But wasn't the movie version of Sauron based on Alan Lee's (and others?) illustrations of Sauron from the books... that is to say, those illustrations were around in the 60s or 70s (not sure) and became the classic look of LOTR that all the people who read to books came to know, which is why Peter Jackson hired the famous illustrators to design the look of the movies. So the question has changed... was there a version of Sauron in the books that inspired the look of the movie... and also the Lich King?

@Kishi: yes. you're right. why should i hide behind false pretenses of not wanting to tread on toes. @all you motherfuckers out there: your dogshit comics and sunday strips pale in comparison.

I'm not saying that Calvin and Hobbes is better than any other comic-strip... but it has had the biggest impact on my life. I read Calvin and Hobbes before I could read. The art was quite captivating; not many sunday strips had art that was so stimulating and so appealing. Plenty of other comic-strips have been good... but Calvin and Hobbes made me want to be an artist, as Bill Watterson wasn't merely a caroonist... he was one of the most brilliant artists of our time.

NCC-1701-D is my favorite Enterprise, besides the revamped Wrath of Kahn Enterprise

This statue was erected in Sarasota, Florida... right down the road from where I graduated. Its pretty dumb. We all rushed to get our pictures taken with an upskirt shot.

some mysterious stranger earned some karma points for that one. My high school biology teacher had a whole garden in the back of his room, and told us the story of how he noticed a little plant growing that didn't belong with the rest of the plants. He waited to find out who had the balls to sneak in a pot plant in a teacher's garden and come back to harvest it, but no one showed. At this point, his story trailed off, and I can only assume it was because he didn't want to answer what he did with the plant. I say he smoked it.

Condolences. Many people don't understand what it's like to loose a pet that is more of a best friend than a pet. Lost my two goldens this year, so I feel for you.

Paul has it right pretty much, though I'd also give Alan Moore credit for taking the characters beyond their inspirations. Dr. Manhattan is much more of a living god than The Atom, because people really wouldnt be affraid of The Atom, even if he was the first super powered human to show up. In many ways, the book is about the implications of the first real superhero showing up in history.
