This is from Vogel Gryff my second favorite celebration of the year. In the pictures Wilder Mann, Leu, and Vogel Gryff meeting on Mittlere Brücke in Basel, Switzerland.
its just a rowdy celebration for the people who dwell in kleinbasel to pay homage to the three honorable societies and even though i reside in GrossBasel its still fun to watch, the wild man is my particular favorite because he whacks small children with his pine tree
@...madmax: Sounds like a lot of fun. We don’t have anything like that here in WV. We do have some great blues/bluegrass festivals throughout the summer though and many of them have a very Celtic feel. Celtic songs are still played in Appalachia.
@...madmax:
Rowdy celebrations are excuse enough for me! And, on top of that, there’s a wild man smacking kids with a pine tree? Sweet!

They are mocking the big part of the town on the other side of the river (One side is called big Basle and the other small Basle). They are also going alongside the riverside on a raft and shooting a cannon with bangers. The “Big Baslers” in turn have on their side a head mounted to the side of a building showing the tongue (going mechanically in and out)to the others all year long. The story is long and I’ll gladly share it if anyone is interested. Yes I am a Basler and proud of it! 🙂
Damn, no English Wiki for this. WTF?
Video
That video would be hilarious set to some break downs.
Okay, I give: What are they celebrating?
