Space shuttle Endeavour, mounted atop its modified Boeing 747 carrier aircraft, flies over California\’s Mojave Desert on its way back to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

    Wouldn’t it be way cheeper just to land in Florida?

    To land the shuttle in Florida? No. The fuel used in the shuttle is way more expensive (I’m assuming here, actually) and I can imagine they don’t want any problems with the super expensive shuttle in case of landing gear failure. In this case its got a nice big airplane to cushion it if that happens. Does my post make any sense? You decide.

    the3g_ipwn: It is cheaper to land in Florida and they do it whenever that is possible. But Edwards Air Force Base is the primary backup landing site, since the weather is more predictable than Florida. Once the shuttle is landed, it can’t take off like a plane, so it has to be piggy-backed, as shown.
