[How come I can't reply to anadin directly?] Much of what you say is true, but I disagree with the conclusion that logic is an inappropriate framework with which to interpret the world. It depends at which level of abstraction you choose to study it. If it wasn't the case that, for example, speed=distance/time or potential difference=current*resistance, we would never have the ability to achieve the incredibly precise engineering that we use every day. The fact is that there IS huge amounts of logic behind the way the world works, and just because we don't fully understand everything (such as quantum mechanics, or the origins of matter) it doesn't mean that logic has no real use. Formal mathematics and logic are an excellent framework to use in the majority of science.

Kinda agree with casemods. But downvoted him anyway - Comment on sexy iso (2011-05-11 22:27:42)
Repost. Beautiful, beautiful repost. - Comment on how to out science a christian (2011-05-11 22:26:53)
Of course, if we are being *really* scientific, 666 probably *isn't* the number of the beast... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_Beast - Comment on Showing Some Love (2011-05-05 01:34:44)
No, there's logic there. In addition, HIV infection is more likely to occur from anal sex because you are far more likely to cause even a minute amount of bleeding, which increases likelihood of transmission. And I don't think it's unreasonable to hypothesize that gay males have more anal sex than straight couples. - Comment on Quick Translation Guide (2011-04-19 16:37:31)

I wish these were true. The author has to be American, they have clearly gathered a malformed an image of what a "typical" cockney sounds like from TV when making up some of these. I will however adopt the phrase "Cold on a Cob" from now on. (The common British term is "icy lolly" btw.) - Comment on SlutWalk Toronto 2011 (2011-04-18 19:48:28)
You make a good point about a personal responsibility, but I think it's still important not to suggest any kind of blame (I know you weren't saying that, I just want to affirm the point). After all, there are people in the world who would claim that it is a girls "fault" if she is raped when dressed in a provocative manner - especially in countries such as the Yemen and Saudi Arabia, but all over the world as well - which almost gives a guy a 'Get out of jail free card'. We should always advise precaution but when a crime is committed, the responsibility is still 100% in the hands of the criminal. - Comment on Tsunami-surviving dog rescued after three weeks at sea (2011-04-18 11:52:00)

Last time I fingered a minor I just got sore. Although, I was doing plenty of pulling off whilst finger picking. In the kid's anus. - Comment on System of a Down (2011-04-04 08:11:23)
Riiiiight, so clearly you consider a pineapple to be more 'genetically superior' to everyone on the planet... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_organisms_by_chromosome_count I seriously hope it was an attempt at a joke. Otherwise, stop making up science to attempt to prove a point. - Comment on Movie Titles (2011-03-24 08:27:14)
I was thinking Cross of Iron for 5 given it specifically uses a cross product... Although that movie doesn't really fit the style/timeframe of the others so I guess it could be Iron Man. No idea about 3. - Comment on Logic (2011-03-21 07:41:42)
Ha, fair point. [Disclaimer: I'm not an expert...] But child sex abuse has been known to cause psychological and sexual instability, and can have an influence on their sexuality with higher incidences of chronic or inappropriate sexual behaviour and less common (though obviously not uncommon) sexual orientation, such as homosexuality. I know, the point is rather contentious but I wanted to find an co-example to illustrate the fact that our psychological make-up, including sexuality, is a deep and complex thing, governed by unfathomable numbers of environmental and genetic factors. My point being that I don't think it's really fair to give such a black-and-white comparison of homosexuality and religious faith; we can't really say that either are *really* well enough understood to be just GENETICS and CHOICE. Well, it's religious faith in particular that I was arguing about but somehow seem to have focussed more on my tiny example of sexuality not necessarily being 100% genetic, and now it probably looks like I'm about to tell all the gays they can stop thinking gay thoughts. Which I'm really not. - Comment on God Bless America (2011-03-20 19:31:42)
It's the one saying "those idiots started world war 2" that really gets me. I seriously hope that these posts don't reflect any more than a minority of Americans... but it really reinforces the way the rest of the world stereotype the USA.
