    Batman Begins

Directed by Christopher Nolan. With Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Liam Neeson. After training with his mentor, Batman begins his fight to free crime-ridden Gotham City from corruption.

I already owned the blue ray, but though that since I enjoyed the 90s batfilms so much in UHD, surely Batman Begins in 4k would be amazing too, right?

meh. visually it’s just ‘ok’. The story is still fantastic and I love nearly everything about it. Makes me with that Nolan would get back to making normal movies like this instead of his high concept weirdo movies that he’s been doing lately.

    Batman & Robin

Directed by Joel Schumacher. With Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Clooney, Chris O’Donnell, Uma Thurman. Batman and Robin try to keep their relationship together even as they must stop Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from freezing Gotham City.

This is sadly where the franchise officially jumps the shark but includes some of the best one liners from comic movies, even to this day, most of them by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr Freeze:

“My heart has grown cold to your pleas of mercy.”
    “the iceman cometh!”
“What killed the dinosaurs? the ice age!”
batman & robin on ice skates with hokey sticks
batman & robin surfing on rocket doors
oh right, mr freeze had a rocket for some reason
    robin saying “cowabunga”
    “stay cool bird boy”
bane is just a science experiment instead of a tactical genius?
pretty sure that mad scientist is lionel luthor
only way to be sexy in the bat universe is to die (catwoman / poison ivy)
bane as driver of car (driving ms ivy instead of driving mr daisy?)
batman forever card, never leave home without it, which is a dated reference to a credit card
rubber lips are immune to your charms!

Sadly, as a follow up and ultimately final movie in the franchise, it wasn’t what fans of the prior three films were looking for and didn’t treat the source material with much respect. However, if you were to watch Batman ’66, then watch Batman & Robin, you’d have a perfect set of two movies that feel connected and work pretty well.

    Batman Forever

Directed by Joel Schumacher. With Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman. Batman must battle former district attorney Harvey Dent, who is now Two-Face and Edward Nygma, The Riddler with help from an amorous psychologist and a young circus acrobat who becomes his sidekick, Robin.

The shift of tone from Tim Burton’s Batman to Joel Schumacher’s Batman was intense, but for the most part this movie worked, and worked well in 4k/hdr with all the neon lights and massive cityscapes really popping and catching my eye. The story is still silly and at times takes itself too seriously, but I still remember seeing the film in theaters and enjoying it as much as I enjoyed it this last weekend.

    Batman Returns

Directed by Tim Burton. With Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken. While Batman deals with a deformed man calling himself the Penguin wreaking havoc across Gotham with the help of a cruel businessman, a female employee of the latter becomes the Catwoman with her own vendetta.

Another amazing 4k transfer, I had forgotten how absolutely disgusting Danny DeVito’s Penguin was, and how over the top sexual Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman ended up being. The story might have used some polishing, but I think the end result still stands the test of time.

    Batman

Directed by Tim Burton. With Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl. The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being Jack Napier, a criminal who becomes the clownishly homicidal Joker.

I believe this was my first time watching in 4k, and boy howdy what a wonderful 4k transfer this is, for better or worse. All the practical shots and stuff in the dark really benefited from the higher resolution and HDR, but the miniatures and animated (yes animated) sections were obvious and felt roughly out of place.

The film itself still has a warm place in my heart, it was one of the first comic book movies that tried to take itself seriously and spawned an entire genre that’s still going strongly today.
