This would have worked better if they had sawn the chessboard in half to properly give the illusion of an 8×8 board, as opposed to the 8×16 board that results from putting a normal chess set against a mirror.
This isn’t an illusion. It would not have worked better if the board was sawn in half. The point is he’s playing chess against himself. Instead of flipping the board around after every turn, he just has to look up at the reflected board.
