I've had at least 3 near death experiences outside of wildland firefighting, and several with wildland firefighting. None of those times have did I suddenly go, "Oh, deities exist. My bad." Mostly I thought about getting my squad out alive. Most of the other experiences happened so fast I didn't have time to think, or I woke up in an ambulance. (That's always fun). Maybe it's different in a fox hole. I somehow doubt it.

As someone who now pays mandatory health insurance in Switzerland... it's not a big difference. In fact, the only time I notice it is when I get a hospital bill, when it's freaking cheap compared to what I was paying in the U.S. The unemployment rate here is also only 4%, even with the economic downturn, so it's not like it's going to bomb the economy. Whatever. People deserve their ignorance and fear-mongering if they listen/watch Fox News.
