” In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.”

Why. Seems like a colossal waste of time. Anybody have any insight on this premise?

    it’s a power display.
See what happened last time you fucked with us? we nuked a whole colony and now you have to sacrifice your own kids annually for our entertainment.
In addition, the revenue generated by the decadent, hedonistic fans of the spectacle is massive.

The original book is a good kind of not-quite grownup sci-fi, but the sequels run the concept into the ground.

Tl;dr: Mass Psychological control method, decent read, don’t expect to love this movie.

all three of the books were poorly written drivel that makes the Harry Potter books look like they were written by a fucking genius. the writing was horrid, but the basic premise was good, so hopefully they can pull something out of their asses for the movies.

yeah MOVIES. you know they’ve already contracted to do all three.

Damn, really? I was wondering whether or not I should look into these. Guess I’ll get back to work on my own Young Adult fantasy series.

Actually, the books were pretty good. The recommendation I got was “they’re better than Twilight”. I almost dismissed them because, frankly, that’s about on par with saying “they’re better than a sledge hammer to the balls”. No, the writing is not masterful. But it’s still a good story. Surprisingly brutal and grim for a book series targeted at young adults.

First book was, imho, just fantastic. The last two were, meh. Third one improves, though. Anyway, okay stuff, actually.

I liked The Running Man better.
