    “Argylle” Review

    Argylle: Directed by Matthew Vaughn. With Henry Cavill, Daniel Singh, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose. A reclusive author who writes espionage novels about a secret agent and a global spy syndicate realizes the plot of the new book she’s writing starts to mirror real-world events, in real time.

    Directed by Matthew Vaughn, who’s well known for his Kick-Ass / Kingsman series of movies and comic books, this movie will feel familiar with fans of those franchises, as he’s refined his standard camera technical abilities, overly long action scenes, and overly complicated plots to a point that ‘s a fine meal that you really need to have the appetite for to enjoy fully. Luckily, I was ready for the feast and while there were a few detractors (Cavill’s hair in every scene he was in) the benefits far outweighed them.

    Making It So

    The long-awaited memoir from iconic, beloved actor and living legend Sir Patrick Stewart!

    At just over 450 pages, I thought this was going to be a slog to get through, but Stewart’s writing style is snappy enough that even his descriptions of his childhood home’s lack of a toilet was interesting enough that I was able to finish this in just a couple reading sessions. Surprising to me however was both how open he was about his marital mistakes and how little he talked about his time making Trek and the various movies that he did afterwards like the X-Men franchise or the smaller roles he had like “Green Room”. He didn’t even start talking about Trek until the halfway point in the book! I’m sure he could write another two or three books about those experiences, but in the sum of his life, Trek is just one small part of what he’s proud of and that his stage acting is where his pride really lies.

    This is a good book and if you’re as into Trek as much as I am, it’s a great look into the mind of the of the finest actors on the series. I think he’s the first of the TNG cast to write a book about his life, but hopefully he won’t be the last.

    Moms for Liberty are neither real moms or for liberty. Real moms don’t preach hate into the hearts of children. Real moms don’t reject their children just because they’re a little different. Anyone for liberty doesn’t ban books or seek to deny truth from our education system. No, these are hateful disgusting people who are actually harming our children and our nation. And I am so very tired of campaigning against them in schoolboard elections. So very very tired.

    7 votes: Saborlas on Don’t get why the two are illegal for the most part:
    Because there’s profit to be made by keeping them illegal. Some drugs being illegal means that the legal drugs have a near monopoly. Illegal drugs that are popular among certain marginalized populations means you can arrest members of those populations over harmless behavior. This keeps for-profit prisons rolling in cash and slave labor.

    Worth noting, for the “both sides” crowd: The law in question includes the words: “willfully retains it or fails to deliver it”, so Biden likely hasn’t committed a crime, at all, while Mr. Trump, and his lawyers, (or, as I prefer, lolyers), have, in fact, inarguably committed a number of felonies. Ghouls the lot of them. School lunch should be free for every student. No child should go hungry at school because they’re parents are struggling financially. This same party wants to dismantle public education entirely so only the rich can have educated kids so this move doesn’t surprise me. Their cruelty is their legacy. May they lie rotten and never mourned.

    “Beacon 23” Review

    Beacon 23: Created by Zak Penn. With Lena Headey, Stephan James, Wade Bogert-O’Brien, Natasha Mumba. A man living in the 23rd Century works at a remote “lighthouse” in space that serves as a beacon to help passing ships.

    I had no clue that MGM had their own streaming service and I don’t think I knew that Lena Headey was doing a hard science fiction series until about a week before it started. It’s a well done short season with one or two sets, but with multiple groups of actors, I don’t think there was a single episode where it was the same people on the Beacon at the same time for the entire episode, always with new comers, late leavers and time time jumps back to when important things were happening decades earlier. It’s good and was just approved for a second season, so we have that to look forward to some day.

    “I Love Trouble” Review

    I Love Trouble: Directed by S. Sylvan Simon. With Franchot Tone, Janet Blair, Janis Carter, Adele Jergens. P.I. Stu is hired to investigate the past of a millionaire Johnson’s wife who is missing. Stu finds that the wife had left her home town with an actor, went to college using a stolen identity and purloined $40,000 from a night club.

