I would like to start filing complaints and possibly even charging the people who put up these distracting billboards (and all roadside billboards in fact) as being a cause of accidents. I think they could be charged with stunting actually, since they are distracting drivers from the road.
Hardly. There’s a huge difference between little signs that warn and inform of upcoming conditions and signs that are way bigger and are designed to demand attention.
Perhaps they are not a real distraction to you or I, but they are a problem that is fuckin stupid because so many drivers are fuckin stupid and they are distractions to them.
They annoy me as just being more litter and pollution in the psychic landscape of our day to day lives. I think all road side advertising of any kind should be illegal.
If someone is dumb enough to stare at a sign long enough to lose control of their car chances are it was going to happen anyway. Vehicular Darwinism.
Plus people are more likely to hold their attention on a road conditions sign than a billboard. Average time your eyes rest on any ad is 3 seconds max. Thats a fact.
3 seconds is a long ass-time when moving at or over 80km/h (50mph to my yankee brethren)
I don’t think the issue is losing control, but not seeing the prick ahead suddenly change lanes without signaling because you’re reading the block of clever text at the side of the road.
…traffic signs are designed to demand attention. If someone seriously is so severely ADD that they can’t pay attention to the traffic with billboards around or they’re driving so dangerously that a glance at one is going to be such a problem, they shouldn’t be behind the wheel in the first place.
The reality of it is that billboards are -not- a hazard. There is absolutely ZERO evidence to support that they are. Statistically, there is no difference in traffic accidents between areas where they are illegal and where they are allowed.
Billboards don’t bother me, it’s the fucking crosses and miniature shrines people stick on the side of the road when someone dies there. They’re distracting as hell.
I don’t agree that they’re distracting, but they are stupid. Some of those are better tended than the person’s actual grave. There’s one on I-40 between Memphis and Nashville that’s a good example of that. It’s been there for years.
The person is dead. Get on with your life. Mourn at their grave. Putting up a giant wooden cross by the road isn’t going to prevent others from having accidents.
In Minnesota, who is probably not the first state to have this…there are electronic billboards that have very BRIGHT and FLASHING advertisements. In the town that I’m from, the first month they put one of them up, next to a high school, there were 7 reported accidents, because the fucker was flashing like a bug light, which enticed so many youngsters do their doom.
first of all its great to see a fellow minnesotan i know those fucking signs and 2nd of all every time you argue on the internet you lose a centimeter of your dick some of us are little girls now
Throw me in the “ADD people shouldn’t drive” pile. Most of us can glance at signs without losing focus on our main objectives. I think the billboard is funny in a perverse way, like the blurry Guiness cans/glasses warning against drunk driving.
Too many people have been coddled in a society which alters to suit them. Life does not cater to egocentrics, so get over yourselves.

lol really?
cause that’s fuckin stupid.
Ever seen a road sign that tells you traffic conditions ahead? No more of a distraction than a billboard.
What about a sign that tells you the speed limit? How about directions to the next rest stop?
ya so anyway..sick ass billboard niga

They should just have a # you can text to get upcoming road conditions. 🙂
I have an app on my phone that does that. Also tells me about speed traps and radar.

I think the real solution is banning fucking stupid drivers.
hear hear.

all i think of when I see the crosses is one going through my window and impaling me in my chest.
ouch.

In Soviet Russia, Billboard watches YOU!
first of all its great to see a fellow minnesotan i know those fucking signs and 2nd of all every time you argue on the internet you lose a centimeter of your dick some of us are little girls now
And some of you have huge gaping vaginas now, admit it.

The most distracting billboards are the ones with boobs on them.
Like this one.
But distracting in a good way.
