  • Comment on Angry "mob" (2009-08-15 22:25:09)
Deuce wasn't calling Obama a "darkie"—he was using ironic rhetoric, mimicking the kind you'd get from these old, FOX-loving mobs...and yes, they are a mob, if they attend these events to start trouble instead of asking relevant questions. "Are you going to form death panels" is so irrelevant that it's laughable, *unless* you do think we live in Stalinist Russia, but surely these mobs have more faith in America than that. Personally, I don't give a flying fuck if they only take four months to decide on health care—no system is going to be perfect, at first; if we were to wait for a perfect system, we'd wait for ever, and I'd rather have a somewhat good system implemented, and let them work the bugs out afterwards, which is usually how most government actions work. Even the Constitution itself has been amended 27 times. Imagine if we'd waited until it was "perfect" to adopt our founding document. Fuck that—and by the way, "evidence to the contrary" is soundly ignored by the Right, which was deuce's point, so asking him for some wouldn't make a bit of difference, would it?

Agreed. Jennifer Connelly never looks back, even when she's playing a coked-out whore in Requiem for a Dream.

I wouldn't call Courtney Love a celebrity anymore; she's known, but hardly famous. Now she exists like Nicole Ritchie exists—only there because now and then someone puts a camera on her, but it's not like anyone's clamoring for more Courtney Love.

Rare is not the same as raw. Rare means lightly cooked. Raw means uncooked. The meat show is very rare, but not raw.

There were recent reprints (maybe around 2002, 2003) but the comics were published in the States in the mid 80s by First Comics, with introductions and covers by Frank Miller for the first year, then Bill Sienkiewicz for the second, and I forget who did them after that. Not much in the way of dialogue, but the comics were incredible. I just saw the first film recently. Not bad, but I prefer the comics.
  • Comment on How Midwesterners see the U.S. (2009-07-08 21:30:00)
Obama took Ohio, but it's too bad we elected Boehner as well because it *does* make us look like right-wingers. Ohio's actually a pretty good mix. But that's because we're the most normal state in the Union. On the whole, though, I do see the US this way. I won't deny it. I'm glad for the left-wing loonies balancing out the right-wing loonies who need to change the channel from FOX News now and then, I hope the Eskimoes need to keep supplying us with ice, and I think the Hula girls have nice coconuts.
  • Comment on Johnny Depp Mad Hatter (2009-07-08 21:25:41)
Burton will fuck it up, like he fucks up most of his movies—Batman and Batman Returns were utterly ridiculous and so not Batman; Planet of the Apes was complete trash; and CATCF was some overhyped emo film for adults. He'll make it about his own style instead of figuring out what the story needs to communicate. Guarantee this will be another emo kid flick, the Mad Hatter won't be mad, he'll be warped, and the film will be hellish instead of fantastic. Obviously I've got a burr up my ass about Tim Burton films, but he's let me down one too many times. It does have Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, though.

It's true, you do have to work your ass off to get to that point, but once there, it's as I described. We do get summers off, winter holidays, and weekends off—also most Fridays. If you don't know any professors who are working less than 72 hours a week, then either you don't know enough of them, or the ones you do know are doing it wrong. One of my professors when I entered my Ph.D. program showed up at the office twice a week, taught two classes, had office hours, and went home. He wrote and published in his spare time because he loved to, not because he had to. He had TAs to do his grading, assistants to help with the office work, and a clause in his contract that this schedule would never change. Getting to tenure? It takes work. Once you've got it? All downhill. For me, it is a wonderland. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be doing it. Most of the stress is mental, but I'm certainly not out there busting my hump like my dad did, in the factory day in and day out for 42 years. And again, I'm speaking to a particularly point: it's definitely not a "go nowhere" job. If you want to debate particulars, fine, but don't lose sight that, hard work or no, academia is certainly not a field without its merits—which was point here. Also, your numbers are wrong in that you claim that there are 200 applicants for every job, leaving 199 without work. Those 200 are applying for more than one job; job apps aren't parsed, 200 applicants per position. So if there are 25 openings, there may be 200 applicants rather than 5000 (25 x 200), so when those positions are filled there would be 175, not 4975, people without employment. And that's not to say that everyone with a Ph.D. ends up teaching—editing, writing, consulting, &c., all pay well. So, sorry to disappoint (?) you, but my friend is certainly not imaginary, and neither am I. Although as far as that goes, most of my friends are in academia, and I've only provided one example where I could have given dozens.

Spoken like true ignoramuses. A friend of mine has a Ph.D. in the fine arts; her fee to read poems is $10,000 a pop, and when she travels, her uni gives her an expense account, in addition to job security and a hefty paycheck. Mine (not fine arts) is a similar track...and in addition to the above, we get summers off and a month during the winter holidays, plus spring break and no weekends ever, and most Fridays off, and I've never worked an actual 8 hour day since I've been in the profession. Oh...almost forgot. You get published, you make a name for yourself, you get paid more. Doesn't sound like "nowhere" to me.

Good film for its time. And -100? Really? Reeaaalllly? Had I known, I wouldn't have watched this film way back before most people had internet access.
