Hader took the middling concept of a ex military guy struggling to adapt to civilian life and choosing violence into realms that I don’t think that particular genre has gone before. I didn’t really care for where they ended up, but it was one hell of a journey to get there.

Star Trek: Discovery: Somewhere to Belong

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery are finding that each day is a critical adjustment to their new lives and new missions in an Alpha Quadrant more than nine hundred years in the future. It’s here that Discovery is reconnecting with various worlds where the cataclysmic event known as “the Burn” has decimated Starfleet and, with it, the United Federation of Planets. There’s been precious little time for the crew to truly come to terms with their present reality, as their devotion to duty hides the emotional stress that could impact their effectiveness, and even threaten themselves or others.

After a successful journey to yet another planet cut off from the Federation, Discovery picks up a distress signal located in a nearby star system-a plea that harbors roots from their past lives in the 23rd century, and which may now lead to an entirely new crisis, plunging them all into mortal danger…

I desperately wanted to like this, as I’ve enjoyed Dayton Ward’s previous work and I’m hungry for something that makes me like Discovery at the same level that I’m enjoying Strange New Worlds, but this is exactly like the show in that everyone is moping around feeling their feelings, then talking about their feelings, then doing stuff involving their feelings, then feeling new and exciting feelings. It sounds like a backhanded compliment but this is likely what CBS is wanting from the books, so if you enjoyed the show you’ll very much like this book.
