  • “Blue Beetle” Review

An alien scarab chooses college graduate Jaime Reyes to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the teenager with a suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.

Introducing a new superhero in a universe that’s quickly on the decline and in the process of being rebooted is an exceptionally brave step to take and I’m pleased to report that Blue Beetle stuck the landing, largely by eschewing major common elements of other comic book films. Sure there’s a hero learning his place in the world, true there’s a hyper focus on “family”, and true there’s a beautiful woman to save, but that’s not what I’m referring to. There’s no call backs to movies that were released 10 years ago, there’s no guest appearances of super heroes that were hinted at in 5 other films, there’s no world ending stakes (not yet!), and there’s no one talking about joining the Avengers or Justice League in the after credits (but there is a pretty cool after credit scene, so stick around!). The acting and script was fantastic, but I do have one complaint in that whoever did the subtitles missed about half the opportunities they should have taken to put English subtitles over Spanish speaking, because half the time people were talking I had no clue what they were actually saying and what I know of Spanish wasn’t exactly lining up with what I was reading in English.

If you’re able to see it in Dolby Digital or IMAX, that’s the route I would take.
