“Forced Retirement” What if Alzheimer’s struck the World’s Mightiest Hero? His daughter, heroic Hericane, finds out the hard way. Not if Hericane recruits the one big gun who stands a chance in Hell of stopping her father in his tracks. But the battle of the century between the super-charged titans might just kick-start the Apocalypse instead of stopping it.

Being dropped face first into a super-hero universe can be rough, especially with characters that have oddball super abilities. At the end of the day this is a “what if superman got super mentally ill and his daughter had to fight him” story with some shenanigans from assisting heroes. Well done and sets the stage for the next five stories.

“Heroes of Global Warming” The world’s hottest hero has gone rogue! In an age of global warming, super-heated hero Skillet looks like a lukewarm loser. But when his teammates, the Castigators, turn their backs on him, he turns the Castigators into prey. Let the hunt begin! Skillet becomes public enemy number one as he rounds up his former allies. But the secret plan behind his hunt might just save the world.

Unrelated to the other stories in this collection, this one off story was tightly written and executed.

“Forced Betrayal” Who murdered the girlfriend of the World’s Mightiest Heroine? Super-powered Hericane will stop at nothing to find out who killed the woman she loved. But when she teams with Bonnie Taggart, internal affairs investigator for the Superhuman Protectorate, the search leads in unexpected directions. Fighting their way through the darkest corners of Isosceles City, Hericane and Bonnie tear the truth from criminal chimpanzees, crooked promoters, and hateful cops, only to fall prey to a terrible trap.

Related to the first story, and while it seemed to go on much longer than was necessary, the ending was worth the wait.

“The Wife Who Never Was” What happens when a truly super hero loses the love of his life in the continuity overhaul of his fictional universe? Mighty Pinnacle’s super memory won’t let him forget his lost marriage to Doris Dane, and his aching heart drives him to search everywhere for a way to bring her back. But all his power might not be enough when he runs up against a force from beyond his world, an enemy with the secret to his suffering.

It’s a familiar story and has a nice twist to it that feels unique.

“Forced Partnership” Hero-on-sidekick violence explodes in this hard-hitting super-hero tale. Why does Partycrasher, dark avenger of the night, give his sidekick the beating of a lifetime? Could it be the cowled crusader has fallen under the influence of sexy reformed bad girl Linda Loveblind, aka Partygirl? Or has the sidekick truly committed a heinous crime for which there can be no forgiveness? Maybe the answer is none of the above.

Which of these narrators can be trusted? Well done version of the twisted reality story.

“A Matter of Size” Who is killing the world’s smallest super-heroes? Down-on-his-luck masked avenger Man-Child takes the case, but can he save the remaining Small Wonders from a killer with a twisted crush fetish? Man-Child takes on villainous Mammon and Stigmata without missing a beat, but his own dark secret might be enough to bring him down for good.

It’s a short story, but a good one.

“11 Minutes” Review

11 Minutes: With Jonathan Smith, Dee Jay Silver, Kelly Pollard, Jason Aldean. Through emotional first-hand accounts and never-before-seen archival footage, this documentary immerses viewers inside the largest mass shooting in our country’s history, at what was supposed to be a festival celebrating country music.

This is both one of the most difficult documentaries to watch, but also one of the most maddening, with all the real terror of the night hidden and censored, only the hallways scenes at the hospital were really showing the full depths of the insanity, the rest of it feels like a sanitized and nearly bloodless incident that doesn’t properly exhibit the scale of destruction that happened. Other than the censorship issue, this is an exceptionally well written and directed documentary that offers a stark reminder that it’s still just as legal today as it was on this night to purchase 10,000 rounds of ammo and set up a kill room.

“Shadow and Bone Season 2” Review

Shadow and Bone: Created by Eric Heisserer. With Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman. Dark forces conspire against orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov when she unleashes an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world.

As with the first season, this series works best when it’s not worried about the B-story and whatever shenanigans they’re up to in a completely different part of the world from the A-story, usually with less interesting characters and much less interesting story elements. Everyone is very pretty with amazing costumes and utterly fantastic special effects that made me drop what I was doing when they were on screen, specifically the smokey demon creatures that were routinely being fought towards the end of the season. Sadly this is the last season we’re going to get of the show, as it’s now been canceled with little hope of being picked up by another distributor. The ending of this season however came with at least a half dozen different endings that added an extra 30 minutes to the episode, all of which happened after the climax of the season, leading me to believe the cancellation news came to the show well after they put the whole thing in the can.

