I’m gonna say another thing. Everyone in the English-speaking world nowadays gets upset when they are reminded that they are in a sick violent world. They’re rewriting history and literature (the recent nigerless Huck Finn, for example) just so they don’t have to be personally uncomfortable, as if their own delicate feelings should be society’s highest priority.

I’ve recently dusted off my old copies of the complete Tacitus, and I’m reminded what he said about the decline of the Roman Empire: As the Romans became wealthier and more comfortable, they sacrificed more of their freedoms and became too soft and sensitive to face the realities of life. Their tribal neighbours remained free, democratic in a primitive way, and thick-skinned. It was inevitable, he said, that these now superior-peoples would topple a Roman culture so quickly abandoning all the things that it takes to survive on earth. He was writing when Rome was nearly at its peak but he turned out to be right in the end.

This is exacly what is happening now. English speakers are sitting on the internet whining about how sensitive their delicate their feelings are, and writing big essays about how English is the universal language and technology will keep it that way forever, while more robust cultures aren’t letting themselves fall into the same kind of decadence. We’re going to become another medieval Europe or Qing-dynasty China.
