“The fictional world in which the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin take place is divided into several continents. Most of the story takes place on the continent Westeros, which consists of the Seven Kingdoms and an unmapped area to the north, separated by a massive wall of ice.
Two other continents share the world in which Westeros resides. The vast continent of Essos lies to the east, across the narrow sea. The closest foreign nations to Westeros are the Free Cities, a collection of independent city-states along the western edge of this eastern continent. The lands along the southern coastline of the eastern continent, collectively called the Lands of the Summer Sea, include Slavers Bay and the ruins of Valyria, the former home of Westeros’s Targaryen kings.
To the south of Westeros lies the continent of Sothoryos. Little is known about the continent save that it is inhabited by dark-skinned people and is “jungly, plague-ridden and largely unexplored”.”

So this fantastic land plucked from the imagination of George R. R. Martin is actually england, deformed europe and australia all mushed together?
That about right?
Looks certainly like it! 😛
But now I want to know what “The Shadow ” (south east corner) is!
Close –if by Australia you mean Africa, and by “deformed” Europe you mean Eurasia, and by England you mean a continent about fifty times larger than RL England.
Perhaps, but to hear those people talk throughout history, England was huge, and Scotland was huge, and they we’re the size of most counties in America. 😀
I read on the Internet that Westeros is supposed to about the size of South America, but the book is all kinds of crazy when it comes to geography. I remember there is a some part where someone says its 10,000 leagues from the Wall to Dorne. That would mean that Westeros alone is longer than the entire circumference of Earth. Then there’s another point where someone says that its a 1000 leagues from the shore to Winterfell, which would mean that the North alone is twice the size of North America.
And somehow ravens are faster than email.
Geography is not the strong suite of the series. Dirty sex is the strong suite of the series.
Can’t argue –especially on that last point.
well the north is the size of the other 6 combined, not counting beyond the wall
It depend whitch league G.R.R. mean. As wiki say – “The league originally referred to the distance a person or a horse could walk in an hour.” But you´re right, geography is not most accurate part in SOIF.
