I’m no good at guessing ranks or what have you but at this juncture I’d like to point out that a USMC private first class only makes 20 grand a year base pay.
Yes, but we also get free room and board, as well as free food and no utility bills. It mostly balances out.
What kind of compensation is there in a case like this?

People who join and fight don’t do it for the money. They could make a whole lot more money in a lot of other professions.
