She was lead ship of her class. She and her sister Musashi were the largest, heaviest, and most powerful battleships ever constructed, displacing 72,800 tonnes at full load. The class carried the largest naval artillery ever fitted to any warship – 460 mm (18.1 in) guns which fired 1.36 tonne shells.
The ship held special significance for the Empire of Japan as a symbol of the nation’s naval power (‘Yamato’ was sometimes used to refer to Japan itself), and its sinking by US aircraft in the final days of the war during the suicide Operation Ten-Go is sometimes considered symbolic of Japan’s defeat itself.
WIKIPEDIA POWER GO!
and you mis-spelled “tons” therefore your entire entry is wrong. thats the way the internet works.
well good ol dukkie might be from England or Austrailia or hell maybe even Northern Ireland…
i think thats how they spell it over there
‘Tons’ and ‘tonnes’ are different, and both different from ‘metric tons’ and ‘metric tonnes.’

Also, GO US NAVY WOOOOOOOOOO A-MURKA! NASCAR AND VAPID BLONDE SLUTS FTW!
And in 2199 the ship is converted to a space battleship, complete with wave-motion gun, in order to travel to planet Iscandar and back to Earth in just under one year!
Yamato Cannon?
Is it bad that as soon as I saw Yamato I thought of DMC4? I play that too much 🙁
DG:
This was before all of that “amurika nascar blondes” crap. You know, back when America was actually respected and feared (and rightly so).
It probably would have lost to an Iowa simply because the Iowa’s radar fire control was so much better.
Mike;
I know. I’m American, and [SURPRIZEZZZ] I’m joining the Navy, AND [maor surprizerz] as a Gunner’s Mate. So I’m gunna be on the deck of a battleship firin’ off the 16-inch gunz at foreigners.
I’ve also been working out hard the past month or so, running and lifting hard so I can attempt to meet and beat US Navy SEALs qualifying times. Then I can volunteer for SEALs, and be a badass kilin machine.
And Vygramul, the Yamato would have torn apart the Iowa-class. In fact, the reason Japan bombed Pearl Harbor was to take out the battleships because they had believed the Naval battles would be won and lost by the firepower of the battleships. Since they took out or crippled the mass of our battleships, it didn’t really make a difference because we were planning on using or Aircraft carriers and submarines to take out their superior firepower.
We knew we could not take their battleships head-on, se we relied on stealth and aerial assaults on them. They mis-judged us, took out the ships we were not going to rely on, and then go slaughtered by undersea and aerial asaults. Yamato herself was taken down by aircraft, her sistership the Musashi was taken down by submarines, and the third Yamato-class [which was halted mid-construction and converted to a 78,000 ton carrier] was also sank by submarine.
Apologies for being a weeaboo.
The kanji on the plank actually reads Nagato, it was before the Yamato class came to be.
Fortyseven has now rendered all of our conversation null and void.
Thread’s over, boys. Go home.
Good movie based around this battleship and it’s crew: Otokotachi no Yamato
Proably one of the best non-hollywood WWII movies I’ve ever seen.
