Only during the Hajj. At other times of the year, you can take a tour and even look at the stone. Some trivia: This isn't the only Kaaba sanctuary. It's only significance is due to Muhammed once being a resident of the city. The buildings and holy areas (the satan pole as well) are maintained by the bin Ladin family's construction company. The black stone may be a meteorite or compressed onyx. Other Kaaba's had stones (even of other colors) as well. Though Muslims have adopted the Kaaba, it's origins are actually found in Zoroastrianism, like many tenets of the Jewish religion.