    Starring Franchot Tone as a slick talking private eye on a seemingly small time case that turns into something much larger and a series of some of Hollywood’s most beautiful women from the time: Janis Carter, Janet Blair, Adele Jergens, and gem of my eye, Glenda Farrell as the PI’s girl Friday. She has much more of a role this time around, much to my delight, but she’s not the star, so the majority of the screen time is Mr Tone’s. He does very well with it though and I’m happy to say this is a fantastic mystery story that starts off fast at a 1948 Bank of America and ends with bodies in the ocean and women lining up for one final kiss. It’s often difficult to go back to the source for modern tropes, and there’s none used more than a murder mystery, but “I Love Trouble” has enough unique and captivating elements to it that even though the movie just celebrated it’s 75th anniversary it’s still as fresh as the day it originally hit the silver screen.

    Unicorn Precinct

    Humans and elves, dwarves and gnomes, wizards and warriors all live and do business in the thriving, overcrowded port city of Cliff’s End, to say nothing of the tourists and travelers who arrive by land and sea, passing through the metropolis on matters of business or pleasure-or on quests. The hard-working, under-appreciated officers of the Cliff’s End Castle Guard work day and night to maintain law and order as best they can. Arra Cynnis is the youngest child in one of the most powerful families in the wealthy district of Unicorn Precinct. When she’s found murdered, with the culprit’s identity hidden from the magickal examiner’s spells, the Captain of the Guard sends his best investigators. Ex-soldier Torin ban Wyvald and half-elf Danthres Tresyllione have two viable suspects: Arra’s fiancé, who is the cousin of another member of the Castle Guard, or the unknown person with whom Arra was having a torrid affair. Torin and Danthres must navigate the difficult political waters of Cliff’s End’s upper classes in an attempt to determine the girl’s killer. Complicating the case is the unexpected appearance of Torin’s estranged father, who has come to return the detective to his far-off homeland of Myverin, and he won’t take no for an answer . . . . An all-new adventure of the Cliff’s End Castle Guard!

    I bought this entire series back when they were just $1 a pop, I love DeCandido’s Star Trek work, so it seemed like a no brainer, and it turned out to be a fantastic leap of logic because this series has turned out to be a rather entertaining set of stories all surrounding a genre that I otherwise wouldn’t have given even a moment’s notice to.

    “A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa” Review

    A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa: Directed by Kirk R. Thatcher. With Steve Whitmire, Dave Goelz, Bill Barretta, Eric Jacobson. When Gonzo accidentally diverts three letters to Santa, he talks Kermit and his friends into delivering them to the North Pole personally.

    A “made for tv movie” this isn’t the best Muppet content that I’ve ever seen, but it’s also not the worst, that sorta recent tv office comedy they did certainly takes that case. There’s a few fun guest stars and the songs are passable enough, but there’s no real bangers here like there are in the Muppet’s Christmas Carol.

    “Clerks III” Review

    Clerks III: Directed by Kevin Smith. With Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Vincent Pereira, Mike Zapcic. Dante, Elias, and Jay and Silent Bob are enlisted by Randal after a heart attack to make a movie about the convenience store that started it all.

    I bought the 4k copy of this a while ago, I think right about a year ago, watched the flick, then put it back in it’s case with the intent to get back to all the special features that are on the disc, of which there are a couple hours of documentaries, which honestly shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone that knows much much Mr Smith loves to talk and gush about things he has opinions of. Since that time, I’ve had my own health scares that made some major life changes and going back to re-watch this was something I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to and to be honest I was having some minor depressive episodes while watching the film.

    That’s obviously not Smith’s intent, but there’s a few parts that resonate with me now that didn’t back in 2022 and honestly every time I look around to see what I’ve accomplished with myself there isn’t much that immediately comes to mind, especially in light of Smith’s level of achievement. It’s not all bad though, because I know there’s plenty that I’ve done and I’ve affected enough people that it hasn’t all been a waste.

