There are several theories about what Jackie was doing in the car when Kennedy was hit. The first was that she was shielding him. Lenny Bruce famously said that she was simply acting on adrenaline and instinct and trying to climb out and get away from more bullets. The third is horrifying and tragic; that she was trying to retrieve pieces of him so she could put him back together again.

Yes, I thought #3, in the madness of the moment it makes perfect sense.

I tend to stay with this official version rather than the speculative and romantic.
I’d agree that she was panicked and trying to avoid more bullets. It’s a perfectly reasonable response to a traumatic event.
