Sweetgum seed pod, Also known as Liquidambar. Similar in many ways to a maple, but from a different genus. - Comment on The Three Musketeers 2011 (2011-01-25 17:56:48)
In around the 17th century, guns started replacing bow/arrow and crossbow infantry as the basic troop on the field for range, and started to overtake pikemen in the 18th. Essentially, a Musketeer (Fusalier, pistoleer, whatever) was a rank-and-file infantryman in the standing army, would fight in ranked formation giving out volleys of fire. Dumas's musketeers are out-of-service cos the king/prince whatever decided to suspend all the loyal officers (which they were) due to his wanting to do naughties. Hence, they're now being bodyguards, where a 17th/c musket would be useless. Therefore, swords. - Comment on F You, England (2010-03-09 04:58:33)
Cricket comes from an old Middle-Dutch word, actually. Not english at all, except by derivation. - Comment on Kandinskery (2010-02-03 05:28:59)
"That's not plumbing, it's just a toilet." Even though your opinion is that the object in question is mostly to do with shit, it doesn't change the fact that it is, in fact, a piece of plumbing. Or, to resolve my impromptu metaphor that was mostly just an excuse to say shit on the internet, in this case, a work of art. Kandinsky can be understood in cultural terms as a product of a cohesive, coherent and semi-linear development of artistic thought. His concept is his art, and his art is a way of looking at the world and the structures that control it. ... TL;DR - PFFFFT. - Comment on Pedo-Win! (2010-01-28 03:42:58)

I actually find her quite cute! Kinda young-Jennifer-Aniston-y. I do like the tomboys though. - Comment on Bar Wallpaper (2009-12-23 18:51:47)
It is, however, a particularly well-stocked bar for cocktails, which it would pretty obviously assembled for (if it existed). What it lacks in aged single malts, it makes up for in versatility! Gimme some fruit, sugar syrup, Post-mix and garnish, and I could do wonderful things with that. - Comment on Wedge-Tailed Eagle (2009-12-19 21:52:14)
More of them die by Roadkill than by any other means. They tend to land to eat the kangaroos and wallabies that get hit by heavy trucks in the middle of the road and simply can't get back in to the air in time to get out of the way of the next one. The things take a good 30 seconds to get into the air! Heavy beasties. - Comment on Darwinian Graffiti (2009-12-14 20:08:36)
Prato it is, I can confirm it! Went and saw this while I was there in '07. Just on the main road by the river as you go out of the north gate of the old town. :) Good Hunting Die. - Comment on Even dirt can be beautiful. (2009-11-28 05:24:00)

We pronounce the L in solder too. Then again, I live in Australia, where people speak English slightly worse than the English, but at least take a crack at most of the letters in a given word. - Comment on beauty in orange (2009-11-13 22:43:44)