    Strategy to win in volleyball on 1xBet

    Today, betting in India is a very popular trend that allows one to earn money on predictions. In particular, one of the favorite sports of this country is volleyball. In order to bet on this discipline, one needs to register on a relevant online platform such as 1xbet online betting app. It is available to adult users who understand the game and are ready to monetize their skills by betting on specific competitions.

    One should start by creating an account and studying the information on the bookmaker’s website. This will help one understand all the internal processes and remove several questions. Then, one needs to make a deposit, get a welcome bonus, and make the first bet on the minimum amount to start as a bettor as comfortably as possible. One will also have to verify oneself in order to quickly and safely deposit and withdraw winnings to one’s details in the future.

    Let’s consider the peculiarities of betting in preview and real-time mode on volleyball. It is more interesting, of course, to make a bet directly during the live broadcast, when users can react to all the twists and turns of the match. However, many novice bettors make their predictions in advance, filling in the coupon and hoping that luck will smile on them this time.

    How to earn money at 1xBet on volleyball betting

    Everyone can earn effectively and steadily on betting. At 1xBet, the following tips will help you to be successful when betting on volleyball tournaments:

    • be sure to study statistics and analytical data of professionals to make your predictions;
    • make predictions regularly, not just occasionally;
    • constantly research everything related to this sport, including following the favorites of the games in this discipline;
    • develop your strategies and don’t stray from them;
    • make bets with a cool head; do not let your emotions take over and confuse you;
    • don’t give up betting in case of a loss; it’s just experience, and it comes in different ways;
    • plan your gambling budget: determine the amount you are willing to lose per day and do not exceed it;
    • train your intuition, and listen to it.

    High odds and minimal margins are waiting for users on the site, so there is no point in looking for another bookmaker. In addition, 1xBet offers a comfortable mobile application; having downloaded it to your smartphone, you can efficiently perform all the actions to bet on your favorites more often. This can be done at any convenient time from wherever you are in the world.

    The key to success for any bettor when betting on a team or volleyball player is an adequately chosen betting strategy and an understanding of how the situation may change during the match. That is why users like to bet in live streaming mode.

    The presence of a license, many years of betting experience, and a top position in competitors’ ratings also speak in favor of the service. In addition, bettors note the generous bonuses and incentives they can get on this portal as active players. One can choose the currency and method of depositing into the gaming account, as well as withdrawing prize money to a bank card or e-wallet.

    Please pay attention that earning money on sports betting and cybersports depends more on the user than online casinos, where the winnings are determined by trivial luck and the laws of statistics. If you love volleyball and understand this discipline, register at 1xBet and start earning on your hobby. You have all the chances to become a top bettor if you have patience and regularly devote time to your favorite hobby on the platform of the popular bookmaker.

    “Cop Out” Review

    Cop Out: Directed by Kevin Smith. With Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Juan Carlos Hernández, Cory Fernandez. Jimmy’s rare baseball card is robbed. Since it’s his only hope to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, he recruits his cop partner Paul to track down the robber, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster.

    Many people point to this film when they say that Kevin Smith can’t hack it has a director of anything other than his own material and while I agree that his strengths are with things that he has complete editorial control over, I disagree with the idea that this is a bad film. The story is great, the jokes all land, and for better or worse, Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan both prove why they’re appreciated by so many. The worst I can say about it is that this is an antiquated type of movie with elements that aren’t done all that much these days.

    As a side note, I remember this movie as the first movie that I ever watched from the treadmill that I had at the time. I walked the entire thing and I think I ended up doing about 7 miles. It ended up doing me more harm than good though because it started a cycle of doing too much on the treadmill, then not using it for weeks on end.

    That wasn’t the movie’s fault.

    SeaQuest 2032

    In the early 21st century, mankind has colonized the oceans. The United Earth Oceans Organization enlists Captain Nathan Bridger and the submarine seaQuest DSV to keep the peace and explore the last frontier on Earth.

