It is not a law, it is a custom, and it varies from different parts of the country. In Illinois where I was educated in the public education system (the god fearing bible belt area) we were told to cover our heart for the pledge (which is similar when making oaths of other type when there isn't a religious document around) and stand at attention, salute if you're in uniform, or remove your hat if you're wearing one during the playing of the national anthem. If you dont beleive that its not ok to observe the national anthem of the United State of America without a hat over your heart just watch a choir sing it, no hands over hearts. - Comment on Super Collider (2008-01-24 10:12:59)
