Yeah! Those damn democrats that controlled both houses of Congress and the presidency during the entire Iraq War didn't vote to fund it properly! Oh wait... By the way, we won the war years ago. Now we're trying to win the occupation, whatever that means.
  • Comment on High Cost Of Force Protection (2008-02-24 13:25:00)
I'm told that one of the main reasons that the kill-to-wounded ratio has improved is that every soldier now gets basic first aid training, including preventing wounded soldiers from bleeding out. The training and first aid kits for every soldier has done much more than any body armor or other equipment to keep the wounded fellows alive until they get to a real medic.
  • Comment on UPS Trademarks "the color brown" (2008-02-19 13:25:47)
Plus, the trademark only applies for advertising or packaging related to delivery services. You can't open "Tiki's Package Delivery Service" and paint your trucks that particular shade of brown. However, you can open "Tiki's House Painting Company" and specialize in painting houses that shade of brown, because that business wouldn't confuse customers of UPS. In fact, you could then apply for a trademark on that same shade of brown for house painting and probably get it. (Too serious... I prefer photos of topless, lovely, young women of any particular shade you like...) This comment was brought to you today by the color brown...

@natedog : 2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of two. Perhaps you need a bigger pair?

  • Comment on Acoustic Coupler (2008-01-30 19:55:30)
Yes, gpat, come of us used them. The 10 character-per-second acoustic coupler I had on a teletype was a joy because I could store data in a remote computer system rather than on rolls of 7-bit punch tape. (Early 1970's - long rolls of yellow, one-inch wide paper with ASCII coded 7-bit characters, one per line.) On a side note, if you had a fairly good sense of pitch, you could whistle into an acoustic coupler and make characters type on the teletype. It was a delightfully geeky party trick... 8)

Natedog: Semantics. 1500 BC (about 3500 years ago) is when the Greek city-states were large and powerful. I could be wrong, but I believe the Romans followed the Greeks, adopting their Gods and Goddesses. Of course, they devoured other cultures as well. OmfgWtfZergd: Greece was inhabited 8,000 years ago - there are villages from that time period. Turkey had villages 12,000 years ago. So I suppose it depends on what you mean by 'civilization'. Part of the problem is that there are so few intact sites - people tend to build on the ruins of older groups because those were the good spots to build in the first place. LordPartyTime: My reference is seven PAIRS of each clean animal, not just seven - makes more sense that way... 8)

OmfgWtfZergd: "Human history starts at about 8,000 years ago." Except for the villages from about 12,000 years ago found in Turkey and the 'Aphrodite' fertility sculptures from about 28,000 years ago, of course... 8) Cuniform writing has been found dating from about 5,000 years ago. Are you refering to the foundation of Greece about 8,000 years ago as the beginning of human history?

No Alfred? At least Cassandra (BatGirl) is there - she sort of got dropped for awhile... Apparently, BatWoman isn't part of the family... :(
