absolutely Stevie Ray Vaughn… I would go with Texas Flood for obvious reasons, but for a more ambiguous reason, it was the first song I heard when my grandma died. Talk about a flood of emotions.

Entering your band in a “blues competition” is automatic FAIL.
You might as well kick Robert Johnson in the taint.
i always like the bands that take some unexpected song. that’s not necessarily blues.
i.e. depeche mode personal jesus.
turn something well known like that and turn it into a good blues song.
Just bring one guitar and a lot of pain.

If you want something that kicks ass and would get you a decent spot in a competition, try some fast SRV numbers, eg. Rude Mood or maybe Texas Flood. Check Kenny Wayne Shepherd out too, I’d say Electric Lullaby would be great for a comp.
Maybe some Joe Bonamassa, if you prefer something more modern?
Also, I’d say throw in an original song or two in there. It’s rather easy to come up with a blues song/instrumental. That is, if you actually feel the music you play. Remember: it’s all about feeling, technique and “originality” isnt as important. That’s what makes blues unique. You can repeat the same riff over and over and make it sound different each time around.
(Take a good look at B.B King if you dont know what i’m talking about. Stylish repetition is the term, I believe)

Early Fleetwood Mac from the Peter Green era, Elmore James, Howlin’ Wolf, Savoy Brown. Don’t try to crowd in a lot of notes. Just put a lot of feeling in the ones you do play and you’ll be fine.

Some of the best blues of my personal taste is VERY early rolling stones and the doors.
I know. Probably not what you were getting at but People Are Strange NEVER fails to go down well.
Look into John Hammond. You look like you know nothing of the blues, whether it be the pain or the history, and if you come here looking for inspiration, you are probably beyond help. John Hammond may be your last hope, as he started off a white outsider too.