The show’s based on a trilogy of books, so if you want to find out the ultimate conclusion to it all, that’s where you’ll need to look. If you do, let me know what you thought of them, because I already have a TBR pile about 200 books deep that I’m never going to get all the way through.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” Review

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: Directed by Gil Kenan. With Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

A perfectly worth entry into the Ghostbusters franchise, I’m happy with how the small steps they’re taking seem to be building towards something larger, but all while making good smaller stories. This is something that Marvel use to do very well, but then they transitioned to focusing more on the meta story and less on the single story and now we’re in the mess we’re in now with them. This movie however is a fun one with internal consistency, good call backs that aren’t too heavy handed, includes great foreshadowing and includes all the necessary guest stars that are all more than just cameos. My only complaint, and it’s a small one that I can easy forgive, is that there’s returning characters from the first film, both of whom were living hundreds of miles away and are somehow how living down the street from the Ghostbuster family. I was ok with the explanations, but it was funny to see them again.

“City Without Men” Review

City Without Men: Directed by Sidney Salkow. With Linda Darnell, Edgar Buchanan, Michael Duane, Sara Allgood. A young woman’s husband has been imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. In order to be near him to try to help him get his sentence overturned, she moves into a boardinghouse near the prison whose residents are the wives of inmates.

Set 5 months before WW2 starts, a handsome harbor pilot is engaged to a beautiful school teacher, but in a horifying turn of events, he’s framed for bringing in Japanese spies from a strange boat off shore. e’s sentenced to prison where his would be wife is trying to visit him and she runs into our gal Glenda Farrell, who sets her straight about how to get into the prison to visit, then recruits to live in a house with other women that live by the prison to be close to their imprisoned men. There’s some shenanigans afoot with the women and they (without the knowledge of the wife to be) convince all their men to stage a prison escape with the help of the not-so-guilting harbor pilot, but through sheer happenstance, the sinking of a boat in Mexico proves that the pilot wasn’t guilty of being a spy ferry. There’s a couple side stories of a woman involved with another man while waiting for her husband to get out of jail, a drunkard lawyer and a washing company that all the women work at, which serves to fill out the world the ladies are living in, making it as real and vibrant as a black and white film can be.

Released in 1943 while the war was still happening, i can only imagine how the film was received by the general public, but it has enough of the standard issue Hollywood style patriotism that I can only assume it was received well enough. It’s a find film, though my copy I bought from Amazon is is terrible transfer, with at least 3 different levels of visual issues, I see reel skipping from the original celluloid, vhs visual waves along the top, then a low bitrate encoding on the DVD. Combine that with the lousy audio, this wasn’t a great experience and one that I originally started with my wife in the room, but knew that it would take a dedicated Farrell fan to get through and while she’s happen to sit through the better transfers, this wasn’t one of them.

I like the story though and am happy to have seen it.

Jonathan “John” de Lancie, Jr. is an actor, director, producer, writer, voice artist, and comedian, best known for his portrayal of Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. He also portrayed the character in Star Trek: The Game Show and Star Trek: Borg. In addition, de Lancie co-wrote the novel I, Q with Peter David and has narrated audio adaptations of several novels, including Q-in-Law (with Majel Barrett Roddenberry) and Dark Mirror. His Borg costume from his latter video game appearance was sold off on the It’s A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay and was also worn by Michael Reilly Burke, Gary Hunter, and Tom Morga.

“Love Lies Bleeding” Review

Love Lies Bleeding: Directed by Rose Glass. With Anna Baryshnikov, Kristen Stewart, Dave Franco, Katy O’Brian. Gym manager Lou falls for Jackie, a bodybuilder who is passing through town en route to a competition in Las Vegas.

The trailer for this went hard as hell and Katy O’Brian’s muscles sealed the deal for me, I loved her performance in The Mandalorian. Added to that, this is an A24 release and while I’ve not seen anything by Director Rose Glass before, if A24 believes in her, I’ll definitely give her a chance. I’m happy I did because this movie is so deliciously grounded in a gritty reality that when the special effects start, they’re at first alarmingly jarring, but in context of when and how they’re happening it’s well within the universe that Glass has created and didn’t distract from the film in the least. Kristen Stewart has been picking some captivating roles, I deeply enjoyed her in 2020’s “Underwater” and based on her comments on Colbert, I’m going to be enjoying her work for a while to come, which is going to include a movie that she’s directing herself!

“Drive-Away Dolls” Review

Drive-Away Dolls: Directed by Ethan Coen. With Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Joey Slotnick. Jamie regrets her breakup with her girlfriend, while Marian needs to relax. In search of a fresh start, they embark on an unexpected road trip to Tallahassee. Things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.

The only reason that I saw this in the theater was because my hometown plays a large part of the narrative, but unfortunately it was in name only and didn’t have a single scene in the actual city and in fact features a few locations that don’t even exist at all in Tallahassee, like a dog track. I don’t think we’ve ever had one, That one disappointing point aside, this was a hilarious film with great characters and a great story that’s was just over the top enough to be enjoyable.

Shame they couldn’t get the feel of Tallahassee correct though.
