That’s on the list. but it’s only underpowered by today’s standards. In 1981 they only had 23 less hp than the corvette. Though the real reason for the rebuild is because of the fact while the body structure may be rust proof (fiberglass with stainless steel panels) the frame is the weak link on these. It’s epoxy coated sheet steel for the most part. When the epoxy gets chipped, the steel starts rusting underneath. 3209 had the beginnings of frame rot when I got it, which is why I took it down to the frame, so I could fix the issues before they became critical. There are stainless steel frames available now as well, but I don’t have $12k free cash handy to sink on that upgrade.
Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the technology…
I know where there’s one of these sitting in a garage, up on jack stands, with about three miles on the odometer.
If it’s been sitting that long. It would take about $10k to get it roadworthy again.
Replace the 28 year old NCT tires, pretty much every component in the fuel system, and a total brake and clutch system rebuild, and a hand full of safety recalls performed.
These cars do not fare well when left to sit anywhere for any length of time. The most reliable deloreans are actually the ones that are driven at least once a week.. or have had the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection replaced with something else. Either converted to carb or EFI.

what’s the point? top dollar, these cars fetch $50K. and i’m talking ones that have about three miles on them. a restored DMC is worth maybe $30K. and it’s a piece of crap. underpowered french 6 cylinder. and a fibreglass body to boot. that stainless is just a covering. i’ve ridden in one. i wasn’t impressed. but the doors are cool.
If it does still run, and is in pristine condition. Maybe. My guess is if it’s up on jack stands, it hasn’t been started since it was parked there. No non running delorean has ever sold anywhere near 50k. Ever. Actually the only deloreans to get near or over that, has been proto1 and the legend turbo prototype cars. Though if you do car to argue the value of deloreans. Be sure sure to head on over to dmctalk.com where your perfectly welcome to argue with other delorean owners.
Current market prices on deloreans are: immaculate cars that run and have 0 issues go for upper 30-40k. ‘good’ condition cars which might only need some cosmetic repairs go for 20-30k, ‘fair’ condition cars, which mean they run and still are driveable, but need lots of cosmetic, and still some mechanical repairs go for between 10 and 20k. Sub 10k cars are usually considered project cars/restoration projects. This is the classification my D was in when I bought it.

I am putting it back together. And why would restoring cars be a crime? My D was a basket case project car when I bought it. Was one of those ‘unsafe at any speed’ deals. barely ran, wouldn’t idle at all, all four brake calipers seized, shifter cables rusted solid.. The list goes on and on.

But to repeat myself, the car was a basket case. Yeah it may have been shiny, but nothing worked and it was beginning to suffer from frame rust, which is a killer on these cars. It needed a full resto in order to be roadworthy and reliable.
Nice… I’ve been doing a very slow not-frame-off restoration on mine since 2004. I admire your jumping all the way into doing it this way. You ought to check out the photo series DMC Houston published at DMCHelp of how they do the frame-off refurbs… it’s lovely.
Fuel efficient cars that don’t pollute are so over rated. Let’s spend twice as much on a car that is 3 times as old and gets 4 times less gas mileage…cause it’s faster…smart…

FYI a good running manual delorean has less NOx output than an 04 honda accord and gets about 30mph hwy..
Go fast. That’s funny too. Really proves you know nothing about these at all. The stock delorean motor has about 130hp.. Their lack of performance was the main complaint about them when they came out.
This makes me sad! I hope it got put back together ok! and btw, its not sheet metal that makes the body, its 304 SST panels that are formed perfectly to make up the body. In fact, if one is good, there are blueprints on how to remake each body panel out there on the internet…read the wiki on deloreans, its a really good article, there are 2 deloreans out there that are made of complete 24k(?) gold!!!

I never said the body was sheet steel, It’s the FRAME that’s epoxy coated sheet steel. And actually there are 3 gold plated cars. the 2 amex givaway cars, and the last car off the line was given the ‘spare’ gold panels leftover from the amex cars.

That kind of proves my point. I mean I would like it if you were making it an (? type) of oil car or something. But it’s still not going to get over 50 mpg…and seeing as you could pay less to save money on gas, it’s a pretty stupid decision, especially considering the pollution epidemic at hand.

Such eruptions happened regularly, and happened a LOT more regularly in the distant past yet somehow the temp of the planet isnt 200 degrees?
The earth is currently in a cooling trend. and has been for a while. Pony up some hard numbers to prove it’s not, that will counteract the hard numbers that says it is, and then we’ll discuss global warming.
Do we need to curb pollution? Defiantly. But greenhouse gasses are low on the list. The garbage belt in the ocean. Sludging up rivers and lakes, etc, are all issues IMHO that should be getting a lot more attention that failed to be proven global warming.. though I guess that won’t line algore’s pockets like global warming does, so it’s not such a big issue.
