The author of this passed back in November of 2022 and at the time I think I had read one or two of his books previously, but there were a whole truck load of people saying that this was one of his best works, which I’m not sure I entirely agree with. The concept is absolutely bonkers and super interesting, but the implementation of it feels like an undercooked pizza that would have been delicious if it was given just 10 more minutes in the oven. The story is richly written with exciting elements that keep hitting new highs time after time, then it just sorta peters out and gives a unsatisfying ending.

Top 5 Movies That Perfectly Capture the College Student Experience
Photo by Vlada Karpovich on Pexels
College life is a unique stage that provides opportunities, challenges, and opportunities for self-discovery along with an emotional roller coaster. From memorable parties to late-night study sessions, college experiences frequently have an impact on students’ lives for the rest of their lives. Films do a particularly good job of capturing these various aspects of college life, which can also evoke nostalgia or a sense of identification with the characters and situations. Keep reading to learn about five movies that have successfully captured the experience of being a college student while still appealing to a global audience.
-
“Animal House” (1978)
The wild and carefree college experience is perfectly captured in the classic comedy “Animal House.” The early 1960s are the setting for this John Landis film, which follows the misadventures of a bunch of oddball fraternity brothers at Faber College.
With characters like Bluto (John Belushi) and the charismatic but impulsive Otter (Tim Matheson), “Animal House” exemplifies the sense of camaraderie and rebellion that frequently characterizes college life. Despite the exaggerated and chaotic scenes, the movie is successful in capturing the spirit of youthful exuberance and the desire to rebel against authority during this transformative stage of life. Hire the best academized writers to get your college assignments done while enjoying your favorite movies.
-
“Good Will Hunting” (1997)
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are the directors and writers of the gripping drama “Good Will Hunting,” which follows the struggles of a young janitor and undiscovered genius named Will Hunting (Matt Damon). This film is set at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). With the help of his therapist, Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), Will embarks on a journey of self-realization in the movie, which explores themes of identity, personal development, and the importance of intellectual curiosity.
-
“The Social Network” (2010)
David Fincher’s gripping biographical drama “The Social Network,” starring Jesse Eisenberg, charts the rise of Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg. The movie provides an intriguing look into the entrepreneurial spirit that frequently inspires college students. In order to reflect the competitive environment that can exist in a college setting, the movie explores the complexities of friendships, betrayals, and the competitive business world. To enjoy the movie, make sure you find the best writers to hire to complete your assignments on time and with flying colors.
-
“Dead Poets Society” (1989)
Peter Weir’s moving and thought-provoking film “Dead Poets Society” is set in a traditional prep school exclusively for boys. English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams) inspires his students to embrace their individuality and pursue their passions through poetry and literature. The film deftly captures the influence a committed teacher can have on students’ lives. In “Dead Poets Society,” which emphasizes the value of challenging the status quo, developing critical thinking skills, and forming meaningful connections, the college experience is reflected.
-
“Superbad” (2007)
Greg Mottola, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg’s raunchy coming-of-age comedy “Superbad” hilariously capture the essence of friendship and the insecurities of adolescence. In the film, best friends Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are seen attempting to partake in a legendary party before splitting up for college. In their final weeks of high school, they set out on a wild adventure. The movie does a good job of capturing the excitement and worries that college-bound students frequently experience as they make the transition into adulthood, despite the fact that the story takes place in high school.
Bottom Line
Being a college student is an up-and-down, successful, and unsuccessful journey. These five movies—”Animal House,” “Good Will Hunting,” “The Social Network,” “Dead Poets Society,” and “Superbad”—each presents a unique perspective on a different aspect of college life. The essence of what it means to be a college student is expertly captured in these films, from wild parties and rebellious adventures to profound introspection and personal growth.

I picked this up at a recent comic book convention based on a some of the promo art that was at the author’s table. I was able to get the book and a art card signed by him and his producer, which the card is going to live in the front of a portfolio that I’m using to transport comics (when I buy them), but the book is likely going to go into my resell pile. It’s definitely not bad and I enjoyed the story but there’s far less spaceships that I was hoping for and the art and plot worked well enough to service the story, but the re-readability is limited for me.
It’d be worth your time to read, maybe not so much to buy a full TPB of the story, but if you see it at a library or have a buddy to share it with, go for it!

I bought this under the assumption that the marketing material that mentioned this young girl lived with a cult that fully believed the happenings of Star Trek had actually happened in some way meant that Trek was going to be more than just a one panel side comment. It’s a great book though and tells a great story, just not as related to Trek as I was hoping for.
Bonus points for having a glow in the dark cover!

I found this brand new at Best Buy for just $4, so I figured it was time to add the blu-ray to my collection. I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve owned it, and other than a commemorative laserdisc I have up on a shelf, it doesn’t look like I’ve owned a watchable copy before. Sure I have it on digital, but do you ever actually really own any of that digital stuff?
The film still holds up of course, it’s still a product of it’s time, with stars that were firmly entrenched in the Disney machine, but it has some pretty solid concepts that would show up in hundreds of films after, including just a single sequel decades later. There’s a ton of behind the scenes stuff that goes into the making of the film that’s super interesting and is as interesting as the movie itself.

The Establishment of a MCS Legal Fund needs your help!
Back in January of 2023 MCS’s registered DMCA agent received an email from an attorney trying to get us to disclose our insurance police information to them, which felt like a new attempt at a scam or spear phishing attack, but like all messages sent to the DMCA agent, it was treated as a legitimate DMCA take down notice, and the content was removed within a few hours of the report. The requesting attorney was informed of this, but they chose to ignore the emails we sent back to them, then opened another email thread with another attorney or paralegal (they were never very clear on who exactly they were), and the end of that conversation lead me to believe that they were well aware of our nature as a community of bloggers / image enthusiastic weirdos.
Then in June MCS’s parent company was served with a lawsuit saying that we’d essentially time traveled to 2014 when an image was copywritten, then intentionally posted that copyrighted image in 2012, and went out of our way to strip the image of all the copyright information from the image. They didn’t mention that during those time travel shenanigans that someone had added words to the images that said “coat hangers really bring out the child in you” and “the joke is abortion”, an obviously crass and low brow attempt at humor, something that we here at MCS excel at.
