I just went back and read this book again as an adult. I’m somewhat disconcerted by how much modern paranoia is informed by a book where the government acts on such unrealistic motives. Has anyone else read this outside of high school?
Yup, me. I love dystopias. Although I tend to get pretty depressed when I turn on the news after reading them.
But I think our world is closer to other dystopias than that of ‘1984’.
I re-read this every couple of years, and totally agree with you austindav. I found it especially poignant for a couple of years after 9/11 with how the government was using fear to push through certain agendas. Everyday on the news they talked about the new terror level, without giving specific reason as to why the change, or even detailed explanations as to what the different colors really meant. It just seemed to echo my perceptions of that time.
The U.S. is at war with Iraq. The U.S. has always been at war with Iraq. No, wait a second. The U.S. is at peace with Iraq. The U.S. has always been at peace with Iraq.
Saddam Hussein was a peaceful and progressive leader.
‘MERICUUUH!! FUCK YEAH!!
Orwell was from England, retard
War. War never changes.
1000 years ago we where fighting with swords to the death,
1000 years later you star an unnecessary fight with a fat canadian, until one GTFO
of course it does. war is constantly changing and evolving throughout the ages through politics, economy, religion, technology, and philosophy.
Morons. Morons never change.
Neither do retards.
HEY!!!
