It is starting to become more acceptable usage (because of de facto usage) to use apostrophes to denote plural letters.
What would you suggest as an alternative?
Saying “as and ms” looks like an error. “As” is a word and “ms” just looks like a typo, or at least something that should be capitalized (first letter or both).
Perhaps if you quoted the letters? Like so:

Actually, “A”s and “M”s is the accepted standard for dealing with such things. “A”s and “M”s aren’t words in the strictest sense, they’re letters, and when dealing with non-words, it is accepted practice to put them in quotation marks, with the plural “S” on the outside, since letters don’t have a plural form in written English. Also, “As” and “Ms” are already taken as a word and an abbreviation, respectively.
That is a perfectly acceptable use of apostrophes, pedant.
