The new plot centers around global warming. Basically, Klaatu warns the people of earth that if we don't stop destroying our planet, Gort will destroy our planet. This one will tank just like Hitchhiker's Guide and I Robot.
  • Comment on The Counties of Texas (2008-02-19 21:24:45)
The counties with a point to each compass point were surveyed when Texas were part of Spain. Spanish surveyors were trained to use the compass points to lay out a county. Those with flat sides to the compass points were surveyed by those trained in the U.S. or Britain.

This is a truly classic series of books and they are King's masterwork. Contrary to an earlier comment, the books aren't a loop. They're a spiral. Read the first and last books carefully and you'll see why.
  • Comment on Acoustic Coupler (2008-01-30 22:02:30)
Just as a point of interest, at one time it was illegal to use an acoustic coupler that you didn't rent from the phone company. The phone company would diconnect your phone if they caught you using one. They even put ads in the paper claiming it would endanger live by interfering with airport radar. Look up the Carterfone Decision for more information.

I still have my auto-answer acoustic coupler stashed in the closet. I'll take a picture and submit it this weekend.
  • Comment on 1981 Osborne "Portable" (2007-12-31 16:47:52)
I remember it well. The boss took his "portable" (His was a Compaq) on a business trip. It became my responsibility to maneuver it (and all of the luggage) through the Atlanta airport. The cart hit a gap in the concrete and his portable hit the ground. It survived, but he lugged it home.

Mine takes (not took, I still have it and play Choplifter once in a while) six batteries. It's the U.S. version.
  • Comment on Colt from the cartoons.....real though. (2007-10-19 10:21:08)
That's a simple 45 caliber colt. The long barrel makes it kick less since more powder has time to burn before the lead leaves the barrel and the extra weight of the barrel adds more mass to the weapon. The longer barrel also makes it more accurate since the sight radius (the distance between the front and rear sight) is longer. A weapon with a 2 inch barrel and a 12 inch barrel are equally accurate. The human firing them is the weakness. It's easier to keep the weapon on target if you have a long sight radius. The bullets aren't blanks, they're wadcutters. Wadcutter ammunition is a flat front bullet that fits entirely within the brass. It's mainly used for target shooting since it cuts a clean hole in a piece of paper.
