Ew. If I could completely remove Facebook, MySpace, and all those other “advertise myself” social networking sites from the internet, I would.
Any given student sees hundreds (or at least dozens) of people a day. Why not be social with THEM? If someone was *really* special, you’d email them when necessary. But I’ve never given a shit about what someone’s currently doing, and I know no one cares what my current “status” is either.
Why to incite some vivid responses of course.

I bet facebook is actually a subliminal hypnotization program sponsored by the CIA. Just one more piece of their vast media-mental-control scheme to keep impressionable young minds manipulated and unthinking.
@...yawn: @...BowToMe: I admit I have a myspace page. I set it up and used for a day or two and now I check it only when I get an e-mail that someone said something and I should go check it out.
I have a Myspace page too. I use it to keep in touch with my sister and friends that I rarely see because of life. Never been a fan of the telephone, so Myspace works as a great alternative. Also useful for finding new music and upcoming parties.
@...BowToMe:
Failbook could not be more wrong.
this site is responsible for the worlds youngest self made billionaire.
at 23 Mark Zuckerberg(the guy who dropped out of Harvard to start Facebook) was worth 1.4 billion.
at 24 he is worth over 1.5 billion with some people estimating as much as 5 billion, but those comments don’t seem to have sources.
Its social networking for everyone. people still talk to others in person, but those who are more introverted get a little more social action where they might not otherwise.
@...yawn: Why remove them? If you don’t like them, don’t fucking use them. Simple, huh? As for students, not everyone who uses them is a student. And, you know, there’s the amazing thing of meeting people who you’d never encounter otherwise. *Shrug* I don’t have a profile on any of these sites, but I see nothing wrong with them. Sure, there are a bunch of shallow, pretentious, immature idiots on them, but that’s the fault of the people and not the sites.

This could be applied to so many things in life, its not even funny. Including this website, video games, the workplace, the bookstore, the corner store . . . the list goes on
@...RSIxidor: Of course. The people who are shallow, immature, etc are the problems, not the locations/hobbies/whatever. Well, I’ll make a special exception for /b/. Its nature encourages that sort of behavior. :p
I admit I’m a facebook addict. I was against all social networking sites for years, but when I finally broke down and joined (begrudgingly) I found out that there’s a lot of cool stuff on there. Keeping up with old friends and family is fun sometimes.
P.S. I also have myspace but I hate it. Too many weirdos there. I think the main difference between the 2 is myspace is for making new friends while facebook is for keeping the old. (One is silver and the other’s gold.) 🙂

Great for internet stalkers too.
I have both. They’re absolutely great for keeping in touch with friends and family. I also have Linked In which is great for professional networking.
