Even before Star Trek I’d see him popping up in bit roles on some of my favorite TV shows like Get Smart, Sea Hunt, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And then one night he brought home Polaroids of himself in makeup and wardrobe for a pilot he was working on. It was December 1964 and nobody had heard of Star Trek. Still, the eight-year-old me had watched enough Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian to understand exactly what I was looking at.

Spock’s popularity happened quickly, and soon the fan magazines were writing about dad’s personal life, characterizing us as a “close family.” But the awkwardness that defined our early relationship blossomed into conflict, sometimes smoldering, sometimes open and intense. There were occasional flashes of warmth between the arguments and hurt feelings—even something akin to love—especially when we were celebrating my father’s many successes. The rest of the time, things between us were often strained.

My resentment towards my father kept building through the years. I wasn’t blameless, I know that now, but my bitterness blinded me to any thought of my own contribution to the problem.

I wanted things to be different for my children. I wanted to be the father I never had, so I coached Maddy’s soccer, drove Jonah to music lessons, helped them with their homework—all the things dads are supposed to do. All the things I wanted to do. So what if my Dad and I had been estranged for years? I was living one day at a time.

And then I got his letter.

That marked a turning point in our lives, a moment that cleared the way for a new relationship between us.

“Pantheon” Review

Pantheon: Created by Craig Silverstein. With Katie Chang, Paul Dano, Aaron Eckhart, Rosemarie DeWitt. A young woman starts to get messages from an unknown number that claims to be her deceased father. Trying to uncover the truth, she stumbles upon a larger conspiracy involving the singularity.

One of two shows that I missed completely when they first aired, this is the more grounded one with a look into the possibilities of uploading consciousness into near future technology and the ethical, political, and spiritual consequences of the entire situation. The story doesn’t make many missteps and moves quickly from easily understood concepts to some really off the wall (but still familiar) sequences that will blow your mind if you’re not deep into singularity concepts.

“Boulevard” Review

Boulevard: Directed by Dito Montiel. With Robin Williams, Kathy Baker, Roberto Aguire, Giles Matthey. A devoted husband in a marriage of convenience is forced to confront his secret life.

One of Robin’s last films and it’s one of his most emotionally charged and interesting films in a career of emotionally charged and interesting movies. I have a couple quibbles about extremely minor things, like how the husband makes the terrible choice to start to trust his new friend in ways that I wouldn’t trust my best friends, but considering the emotional situation he was in, it does make a twisted sort of sense.

This is the final film in my Robin Williams watch and it’s a great one to go out on. I’ve now officially watched every film of his that’s been publicly released, I’m sure there’s plenty of TV or comedy specials that I haven’t seen, but I’ll catch those as they float up into the zeitgeist.

“CAPES: RISING TIDES” Review

Rising Tides is the story of a new hero, Killjoy. The triggering event that makes him a breakthrough happens during the Chicago Attack that opened Repercussions and the reader gets a street-level view of the attack and its aftermath. Killjoy is not your typical superhero; his breakthrough power is teleportation, jumping, and Kingston James Parks, has zero interest in becoming a cape. He’s on the short and slight side, not a physically brave person, and his primary goal, initially, is to find a decent-paying job (not using his power) and . . . that’s really about it. Especially since his best friend since college and current housemate is a Firster. That’s right, his bestie is a member of Humanity First, the anti-superhuman group. She’s also a photojournalist who makes a career of photographing the aftermath of superhuman battles (events keep her busy).

This is the first in a new series set in the same universe as the “Wearing The Cape” series that I blew through all ten of in about a month. Luckily for my wallet, they’re all on Kindle Unlimited, so there’s an amazingly cheap barrier to entry to this story. There’s no real need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one, but they’re so good I’d still recommend reading them either before or after this one. The author Marion Harmon has mentioned that his goal was to write a story that didn’t have the usual tropes of superheroes with dead parents or girlfriends being the sole motivators and for the most part he’s accomplished that goal, there’s a fair bit of damsel in distress parts in the final chapter or two, but they work out well enough that it’s less of a crutch and more of a story element that works out.

The main character here, eyerollingly named Killjoy, has the same basic power set as the jumpers from the Jumper movie and book series and Harmon explores the different types of Jumpers in this universe and how Killjoy’s specific implementation of the power set is augmented by some in-universe familiar character types that all make sense.

If you’re a fan of superhero stories, this is good one to read, and if you want to read something from the best writers in the genre, this is where you should start. Or with “Wearing The Cape”, both are fantastic first entries.

“Archer” Review

Archer: Created by Adam Reed. With H. Jon Benjamin, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Chris Parnell. Covert black ops and espionage take a back seat to zany personalities and relationships between secret agents and drones.

I gave up on this show when they started straying from the spy agency concept and it was all dream state illusions that had no impact or made any sense within the world that they had previously created and I completely missed it when they brought it all back to the basic formula that worked so well. I’ve finally caught up with the series and I’m happy to say that the final couple seasons were fantastic and built to a lovely ending that wrapped up all sorts of fun story threads.

A story about a corporation and a doctor (John Malkovich) that oversees the process of reincarnation, and a young man (Thomas Mann) who becomes a glitch in the system when he encounters a woman (Rosa Salazar) he loved in a previous life.

I thought this was a completely different film when I started streaming it, realized my error about 2 minutes in but decided to let it ride and boy what a ride it was. Going in blind really helped keep me on my toes and that’s how I would suggest watching it.

My local AMC had this back in theater for the 45th anniversary and as I wasn’t even alive yet when it was originally in theaters I figured I’d give it a go and while I’ve seen the movie about 20 times, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I always forget how many times the dang cat almost get eaten or is used as bait by either the xenomorph or by the crew. Something that was super interesting was that before the film started there was a brief interview of director Ridley Scott by director Fede Alvarez who has directed the most recent entry in the franchise named “Alien: Romulus”. It could have been longer and it would have been nicer to have some real background about the original film, but I’ll take what I can get.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: Directed by Guy Ritchie. With Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Eiza González. The British military recruits a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II.

I generally find Guy Ritchie’s films to be entertaining but slightly underwhelming, and while there’s moments that this movie edges up to being a parody of itself, it never goes over the line and ended up being a pretty good story with captivating action and acting. It’s good to see Alan Richardson joining stars like Henry Cavill, Eiza Gonzalez, and Babs Olusanmokun, he’s still fresh off the success of the Reacher series and Titans prior to that, so I’m hopeful that he’s going to have a great career over the next 30 years.
