You enjoying that freedom of speech? Thank WAR! Just about every major and even minor technological advancement in history is due to War or military research turned public.

Timmay, you did not just justify the deaths of literally billions of people by appealing to your computer and superglue.
jeattime20
Don’t forget the micorwave oven, hang glider, GPS, smoke detectors……so I’d say I agree with Timmay72. No matter how savage war is it leads to advances in areas that the civilian population gains in.
@toof
I lived in Manhattan, Ks for the last six years, just a jog up the road from Ft. Riley, home of the 1st infantry (the big red one, they call themselves).
I worked closely in a factory with some guys that had been in Iraq. I heard two stories before I got a better job. These are as close to verbatim quotes as I can remember after 2 years.
First, on a raid into a relatively small town, they spotted a man on a roof in the distance. When he saw them he ducked behind the wall, peeking up every couple minutes or so.
The guy I worked with requested firing permission, and then blew the guy’s brain clean out of his head- literally. I know he wasn’t bullshitting because he carried a picture of it lying naked in the dirt around with him.
When i asked what kind of weapon the guy had up there, he said “oh, nothing- he was just hiding”
Then he said: “oh, what you think that’s crazy, When the I.E.D’s started getting bad, command sent us out on missions to terminate anyone and everyone carrying a digging implement. Women, children, anyone with a rake or shovel. Eventually we had to stop because we just kept coming back with such high kill numbers that command was afraid somebody would start making a big deal out of it. After we left they kept trying to get us to go to counseling and therapy for all of it, but hell- i had to fake it, i just thought it was fun.”
the reason wartime industries invent all these cool new things IS BECAUSE THERE IS MONEY IN THE INDUSTRY TO DO SO. Killing people doesn’t magically get the creative juices flowing, money does. If governments didn’t spend so much money in war r&d, and instead invested it in other fields of research, we’d still get technological advances. @elzarcothepale, if thats actually true, thats pretty fucked up..
@... Nimbo:
If your phrase was a sign in California, it would probably be written in Spanish.
Meanwhile, we’re occupying Iraq, and the folks who attacked us seven years ago are from an entirely different country, which is actually one of our ‘allies’.
Don’t forget shock trauma centers and the Internet! It’s amazing all the dumbasses who say the military and wouldn’t have anything to do with it, and yet they do it on service invented by the US military and are over-joyed when their children are saved in a trauma center after an accident.
@youoxymoron: You got it just right. Money drives invention. War moves money like nothing else can.
SO!!! if we took the entire military budget and put it into scientific research where it belongs, we’d be living in a sci-fi movie.
@Timmay: You think for a second that our technological advancement would be stunted if there wasn’t war? Get your head on straight man. How many billions vanish into purely military projects. Take them and apply it to research or technological development and we’re way ahead of the curve. We could cure anything. Scourges like… Overpopulation, or “Horn in the head” would be a thing of the past.
@gor, et al.
You’re skating close to ad hoc ergo propter hoc. Just because some inventions started out military related does not mean that they couldn’t have been invented without the military.
I really get sick of people acting like we need to be grateful to the military for the very air that we breath. Effective society is about cooperating. You have a job. I have a job. The garbageman has a job. All of those are necessary. Society would fall apart faster without any garbagemen and plumbers, than if we didn’t have any military.
Neccessity is the mother of invention. Yes I agree, just because some inventions startd out as military related does not mean that they couldn’t have been invented without the military, but to totally discredit the time and energy put into those inventions by the military is dishonest in the usefulness of the military, especially when it comes to inventions used by civilians. Honesty of the institutions responsible for great inventions was the point, not so much observed gratefullness.
BTW, I respect my public works department on the some level as I do the military, which is quite high.
@reboot….what about military plumbers? And you are right the world does need to cooperate, but when it doesn’t people sure are glad the military is ther to step in and deliver food, water, protection and medical supplies.
@The Matrix: Rebooted, Thats YOUR theory on international/domestic relations. I’m a working member of a society, your a working member, hey lets get a long. Liberalism. That’s cute.
I’m a Realist, namely, because I don’t assume the best in people and that we can all co-operate and live in a happy society.
THE MILTIARY IS AMERICA.
The military, ESPECIALLY in America has played a pivotal role in the development of this country. Who designed the Erie Canal, the Panama Canal, built the bridges, roads, rail roads and thousands upon thousands of other public works projects that provided the foundation that made this country great? I can tell you, members of the Long Grey Line. Really look into the fabric of America, and the U.S. Military has its threads woven in every square mile.
Society wouldnt fall apart without plumbers and garbagemen, there is a U.S. Army MOS that could do their job faster and more efficient. There just wouldnt be jobs for that education level.
@... natedog, you cant call those people that! That is not right. They are now called Sanitation Engineers.