    Seaquest was an action adventure / fantasy science fiction / military science fiction series that ran from 1993 – 1996 for three seasons, all of which were as different from each other as they could be and still be part of a serialize television show. The first two seasons featured Roy Scheider of “Jaws” fame as the captain of the titular submarine, the beautiful Stacy Haiduk, the hunky Don Franklin, and teenage heart throb Jonathan Brandis, the last two actually stayed on the series for all three years.  There’s also a animatronic dolphin named “Darwin” who I swear to god I thought was a real animal right up until I was watching the behind the scenes features on the bluray and they showed all the cables and triggers that were set up to make him move and talk.  The first two seasons had stories that ranged from good to terrible featuring plots like “a previous captain is now a bad guy!”, eco terrorists, underwater archeology, aliens, and time travel. Those first seasons also featured Bob Ballard of the Institute for Exploration, who famously took a trip to see the Titanic (and survived!) and has been a huge champion of underwater research for much of his life.  He’d pop on after every episode with some cool facts about things under water during the credits and I have vivid memories of thinking how cool that guy was to know so much about everything I was vaguely interested in at the time, I think I was around 13 when the show first aired!  The show featured a number of guest stars that caught my attention both at the time of airing and now, people like Tim Russ, William Shatner, Seth Green, Charlton Heston, Luis Guzmán, Mark Hamill, Michael York, William Shatner’s mustache, and Brittany Murphy.  The practical effects were all at the top of Hollywood’s ability at the time and the behind the scenes mentions that they had their own in house cgi effect team that could turn things in super quick, and they were also extremely top of the line for the time period.  Season one is more action/adventure and ends with the Seaquest being blown up along with all of it’s nukes at the same time to save the planet by sealing a magma flow deep in the ocean. Seas two picks up a few years later with a new Seaquest being sent out into the world and they introduce the GELFs, genetically engineered life forms, former soldiers that were created for war but then no one knew what to do with them after the wars were over, so most of them were sequestered into a prison camp on an island, all but a ‘simple jack’ forerunner named Dagwood that was a prototype and had nearly no aggression, who turned out to be a terrible soldier but a decent janitor. This is a storyline that was also used in another series from this time period, “Space: Above and Beyond” where it was done much better imho.

    Season two also brought the production of the show from Hollywood to the Tampa Bay area in Florida, which at the time was right down the road from where I was living.  It was super cool to see various landmarks that I knew show up in the show, and they even featured at least one of the local news anchors as a future science fiction news anchor on the show.  They lost Bob Ballard as an after episode treat and they removed the voice over from the main theme, both huge losses to the show’s ability to present itself as anything resembling inspirational or educational.

    Here’s season one’s intro:

    And season two’s:

    Season two ends with the Seaquest being blown up on another planet to stop aliens from invading.  Yes, really.  They went full science fiction in season two and I honestly missed some of the more naivety that season one had.  They had murder plants, rogue AI, and time travel.

    Season three skips 10 years in universe time and somehow the Seaquest is plucked from destruction and planted into a corn field in the middle of the US with no contact from the aliens and we never hear from them again.  Captain Bridger decides he’s done with military work and absconds back to his island paradise (to be seen a couple more times in both friendly and antagonistic roles), and the main theme is changed completely.  They only aired 10 episodes for season three so I never got the time it needed to grow on me.  I think it could have if they were given a full season, but alas:

    The third and final season featured some great episodes with follow ups on previous plots, international intrigue, politics, underwater fighter fights, and time travel.  It then ends after killing off one of the new characters introduced that season, introducing another one, and setting the stage for a pretty cools storyline that we’re never going to actually see.  I own the bluray set of the show now, but I’m honestly not sure if this is going to end up being like Avatar: the Last Airbender where I do a rewatch every couple years or more like The Flash television series where it looks really pretty up on my shelf but I have no interest in actually watching it.  I do love the show still and I’m happy to support it by having the set.  Maybe one day they’ll do a SeaQuest 2042 series?
