    Thats a pretty insane contraption just to put a dual view HUD in a pilots face.

    If I had to guess, I would assume that the HUD is a total scree, not something you can see through. Im guessing the image is projected onto it from a camera located where it is attached, and the housing unit for the arms are large because the need to swing away.

    It’s an Advanced Helmet Mounted Display, and it’s used for killing pixels: “high-resolution, optical see-through display system that overlays computer-generated battlefield scenery on the real-world environment. Designed for flight simulator applications, the AHMD is compact, and fits on top of the pilot’s personal flight helmet. The AHMD also tracks the pilot’s head movement such that the overlaid information is automatically aligned with the user’s instantaneous view of the world. “
