What’s with the LHCphobia everyone has?
more like large hardon collider, amirite?
Good job repeating a joke that’s been made every single time an LHC photo has shown up anywhere on the web, el.
What the hell is it? I feel stupid all of a sudden.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider
in the age of wiki or google, “what is that” is not a suitable response until you have at least tried to locate an answer.
“Concerns have been raised that performing collisions at previously unexplored energies might unleash new and disastrous phenomena. These include the production of micro black holes, and strangelets. ”
“According to the standard calculations these are harmless because they would quickly decay by Hawking radiation. The concern is that Hawking radiation (which is still debated) is not yet an experimentally-tested phenomenon, and so micro black holes might not decay as rapidly as calculated, and accumulate inside the earth and eventually devour it.”
Run up the credit cards! theres a chance yo wont have to pay them back haha.
The Earth is regularly bombarded with high-energy cosmic rays that should be creating similar collisions in the upper atmosphere, and it’s still here after four and a half billion years.
@... dorix
“whatever! i’ll do what i want!”
Yeah, hopefully this doesn’t cause a catastrophic “resonance cascade”. Just make sure you keep a crowbar handy. :p
At first glance I thought it said “Large Handrun Colander”. Guess that’s what I get for being a woman. Back to the kitchen…
Ahahah.
I did not say “what is that?”. I said “What the hell is it?”. Get your facts straight before you insult someone.
oh.. I’d Google it but I can’t read.
The thing is, the accelerator is in a vacume, so it should radiate quickly. If its not in a vacume and the black hole is large enough to interact with air, then we are all fucked.
The scientist have the quick and easy deaths, its all of us who are going to die. from either tidal forces or lack of atmosphere.
“Guess that’s what I get for being a woman”
So because I read “Hardon Collider” like elzarcothepale, I must be a guy? 😉
Huh, I suppose so 😛
@dorix: More like large hardon collector, am I right?
Anyway, this is about the third time in my life time that a ‘scientists will destroy the world’ news story is hit. Frankly, I trust the Swiss. I once was seeing a Swiss girl, and she has small town values and perfect boobs. Man she gave *me* a Hadron. They also make delicious chocolate. The Swiss wont end the universe.
And if they do, I owe you a coke.
Well, if you look at it in perspective to the first computer invented… we should have pocket sized Hadron Colliders within the next 50 years.
“So because I read “Hardon Collider†like elzarcothepale, I must be a guy?”
No but you are definitely either Asian or fat.
Didn’t that thing cost billions? I hope it works.
It cost much less to invent Oreo Cakesters and I have a feeling my life has been impacted much more by those than that mother up there.
PeniS:
Nice to see Caio joining the ranks of the fun havers and taking this all less seriously despite his giant pulsating brain.
Popular (or American) Science Magazine had an interesting article about it where they listed some random probabilities some as the .0000000000000001% chance that it would cause the universe to collapse upon itself.
This has no chance of creating a “small black hole” or any such nonsensical bullshit.
What it does is smash particles together so they annihilate (Electrons and positrons). As the matter and antimatter makes contact, they annihilate and produce gamma rays. The gamma rays then form into a lot of smaller matter and antimatter particles, which exist for only fractions of seconds before they disintegrate back into gamma rays.
To get to the point: They are looking for the Higgs Boson. the “theory of everything” as a mathematical pattern was discovered decades/centuries ago. More recently (2007) it was discovered how it related to particle physics. It predicts about 20 more types of particles we don’t know about. The Higgs Boson is one that kinda “is” matter. If the Higgs Boson is found, it goes a significant distance towards proving the “Theory of everything.”
I hope they find a way to manufacture micro black holes, think of what that would do for garbage disposal, vehicle emissions, who knows what else, I micro black hoole would be sweet… but only if, you know, you could condense it back into normal matter when you’re done, otherwise there’d be no way to get rid of it!
The black holes will be so infinitesimal that they will evaporate due to hawking radiation before they can absorb any mass and swallow the earth… probably.
“Nice to see Caio joining the ranks of the fun havers and taking this all less seriously despite his giant pulsating brain.”
The only thing gianter and pulsatinger than my brain is my hadro…. nah changed my mind, too obvious.
I totally saw Hardon collector…
My vagina must be a lie 🙁
Did I miss something? Aren’t we suppose to be dead now?