The military employs hundreds of thousands, house many that would otherwise have nowhere to go, give people new chances, and invest tons of money in new research that reaches the civilian populace in a decade or less. Sure if you didn’t have military and spent that money in new inventions you’d be way advanced. Sadly you wouldn’t exist because you never got past making a sword and the USA probably conquered you and ushered you into a new age of non-pussyness.
Oh and they also invented freedom. Because big guns = freedom from someone with slightly smaller guns that may want to use you.
Yikes. Are we to believe that without military funding we’d still be living in caves? You think they’d just let that money sit there if there wasn’t a war to fund? The U.S. is How many billions in the hole? What do you think they could do with all that money back? hmmm? Fricken Rednecks.
The problem is, as long as people are ignorant like this, war is inevitable. Technology is simply a side effect of war. It can’t be used as justification, or you’ve got a twisted sense of reality.
Wow, someone just justified the deaths of several of my family members because of the benefits of microwave ovens.
Hey, guys who objected to me saying that Americans on the whole were generally racist and barely human? I take that all back. Because of the microwave oven.
I mean fuck. Say what you will about those who – over the millennia – have been killed, raped, had their possessions taken, their villages burned, often for something so insignificant as a chess game between Catholicism and Protestants over the number of sacraments there were.
No, no, war is a fact of life: let the dead bury the dead. The living must move on, and enjoy their microwave ovens. Men died so you could have the freedom to heat up your food slightly quicker than on a stove.
You are by far the biggest rascist here. You throw up the “race card” when it suits your argument, and you hide behind it when it dosen’t.
I have also never once seen you admit what country that you are from. You bash America like there is no tomorrow. Are you ashamed, or just a coward?
Caio is Canadian. He has mentioned it before.
And yes, as Canadians, its very easy to Bash the U.S. Because the entire country agrees that you are all stupid. 🙂
I’ve read many a political shitstorm comment thread in my day, and the pro-war people always say that we should thank our soldiers for protecting our freedoms and such. But the war in Iraq has done nothing to help defend our country or it’s freedoms. If anything, it’s pissing off more Muslims, so then more of them will become terrorists. The invasion of Afghanistan was the first time since WWII that we were actually fighting someone who was a threat to us. North Vietnam and North Korea weren’t going to attack the United States, and neither was Iraq, and neither will Iran. Even Bush knows Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. The only person who still thinks there’s a connection is Sarah Palin.
Ironically, upon request, I described my country, place of birth, and background on the forums about an hour or two before ipwg made that post.
But I’ll repeat it for you:
I’m an American citizen of black and white descent. I was born in Brazil but moved to the United States at the age of three. I moved to Canada as a teenager to take advantage of educational opportunities that aren’t available in the US.
I don’t refer to myself as an American on this site, because although I’m a voting citizen, I’ve been informed by a Republican poster that only white Americans are real Americans. According to the one-drop policy which still lives in spirit in your colonialist, barely-human minds, I am “African”.
All I ask is that you don’t take what some ignorant hick says about you and funnel all white Americans into that same lot. You are obviously well educated, and most of the time well informed. I enjoy the back and forth ribbing that goes on here at M[c]S, but calling me a “barely human rapist” is ridiculous. Stop believing everything you read and hear on the news.
Lastly, please don’t spend the next two hours researching a response written by some one else, in some history book, just to bring it back here and pawn it off as your own. It’s starting to bore me.
I want to thank you for repeating where you are from. A country of people too sober to be British, too cowardly to be French, and too irrelevent to fight for what you believe in to be American.
@ipwn: Obviously I’m laying it on thicker than I believe.
Here’s the think. I’ve been on this site since 2006, back when it was a normal-ish image blog without any registration or anything like that. It has always been my peaceful sanctuary.
In the last few months it’s been swamped with hicks and rednecks. They are disturbing my beautiful garden and taking away one of my only forms of relaxation.
So, I’m trying to chase them off with some creative trolling. Yes, I more or less believe what I say, but I exaggerate it so I can piss the republicunts off. So far, it’s working. Biblo was one of the first and I haven’t seen him in like a week.
It may have been an ad hoc argument but it’s prolly an iff that’s the problem. It’s clear that having a huge standing military has us doing what the Romans did, putting them to work when not actually at war. But to say that the military is the only source of technological advancement is false.
Thinking that six million jews and four million poles, gays and gypsies killed in concentration camps is worth it because of the microwave oven is retarded beyond belief and has no logic or reasoning whatsoever. The microwave oven is a minor convenience that you could easily live without.
No, but seriously, let’s have another holocaust: maybe they’ll invent a better vacuum machine.
@Caio, yeah, i used to love to just check out some pics, without seeing all these bullshit comments. Its the reason why i stopped commenting on things. the worst ones are the barack/mccain/palin pics
Actually the radar (which lead to the microwave) was developed during peace-time, as was the internet. One of the most civilian used inventions made during war-time is the basic principle behind the cell phone (actually thought-up by Hedy Lamarr, the actress, for frequency switching used for torpedoes).
With that said, I don’t believe anybody here ever said that only the military makes inventions and that they are only made during war and hence it good to have a war just for its inventiveness, so the over-simplification is really out of line.
Actually, I made a snarky remark basically amounting to “You did NOT just justify the deaths of billions of people by appealing to advances in technology” and toof essentially said, “Yes, yes I did.”
@the3g_ipwn
I guess anyone that has held the moral and intellectual high ground for SO long can be irritating. U.S. is like the school bully, and Canada is the popular kid that’s friends with everyone. I suppose i understand how frustrating that can be. Maybe if you got your nose out of other peoples business, you’d make more friends?
I never knew of any school bullies who would come to anyone’s help when they ask. The US is the one country that will send aid to people who cry for it’s down-fall because their people are hurting.
One of the reasons Canada can afford to be the popular kid is because they have a tiny population and is sanwiched between ice and the US, and this is without any recognizable border between the two. If the US was such a bully, it would have smacked their bad french speaking citizens and make it their 51st state.
Yeah really, when you look at canada, save a few cities, where is the vsat majority of their population? Within what, 50, 100 miles of the U.S. Border? So the country with the 3rd largest landmass has most their population within miles of the country “they make fun of.”
And anyone who says that they left the U.S. as a TEENAGER because Canada has “better schools” makes me laugh. Did the elite Colleges, Academies and Universities in the U.S. turn you down?
I just happen to have highly educated answers to all your inquiries, because I know you all speak from ignorance. Thats why i’m here, to enlighten.

NOT!

So if there’s a war, everyone afterwards is gonna be illiterate?
Or that the English language will disappear off the face of the planet after a war?
