    SECOND BASE

    Astral Genesis

Jonathan DeVane must assemble a rag-tag team of misfits in an attempt to stop a devastating attack on Earth by malevolent alien raiders called “Astrals“. Can DeVane and his pack of underdogs find salvation in each other, and overcome the demons of their sordid pasts long enough to save the world?

I picked this up at a recent comic book convention based on a some of the promo art that was at the author’s table. I was able to get the book and a art card signed by him and his producer, which the card is going to live in the front of a portfolio that I’m using to transport comics (when I buy them), but the book is likely going to go into my resell pile. It’s definitely not bad and I enjoyed the story but there’s far less spaceships that I was hoping for and the art and plot worked well enough to service the story, but the re-readability is limited for me.

It’d be worth your time to read, maybe not so much to buy a full TPB of the story, but if you see it at a library or have a buddy to share it with, go for it!

    Occulted

When the Hale-Bopp soared across the sky in 1997, Amy Rose thought it was the start of an amazing new future. Instead, it brought news of a horrible tragedy at the Heaven’s Gate compound just down the road. Amy had always known there was something off about the community she grew up in.

I bought this under the assumption that the marketing material that mentioned this young girl lived with a cult that fully believed the happenings of Star Trek had actually happened in some way meant that Trek was going to be more than just a one panel side comment. It’s a great book though and tells a great story, just not as related to Trek as I was hoping for.

Bonus points for having a glow in the dark cover!

    Tron

Tron: Directed by Steven Lisberger. With Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan. A computer hacker is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program.

I found this brand new at Best Buy for just $4, so I figured it was time to add the blu-ray to my collection. I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve owned it, and other than a commemorative laserdisc I have up on a shelf, it doesn’t look like I’ve owned a watchable copy before. Sure I have it on digital, but do you ever actually really own any of that digital stuff?

The film still holds up of course, it’s still a product of it’s time, with stars that were firmly entrenched in the Disney machine, but it has some pretty solid concepts that would show up in hundreds of films after, including just a single sequel decades later. There’s a ton of behind the scenes stuff that goes into the making of the film that’s super interesting and is as interesting as the movie itself.

The Establishment of a MCS Legal Fund needs your help!

Back in January of 2023 MCS’s registered DMCA agent received an email from an attorney trying to get us to disclose our insurance police information to them, which felt like a new attempt at a scam or spear phishing attack, but like all messages sent to the DMCA agent, it was treated as a legitimate DMCA take down notice, and the content was removed within a few hours of the report. The requesting attorney was informed of this, but they chose to ignore the emails we sent back to them, then opened another email thread with another attorney or paralegal (they were never very clear on who exactly they were), and the end of that conversation lead me to believe that they were well aware of our nature as a community of bloggers / image enthusiastic weirdos.

Then in June MCS’s parent company was served with a lawsuit saying that we’d essentially time traveled to 2014 when an image was copywritten, then intentionally posted that copyrighted image in 2012, and went out of our way to strip the image of all the copyright information from the image.  They didn’t mention that during those time travel shenanigans that someone had added words to the images that said “coat hangers really bring out the child in you” and “the joke is abortion”, an obviously crass and low brow attempt at humor, something that we here at MCS excel at.

    “Five Days at Memorial” Review

Doctors and nurses at the intensive care unit of a New Orleans hospital struggle with treating patients during Hurricane Katrina when the facility is without power for 5 days.

This is a series that spends 5 episodes outlining how absolutely terrible and dire the situation was at a hospital with no power, no food, no water, no real security, and no plan to get patients out locally and no real support from their corporate offices, then turns around and spends another 3 episodes vilifying a single doctor for the decisions that she may or may not have made during the final moments of their time in that hellhole hospital. There’s some questions to be asked, but I personally think they should all be directed to the company and not the people that were there volunteering their lives to help others.

KIRA – New World [NCS Release]

    Bird Box

IF YOU’VE SEEN WHAT’S OUT THERE… IT’S ALREADY TOO LATE Malorie raises the children the only way she can: indoors, with the doors locked, the curtains closed, and mattresses nailed over the windows. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall, but soon she will have to wake them and blindfold them. Today they will risk everything. Today they will leave the house. Josh Malerman’s New York Times bestselling Bird Box is a terrifying psychological thriller that will haunt you long after reading.

Bird Box is a quick read, it only took me a couple nights of reading before I went to bed, but it’s a tightly written story without needless exposition or diversions from the main story, for which I’m grateful because this is a solid horror / suspense story that cuts right to the heart of things that I’m personally frightened by: the unseen, the unknown, loss of mental capacity, and the possibility that I’ll injury someone that I care for in my own insanity. There’s a movie, which I’d seen back in 2018 when it was released and a sequel to the movie was just released. I believe the put this book on sale for $2 at the time and I scooped it up. There’s a written sequel to the book which goes in a different direction than the movie sequel, so of course that’s on my wishlist now too.
