This is retarded. They can search you on suspicion, and refusing to allow a search is suspicion enough for my local cops.
NO THEY CAN’T! If you don’t give consent, they can’t search based on “suspicion”.
I’m a card carrying member of ACLU. I make sure they see that little card when they ask for ID and all that “suspicion” shit goes away fast.

That’s an awesome link, btw. Excellent reasons you should never talk to them if you’re the subject of an investigation ESPECIALLY if you are innocent.
This is actually pretty good advice for dealing with police if you are stopped for anything, really.
Never, ever, make it easier for them to nail your ass to the wall. The burden of proof is upon them to prove you guilty, not you to prove your innocence.

I actually know the artist who did this. She did it using information from a couple of lawyers she contacted. This is all on the level, I kid you not.
Oh- and cops suck.
I’ve been pulled over umpteen times for many different violations (speeding, improper equipment, “random” stops, drunk-driving checkpoints) in the fifteen years that I’ve been a licensed driver.
Never once has a cop asked to search my car.
I can only speculate as to why this, but if I had to guess, it would be because I am polite, respectful and compliant.
Most pot-smokers that I know inevitably start every interaction with authority by assuming that they’re going to be hassled. Oddly enough, that’s exactly what happens.
The second impression that you make on the cop (too late for the first, you’re already pulled over) will set the tone for the entire encounter. “Why are you hassling me?” or “I didn’t do anything wrong.” is going to prolong the unpleasantness, guaranteed.
