For example: If you drive 13,200 miles/year and get 44 average mpg in a Prius (easy to do without changing how you drive) you will burn 300 gallons/year. If your other car had 22 mpg you'd burn double that so the savings are roughly 300galx$3.75/gal = $1,125/year. Or roughly $90/month, or $10K over 8 years/106K miles, going up with gas prices - substantial but not awe inspiring. If overall price is your main concern you might be better in a Yaris, they have good mileage and retail about $9K cheaper.
