My first domain that I ever registered was www.comiccovers.com. I can’t remember who I registered it through initially, but I do remember it cost me something like $40 to register and set up. Eventually I found GoDaddy, liked their $10 domain price, and started buying up domains like a bitter beast that could only be satiated by new and exciting urls.
GoDaddy’s prices were great, but the name is unprofessional sounding, their management system is a headache, and it’s hard to suggest them to clients when I know that the guy that owns the company is a complete douche nozzle. That being said though, I have nearly 50 domains with them, due to apathy on my own part, and the knowledge that the transfer process is painful. It doesn’t have to be so damn complicated and stressful, but they really don’t want to make it easy to leave at the drop of a hat, so I’ve stayed with them and let the auto renew process take care of everything.
The final straw though was GoDaddy’s recent back and forth on SOPA. Whether or not you believe that SOPA could mean an end to the internet as we know it, you MUST believe that SOPA is a big deal, one that would definitely shut down sites like MCS with a single complaint to the domain host by a single IP holder, with little or no legal recourse. The idea that SOPA is even being considered is offensive, and the fact that GoDaddy is supporting it is obscene.
Effective immediately, I’m transferring all my domains over to namecheap.com
Good man! I have some ideas for sites myself, and after reading up on GoDaddy’s goings-on I can safely say that they will never be considered as a domain host.
And let’s not even get started on SOPA; holy cow there’s a rabbit hole for ya.
GoTiki! (no pun intended, honest!)
M[c]S against SOPA!
Let us know how things are going with the domain switch.
Wish I could contact my representative but, Wooooh!, I don’t have a representative because I don’t live in the states!
YOU GO GURL
now get rid of the popups and sound ads
You the man! Let’s take a dump on their headquarters door, I have one brewing so let me go first. We will sort out an order once we all get there.
<3 you tiki
Good for you Tiki!
I know it’s a headache, but standing up for what’s right is never easy !
It’s only going to get worse since not enough people understand or are willing to bite the bullet like you have…I hope Santa was good to you !
Good move!
Hopefully, they will lose enough business that they will wake up and stop their support of SOPA.
They did withdraw their support of SOPA…6 days ago.
They removed their public support of it. They still support it because, as written, they are exempt, but not their competitors. If you can’t innovate, legislate!
I made a thread about it, it some how got removed
Waitaminute – Godaddy reversed their support of SOPA shortly after they announced their support…on Dec 22. I don’t understand why you would announce this now. Perhaps it’s just the hip thing to do.
In any case, if you want to make a difference, why not boycott companies who are actively and publicly supporting SOPA?
did it today, because today’s the world wide move out day. also, I just realized how much money I was spending with them.
not boycotting the other companies because I don’t have anything business related to do with them.
Push it hard, just make it so it didn’t look like my idea though.
transferring isn’t tough, godaddy makes it tough, to deter people from leaving.
namecheap is good. IMO, r4l is better, though… 8)
Shit, we’re moving AGAIN!!!!
I just moved my domain away from GoDaddy, cuz screw them and screw SOPA.
Thanks for the tip, Tiki!
Thumbs up, Tiki. I hadn’t wondered where you stood on this, so I’m glad to find out we stand together. 🙂
Good on yer, man.
glad i never unpacked my things!
LET’S SHOUT AND BURN THINGS, YEAH
FUCKING WASHINGTON, AM I RIGHT?
FUCK YEAH, NEXT STOP DUBLIN!!!!!!!!!!
