Definitely done on purpose - the only way a tree like that would fall the opposite way from the side you were cutting it on is if you cut a wedge out of the opposite side first. If you look at the last 2 pictures you can see this is exactly the case, as the tree has been cut through on the back side as well. If the tree was just cut through from the front and fell, at least one half of the stump would look like splintered wood, from where it broke as it fell.
