Being especially familiar with the charts of this year in particular, I noticed the differences between the “Top 20 Songs” of the year, and the twenty songs that actually got to #1 at some point during the year.

Those that did the former but not the latter:

• “Treat Her Like a Lady”
• “Mr Big Stuff”
• “Do You Know What I Mean”

Those that were #1 but not in the year-end Top 20:

• “My Sweet Lord” (#31)
• “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” (#22)
• “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves” (#29)
• “Theme from Shaft” (#89)
• “Family Affair” (didn’t make the Top 100 for ’71, #79 the following year)
• “Brand New Key” (didn’t make the Top 100 for ’71, #9 the following year)
