That fear is why I’ve never seen the remake by John Carpenter.
The Tripods was just a TV show. And it aired in the afternoon in German TV in the 80s. So my mum didn’t really catch the traumatizing potential. But I still get irritated when I hear the theme song. The whole series is on Youtube now apparently. They sadly never produced the final season.
At the age of 27, The Fourth Kind (2009) made me afraid of the dark for several weeks. I always felt like some Inca god was going to snap my spine.

Arachnophobia. There was a period of time where so-called “kid-friendly horror movies” were a thing. This one made per arachnophobic to this day.
Jaws. I couldn’t even swim in a pool without getting creeped out.
Creature From The Black Lagoon had me kinda freaked out for a while. So did Kronos. That one gave me some nightmares.
“Carnival of Souls” weirded me out to no end, but it was “The Last Man on Earth” with Vincent Price that gave me trauma.
I haven’t seen it, but the whole movie is on youtube for free, so I’m about to watch it sometime soon:
